The Living Daylights easily holds on to first place. I am thoroughly intrigued the whole way through, including the Afghanistan sequence. Villains (apart from Necros) could be better but it doesn't harm the experience. Main complaint would be the very out of place Rosika Miklos and breaking out of Afghanistan prison sequence. But Dalton is so good here (apart from some uncomfortable one-liners) that it might make my top 5 Bond performance list.

    04. The Living Daylights
    05. From Russia With Love
    06. Goldeneye
    07. Dr No

    08. For Your Eyes Only
    09. Tomorrow Never Dies
    10. Moonraker
    11. Goldfinger
    12. Live And Let Die
    13. Diamonds Are Forever
    14. Licence To Kill
    15. The Man With The Golden Gun
    16. Thunderball
    17. The Spy Who Loved Me
    18. Die Another Day
    19. AVTAK
    20. YOLT

    21. QOS
    22. Skyfall

    23. The World Is Not Enough
    24. Spectre

With only three films to go, only CR has the quality filmmaking and direction to beat out TLD. But the real question is, which will I enjoy more?

If I had to choose weaker Bond titles, it would have to be the Brosnan titles. They all seem like they could belong to any generic action movie. That's why I like the Fleming titles as there is a sense of class and British-ness to them.

For you. Some desktop backgrounds I made:

    Aezl1IC.jpg

This lovely desktop by @GertGettler inspired me to propose an alternate ranking for variety’s sake.

Let’s say the 24 EON films + NSNA have been divided into 5 groups of 5 with each group consisting of the five films in each column.

Column/group 1: DN, OHMSS, MR, TLD, DAD
Column/group 2: FRWL, DAF, FYEO, LTK, CR
Column/group 3: GF, LALD, OP, GE, QOS
Column/group 4: TB, TMWTGG, NSNA, TND, SF
Column/group 5: YOLT, TSWLM, AVTAK, TWINE, SP

    Rank the groups!

Oof that's difficult, @GoldenGun. Also, thanks for wallpaper, @GertGettler, great stuff.

    I would go;

    1. GF, LALD, OP, GE, QOS
    2. FRWL, DAF, FYEO, LTK, CR
    3. DN, OHMSS, MR, TLD, DAD
    4. YOLT, TSWLM, AVTAK, TWINE, SP
    5. TB, TMWTGG, NSNA, TND, SF

Surprisingly, neither of my two least favourite films, DAD & SP, do not take the last spot with their respective group.

Funny. Okay, I still miss 8 films out of 24 since I'm currently rewatching, but...

    1. DN - OHMSS - TLD ---> MR - DAD
    2. CR - FRWL - LTK ---> FYEO - DAF
    3. GF - QOS - GE - LALD - OP
    4. NTTD - TB - SF ---> TND - TMWTGG
    5. SP - YOLT - TSWLM - TWINE - AVTAK

Since I refuse to rank NSNA I made a leap of faith... :D

Tough rankings... given that CR and FRWL are my #1 and #2 I had to put that tops. GF, QOS, and GE are strong as are OHMSS, DN, and TLD.... however DAD drags it down to 3rd.

    2 GF_QOS_OP_GE_LALD
    3 OHMSS_DN_DAD_MR_TLD

@GoldenGun , I read it as you want us to rank the set groups against each other, but I see others are ranking within the groups. Could you clarify?

Initially I thought about ranking the groups against each other but everyone is free to rank both the groups as well as within the groups of course.

Thought it would be interesting to see where popular films would end up when they are forced to be taken with less popular entries. Films like DN, OHMSS and TLD have to be combined with DAD. Or FRWL and CR must be together with DAF.

Oops, think I have boobed. Thought we were just ranking each group. Mine needs correcting then.
Group 2 LTK, CR, FRWL, FYEO, DAF
Group 3 OHMSS, TLD, MR, DN, DAD
Group 1 GF, QOS, OP, LALD, GE
Group 5 TB, TMWTGG, SF, NSNA, TND
Group 4 SP, AVTAK, YOLT, TSWLM, TWINE

    TMWTGG, TB, SF, TND, NSNA

Just the groups as laid out in the post by @GoldenGun (not ranking within the groups):

    1. Column/group 1: DN, OHMSS, MR, TLD, DAD
    2. Column/group 2: FRWL, DAF, FYEO, LTK, CR
    3. Column/group 3: GF, LALD, OP, GE, QOS
    4. Column/group 5: YOLT, TSWLM, AVTAK, TWINE, SP
    5. Column/group 4: TB, TMWTGG, NSNA, TND, SF

That was the toughest ranking I have attempted, and even now, as I am about to hit Post Comment, I am not entirely sure of it. Very devious, @GoldenGun.

Really tricky this one I know.

    I’d rank them as follows:

    1. DN, OHMSS, MR, TLD, DAD
With my two favourite Bond films, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and The Living Daylights, and two other favourites, Dr. No and Moonraker, in this group there was never a single moment of doubt which group would take top spot. Die Another Day is the obvious weak link, but it was the first Bond I saw in the cinema and recent viewings weren’t that bad. Overall, a nice collection of films.

    2. TB, TMWTGG, NSNA, TND, SF
From here on it’s deviously tricky. Thunderball and The Man with the Golden Gun are absolute favourites. Tomorrow Never Dies and Skyfall are ok and I guess I will have to live with Never Say Never Again, which has its moments but is overall rather weak.

    3. FRWL, DAF, FYEO, LTK, CR
From Russia with Love and Licence to Kill are favourites and Casino Royale is a solid entry too. Diamonds Are Forever and For Your Eyes Only are near the bottom for me and even though there both watchable, two lesser entries drag this group down.

    4. GF, LALD, OP, GE, QOS
Octopussy is my favourite entry here. Goldfinger and Live and Let Die don’t rate as high for me as for most fans but they are full of memorable characters nevertheless. GoldenEye and Quantum of Solace are amongst the best modern entries. A solid group actually but I lack an absolute favourite, a top 5 or 6 entry.

    5. YOLT, TSWLM, AVTAK, TWINE, SP
Against all odds, The World Is Not Enough is my preferred film in this group. You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me and A View to a Kill are pretty solid overall, but Spectre, my least liked Bond film, takes the group down considerably.

Wow, tricky stuff. I’ve got a clear winner, but the other groups are pretty interchangeable really.

Very simple, I hated SP. felt the story was very poorly written, characters under developed and action scenes lacked any tension or grip to me. It’s also mostly a joke and a matter of opinion. Sorry that that is unintelligible you good sir.

Dont agree on your stance on SP, skropper13, but each to their own.
Your list is excellent, top 3 are perfect!

My problem with Spectre is, and I’m not out to offend anyone but merely expressing my personal opinion on the matter, that plotwise it is as stupid as Diamonds Are Forever or Die Another Day but while the latter two are aware of their stupidity and, for better or worse, embrace that, SP has the pretention to be an indisputable masterpiece.

Well, that’s how I felt about it until recently anyway. I’ve decided to give every entry a fresh re-evaluation for my first Blu-ray Bondathon. Who knows, maybe I’ll like it this time.
