Today, Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt passed away after a fatal accident during the 3rd stage of the 2011 Tour of Italy exaclty one year after he won the same stage in that race. He was 26 and would have become father in September. Rest in peace and condolences to the family. You will be remembered by all cycling fans, not only a talented cyclist, but as a nice person as well.

Very sad accident. Cycling is a very dangerous sport, especially in steep downhill roads.

We Belgians had a wonderful spring with all these wins and a fantastic Ph. Gilbert. Now, in retrospect, all this joy seems so futile ...

    RIP
  • Awful, awful thing to happen. I've never followed cycling much but it's always sad when a competitor passes away. He was due to become a father in September too, can't imaging what his family's going through.

Today's stage was neutralised as a tribute. His teammates and his best friend, American cyclist Tyler Farrar, crossed the finish line hand in hand before the rest of the peloton.
