Yo, Daniel Craig in SPECTRE is the closest anyone has come to matching the godly powers of Connery at his best! @-)
SPECTRE made me realize Dan finally reached a Sean-level Bond performance.

Just did a double feature of LALD and TMWTGG.

A lot of positives in these 2 films: Moore is cool as ice, killer soundtrack and main theme song for LALD, Sherif Peppah (yes, yes), Christopher Lee, Solitaire, the quirky, strange and unique style of both films.

    SPECTRE

There are some good scenes in the latest entry, very good in fact, but ultimately, SPECTRE leaves me a little flat. This is how I have felt everytime I've watched it. I'm not going to go into detail about SPECTRE's problems, as I've already covered them back in October (they still stand true) and I think people have well established by now them elsewhere on the forum. But what I will say is that it is a certain two plot elements and the third act that sinks it.

    That fight is excellent, though.

    Quantum Of Solace

While it is only almost Top 10 material the movie is highly entertaining.

After a catastrophically done PTS with the best car chase in the franchise being slaughtered to unrecognisability the movie becomes very exciting and stays that way to the very end.

With a different director this could have been Craig's best.
It's still a mile better than the dreary Skyfall.

QOS has one of the best endings ever, the sequence in Russia.
    CR-QOS-SP Craig's triumvirate of greatness.

Dr. No - Just as Bond thought that Crab Key was a naked little island, it stands to reason that Dr. No is a naked little Bond film. This is as stripped down as it gets. Well, except when Honey's in the decontamination shower. Close, but no cigar.

Anyway... I've always had a curious relationship with DN. If I'm in the right mood, the experience can be sublime. Other times, it's hit or miss. Overall, I enjoyed tonight's viewing, even if it was slightly less than magical.

Previously, I had watched CR 54. It goes without saying how much better Connery is than Nelson. EON definitely picked the right guy to helm their franchise. It made me a little sad to see Ken Adam's wonderful sets this time around. Rest in peace, good sir.

Favorite character besides Bond - Tough choice but I'm going with Quarrel. I sometimes forget how much I enjoy this particular performance.

Weakest aspect - Tonight, it was the score. Parts of it, anyway. It really took me out of the film. Damn near ruined a few moments. Most of it wasn't that bad, however.

Personal highlight - I'd have to say dinner with the Doctor. Everything builds up to this moment and it totally delivers. Great stuff.

Yes, Dr No is my favourite Bond film. Funnily enough I have never then the novel because it is supposedly a lot different. I like early Fleming like CR, LALD, DAF, MR. I was not a fan of GF or TB and am currently reading OHMSS at the moment. Perhaps I will get round to Dr No eventually...

The novel Dr No is different, but not a lot.

The main differences in the novel are the obsticle course, Dr No's death and Dr No's pincers instead of metal hands.

Oh and Honey being naked instead of in a bikini ;)

Also that Bond has not met Quarrel, Strangways or Leiter before.

Yep. And that at the start he's still recuperating after miraculously surviving events at the end of the previous book (From Russis with Love).

DN does start out with possibly Fleming's laziest bit of writing (simply proclaiming that "she - Rosa Klebb -died").

    SPECTRE
    2016, March:
    DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
    THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
    A VIEW TO A KILL
    YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
    THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
    QUANTUM OF SOLACE
    TOMORROW NEVER DIES

Brosnan's second is wonderful. Not only does he shine in his role, but the whole ensemble cast is brilliant. Elliot Carver and Stamper are so beautifully OTT and Wai Lin kicks ass literally :))

Highly entertaining from start (bloody perfect PTS) to finish (great end-game in the stealth ship).
TND has it all, romantic and exotic locations, cold locations as a perfect contrast and many great action sequences.

Spectre again... Just bought a new bluray player, I thought my last player was good. The crystal clarity of this film is breathtaking. This is not the best bond film though its the best technically.

Seems like I started a trend

Anyways we are on to 1964's thunderball a strong film that I actually kind of like is it as good as From Russia with Love well no absolutely not but it is a good film and in viewing it I would put it second. The action is strong and I like largo he is a bit one dimensional but he honestly isn't that bad. Vargas is weak as are practically all the henchmen except for Fiona Volpe. The token sexy doctor is cute... Leiter is kind of cool in this one I would almost say best Leiter of the series so far again the film is much better then I thought

    Ranking
    1. From Russia with love
    2. Thunderball
    3. Dr. No
    4. Goldfinger
    5. Casino Royale 54

    Side note:
Part of me thinks I should bit the proverbial bond bullet and watch Casino Royale 67 because while my bondathon is extremely spread out, at present I believe I won't hit Spectre till febuary 2017 especially if include Royale 67, a weekend for James brolin, diamonds aren't forever and a play through of James Bond the duel to represent the lost third dalton film ( though I won't be doing a review for that here)

But honestly I think I should go for it largely because by the time I "catch up" we will probably know a ton more regarding Bond 25 and that is kind of why I started this process so I wouldn't feel bond fatigue....

I don't know but I have two weeks to decide

From Russia With Love - A perfect sequel, FRWL improves upon just about every aspect of its predecessor. Not that DN was lacking, mind you. Although, if I had to pick one major upgrade, it would be the Barry score. His contribution was essential for creating an atmosphere of mystery and suspense.

This probably has the best cast in the entire series. Everyone brought their A game. I feel that it's Connery's greatest performance in the role. I love the friendship between Bond and Kerim. You really feel Bond's anger when he dies. Which leads us to that great ensemble of villains. SPECTRE (and especially Spectre) are never more terrifying than they are here.

My minor nitpicks include the usual suspects. The tacked on Helicopter and Boat chases. They are not deal breakers but they are disappointing after the showdown with Grant. Also, I would have liked the ending to stay true to the novel. I understand why the filmmakers decided against it but it always feels like a lost opportunity to me. Imagine an ending with Bond getting stabbed and blacking out!

I enjoyed it even more than usual today. It's going to be hard to top this one.

Just gave Moonraker another chance. It's not last on my list anymore - I think I'd rank it above Die Another Day now. It's more fun, and the difference is that MR is a conscious parody - it knows it's entered into that level of parody and it keeps on going in a carefree and strangely self-sustaining way. With DAD, we enter that level of parody (or even worse), except it doesn't realize that it's literally making fun of itself and the Bond franchise. It's trying to be a traditional Bond, but somehow it lacks the self-awareness to realize that scenes like the parasailing and the invisible car and Halle Berry's god-awful lines and the gene therapy etc. were all too cartoonish for the movie it was trying to be. That's the difference - other than the fact that the acting in MR is plain better (Lois Chiles may be flat, but she's not downright terrible like Halle Berry, and Michael Lonsdale blows Toby Stephens out of the water).

@Risico007, since you've already included CR 54, you might as well throw in CR 67 for good measure.

@Thunderfinger, you're right. I never made that connection before but they are both let down by those particular sequences.

With Quantum sometimes i forget it ended in Russia where confronts Vesper's ex boyfriend and not saying goodbye to Camile. I don't why I think of that scene as it was the ending.
It could be because its when his mission ends and we suppose Green will die and now Camile and Bond are safe and everything is ok for both but latter comes his confrontation with Vespers ex and his last talk with M

Goldfinger - I had fun with it. Sometimes it gets too silly but the good definitely outweighs the bad. In addition to being so damn cool, Connery also had a natural gift for humor. Seriously, his facial expressions and the way he could deliver the quips... it became part of Bond's identity, for better or worse.

A positive viewing experience of GF always hinges on how much I enjoy the non-iconic moments. Everything worked fairly well for me this time around. I only had two major gripes, which are always the same.

The first would be Goldfinger gassing the mobsters after he's just shared his master plan with them. Hey Bond, did you have enough time to write that down? Ok, great. Well, we don't need these schmucks anymore! Also, I highly doubt the powers that be would just let Goldfinger waltz that bomb right into Fort Knox like that.

I'm always taken aback by how much of a massive presence Gert Frobe is as Goldfinger. He's extremely menacing considering that his voice was dubbed. There were a few times where his mouth was out of sync with the voice. Still, obviously one of the greatest main villain and henchman combinations. With the clarity of the blu-ray, I noticed that it's not actually Harold Sakata at the junkyard.

Surprisingly, this just edged out DN in my rankings. That hasn't happened in a few years. We'll see how it all shakes out. Oh, and one last thing. I'm sure the vault at Fort Knox doesn't really look like that but it should! What a amazing set.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's Micheal G. Wilson doubling for Sakata.

Watched the Blu Ray of Octopussy last night. Lots of great parts, fantastic Barry score, nice production design & photography. Action was excellent as well. Felt a bit disjointed to me on this viewing though... I think I should have just watched the DVD- Moore looked older than ever in Hi-Def. :-??
