That AVTAK score is incredible. Always find myself whistling bits of it long after the credits roll.

This one is my favorite. Love it. One of Barry's greatest scores - another reason I'm excited to watch AVTAK again.
  • It's such a good score. One of the series' best. And a lot of great music was left off the album too:

What does that have to do with quality? Each film exists on its own plane. Whatever silliness may exist in LALD enhances the experience for me.
I was just trying to make sense of the categories for your list. Sometimes the details can cloud the picture. I should know from my recent discussion of TWINE with bondjames; there are qualities that diminish one film but enhance another for us.

    My current ranking

    Incredible

    1. Casino Royale
    2. From Russia With Love
    3. The Living Daylights
    4. Quantum of Solace
    5. Goldfinger

    That's a great top 5. I do approve!

I would say that AVTAK is the darkest of the Moore films. The guy shoved in the propeller, Zorin gunning down all the workers. The half jovial repartee with the villain is gone here. Merely a cold 'I am not amused' attitude from Bond. He knows this guy is pure evil and more dangerously he's highly intelligent.

Zorin stands alone as a unique villain in the series, and arguably the greatest in my thinking. Christopher Walken was the best actor in the world to play the part. Of course there have been plenty of unhinged, megalomaniacal villains throughout, but Zorin is really the only one to be completely insane with an explanation/backstory to demonstrate how chemical experiments produced him and his psychotic behaviour.

His behaviour in betraying the KGB, betraying May Day and his army of henchmen, actually showing enjoyment as he kills them all and then his unhinged laughter as he directs his blimp into the Golden Gate bridge - I can't think of anything similar in Bond films.

It is very dark. Almost to the point of crossing a line as he laughs whilst gunning down his own henchmen. Evil, genius and psychopath all in one whereas in other villains we've plenty of evil and genius but not really much evidence of psychopath. Maybe Elliot Carver is the next one in line in the insanity stakes.

I can't argue this point. Zorin is a fantastic villain. AVTAK keeps jumping up and down in my rankings because one moment, I love the film because of Walken and Jones. And the next, I frown upon it because of the visible stuntman shots and Beach Boys music.
  • AVTAK has its lows: creaky fight sequences, geriatric MI6ers, that horrendous fire truck chase. But with Macnee and Moore, Walken and Jones, Duran Duran, actual stuntwork on and around the Golden Gate and the Eiffel Tower, and above all else John Barry at his absolute most sublime...all combined with a hearty helping of nostalgia for the 80s and San Francisco for me...I can't imagine AVTAK ever falling outside my Top 10.

Interesting to see that jump, it went from 21 to #18 for me. I'm going to update my rankings again soon, where I suspect it will drop between those two slots.

One of the rare times Bond butters up the Bond girl with a nice dinner he makes himself, only to not get laid.

Yes the film's one concession to Roger's age, which is then turned on it's head at the end. Definitely should have stuck with father daughter dynamic.

Another big ranking update for me. Following my Craig marathon I had to bump SP and QoS down a bit. My enjoyment of them only slightly lessened, but for now, there are two classic films I have above them:

    1. Casino Royale
    2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    3. Goldfinger
    4. GoldenEye
    5. Skyfall
    6. The Spy Who Loved Me
    7. Dr. No
    8. Licence to Kill
    9. From Russia with Love
    10. Live and Let Die
    11. Thunderball
    12. For Your Eyes Only
    13. The Living Daylights
    14. You Only Live Twice
    15. Spectre
    16. Quantum of Solace
    17. Octopussy
    18. A View to a Kill
    19. Tomorrow Never Dies
    20. The World Is Not Enough
    21. The Man with the Golden Gun
    22. Diamonds Are Forever
    23. Die Another Day
    24. Moonraker

AVTAK will probably always be a favourite of mine. It has many flaws but is also so very entertainingly 80s. Great and menacing charcters, great score and a solid story make for an entertaining experience each time I watch it.
It is also the James Bond film I best remember from my childhood. I also really like Paris and San Francisisco.

It was also good that they did not use any song about "San Francisco" when Bond arrives there unlike the stupid "London Calling" in DAD.

Thank you for that kind welcome, I follow this site
since 2007 at least (with some huge breaks). Also a Bond fan since I was a little kid.

Don't get too mad about OP, honestly I have huge problems with every film between DAF and OP and every single one of them could have finished last.

About Croatia... yes our politicians (mainly mayor of Dubrovnik) and officials at Croatian film industry already confirmed that "Bond 25" will be shot here.
