Reading the blurb on the back cover of Carte Blanche I was struck by how Bondian the phrase In Defence of the Realm sounds, possibly it needs a slight Fleming twist, maybe swap the word Defence with Defiance or something along those lines.

i like In Defense Of The Realm...

Defiance makes no sense, if we are keeping it in the same context that the title would suggest....... definition: "a daring or bold resistance to authority or to any opposing force." - it would mean Bond would be opposing the Realm, not defending it.

Like any good title it's suitability would all depend on the story and it is certainly feasible that you could have a Bond adventure involving Bond fighting against the system if it involved a corrupt and villainous member of the higher British establishment such as a Minister of Defence or even a Prime Minister. Likewise if the protagonist was seemingly closely allied to either the British Government or it's monarchy while secretly working against the country (like Hugo Drax in the novel 'Moonraker') you could have Bond continuing his mission despite being officially refused permission to do so.

I am sorry but YAWN. Enough Bond fighting against M, MI6, Government, traitors, corruption... Please, a more straightforward mission for B23.

But "Defense Of The Realm" sound very good.

Just as a point wasn't Dalton's third bond film rumored to be filmed in China and Titled The Property of a lady, now Daniel Craig's third film is rumored to be filming in China.. Hmm

Shatterhand will never be used, because it is a very well known book and TV character in Germany, which is arguably one of the biggest markets for the Bond series.

I'll bet we get both "The Property of A Lady" and "Risico" in the near future.

"007 in New York" *could* work if there is incident involving (natch) 007 in New York that propels the rest of the plot.

"Nobody Lives Forever" is too close to "Nobody Does It Better" for my tastes.

I've always liked "Shatterhand." Bonus points if they can find a way to incorporate more of the plot from that novel.

"Defense of the Realm" is not bad.

Since it's the 50th Anniversary I too think a Fleming title is a must. Risico and The Hildebrand Rarity work fine in my opinion but The Property of a Lady just doesn't click with me. It sounds too much like a romantic comedy.

As for original titles what do you think of,

I also like the idea of some Fleming chapter titles as potential film titles:

(The) Nature Of Evil - CR
    Dead Reckoning - MR
    Killing Ground - DN
    (The) Shadower - TB
    (The) Death Collector - YOLT

I also think "Shatterhand" could be used as well as both a potential villain name and a title....

Sounds better to me than the poor attempts at Flemingesque titles "Never Say Never Again" or "Tomorrow Never Dies."
I would really like that to be the case! I'm going to have to go through my Fleming novels and find some for myself!

    CRY HAVOC

Taken from one of Shakespeare's historical epics (I can't remember which one, but I suspect it might be one of the HENRY or RICHARD episodes). "Cry havoc" was a battle call in the Middle Ages - the full line from the play is "Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war!" - which basically equated to "At my signal, unleash hell!".

    SLOUCHING TOWARDS BETHLEHEM

Lifted from W.B. Yeats' THE SECOND COMING. It's a difficult poem to interpret, but the final line is "And what rough beast, its hour come 'round at last, slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?" and is a warning of sorts, a caution that humanity's time is near - even if it is unprepared. In fact, THE SECOND COMING has plenty of great lines that could serves as titles: "Slouching Towards Bethlehem", "The Widening Gyre", "Pitiless as the Sun", "The Blood-Dimmed Tide", and even "The Best Lack All Conviction".

    A THRONE OF BAYONETS

This was something Boris Yeltsin said after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the failed coup back in 1991. It's pretty self-explanatory; the full quote is "You can build a throne of bayonets, but you cannot sit on it for long". The problem is that it does sound like a title you could expect to find in THE WHEEL OF TIME or A SONG OF FIRE AND ICE or some other fantasy series.

    THE DEVIL'S ENTOURAGE

I really like this one. It's not taken from any particular source; it was just something I came up with. I was playing around with THE DEVIL'S REFUGEE as a title when I realised it was taken from an Oasis song. Then I somehow wound up with the word "entourage", probably because a friend of mine was right into the series of the same name. I wound up working the two together and got THE DEVIL'S ENTOURAGE, which I think is a really strong name; complex enough for a Bond film, but not isolationist the way QUANTUM OF SOLACE was (although EON repeatedly explained it at the press conference where it was unveiled, the press largely chose to ignore them for the sake of more stories about how odd the title was).

    SLOUCHING TOWARDS BETHLEHEM?

The Hildebrand Rarity sounds too much like a Robert Ludlum book title. Of the choices being considered Risico is the best choice. Mysterious yet intriguing. And......

My top Fleming picks are Property of a Lady, Risico, and Shatterhand. I guess you could through in The Hildebrand Rarity and A Whisper of Hate as well. 007 in New York is incredibly unimaginative and I do not understand the popularity behind it.

I also like some of Post-Fleming book titles like Carte Blanche, Devil May Care, and Nobody Lives Forever. I think those would be good backups. I really wish they never used Everything or Nothing for a video game.

Kudos to @saunders for Defense of the Realm. I think that's one of the best fan-thought up titles out there.

there is popularity with that name? Where the hell have I been?

And good lord, '007 in New York' is the flat out worst title I've heard for a James Bond film.

I think that Property of a Lady is a fine title. People complain that it sounds like a bad Lifetime movie, but really: From Russia With Love sounds like it could be some cheesy romance escapade, too. (From Russia With Love is a great title, though!)

Going through Fleming's Casino Royale chapter titles, I stumbled over chapter 18:

    A Craig-like Face

Now THAT's surely a fitting title!
