Continuing on with my Fleming inspired Bondathon -

The Man With The Golden Gun

GG looks beautiful on Blu-Ray. Stunning. The middle third is basically an unfunny slapstick comedy. I would have been quite happy to see Pepper make a cameo, on the tourist boat as Bond tears by - “Just try that in my bayou boy!” But no.

Still the dynamics between Lee and Moore really are superb.

Worse Bit – The inclusion, or should that be intrusion, of Pepper in the car chase.

Best Bit – The dinner scene – one of the absolute best scenes in all of Bondom.

    The World Is Not Enough

Ah, Sophie Marceau. Bond thinks he has found found Tracy, but he has actually found Blofeld. From damaged angel with a wing down, to spoilt rich girl with daddy’s issues, Marceau has great fun in the role, hamming in up something rotten during the torture of Bond, and is the highlight to the film. Brosnan looks splendid too.

Worse Bit – Brosnan's "ticks", or as I like to call them, "acting foibles".

Best Bit – “I never miss”

Why is the dinner scene in TMWTGG one of the best of the series? Just interested.

@doubleoego Tim Dalton and Chadwick Boseman must be related. ;)

Well, they're definitely drinking from the same water fountain at least :))

I loved your description of Elektra King, that sentence made me laugh and summed up her character perfectly.
"Bond thought he found Tracy but he actually found Blofeld"

You could be a professional critic just for this.

Though i disagree on Pierce Brosnan Ticks, for me he was perfect his best performance in my opinion.

    OHMSS

I've been meaning to get to this one for a while. As with every Bond film I've watched so far this year, this was an excellent showing this time. I really enjoyed it.

Like last time, I was really impressed with the cinematography here. Along with TSWLM & TB this is probably the most beautiful Bond film I've seen. The shot framing is grand, and gives perspective to the locations. Everything is bright and colourful too, in contrast to the latest EON release, which pales in comparison. The action scenes are edited in a modern way, with fast cuts. I especially love that stock car chase in Lauterbrunnen.

The score is incredible as well, as we all know. Barry at his finest. During the ski sequences here, I realized how much he was missed in FYEO in particular.

Fights - They are notably excellent in this film. The opening pretitles sequence at the beach remains firmly in my top 5, and there are many more too.

Diana Rigg is the acting highlight for me. Really a standout performance from her imho. Laz is ok. He definitely looks the part and has the Bond swagger - it's a very confident performance, but his acting limitations are apparent to me. Nevertheless, he holds his own in this film and smartly underplays the role, which is key with Bond imho. Telly is ok too. Having said that, I've never been all that fond of his Blofeld unlike others. Sure he has more to do than other actors, but Savalas always seems too American to me for the role, particularly his accent.

Anyway, I had such a good time with this one that I'm almost compelled to move it up from its current #9 slot past SF, GE & OP to #6 in my rankings, but I won't do that until I see those films again first to see if it's warranted. Regardless, this is classy Bond film making at its finest.

I love OHMSS so much. It used to be a lower tier Bond film for me back in my earliest days of watching Bond, and it has gone all the way up to #2 on my list, as well as becoming one of my favorite movies ever.

I got the distinct impression when watching OHMSS that EON went all out with this film, not only to create a faithful adaptation of the novel, but also to create a superior visual experience. The actions, score, stunts, location & camera work all suggest a high attention to detail & quality.

They must have been devastated when it wasn't so well received commercially, particularly in the US market.

DAF, which I recently watched and also enjoyed, seems almost like a tv film compared to the majestic grandeur of OHMSS. I read in the link below recently that DAF was an attempt to 'soft reboot' the series for an American audience for the 70's. EON went so far as to cast John Gavin, before dismissing him when Connery committed to returning.

    Thanks chaps

@Mendes4Lyfe - for Mary's "magnificent abdomen" of course

@Szonana - that was actually Barbara Broccoli's description of Elektra. I really enjoy TWINE in fact, apart from Michael Apted's rather staid direction. :)

@Birdleson - with this place, and my Bond reference books - just bought Charles Helfenstein's The Making of OHMSS - plus soundtracks, posters etc, I never seem to leave Bond behind. I've seen the Bonds so many time in fact, that I can replay them in my minds eye. Nevertheless, I want to have a second Bondathon in October, based on the results of the "Rate the Various Categories Film Thingy" thread.

Believe me, it's worse than you think. The creator of the "gal reporter" was a woman, Dale Messick, and thereafter, all the authors who worked on the strip have been female. So seeing a male artist doing the strip in the movie... Well, let's say that somebody didn't do his bloody research !

Though I never cared for her interpretation of the character, the more that I watch Brosnan's Bonds (currently TOMORROW NEVER DIES), I realize that I absolutely hate Samantha Bond's Moneypenny. To be fair, about 35% is her performance, the bulk of the problem is the manner in which the character is written.

I didn't like her either. Easily the weakest one I'd say.

I agree about Samantha Bond. She always annoyed me, and to me her characterization was emblematic of a trend during the Brosnan era which began with GE, and which progressively attempted to emasculate Bond through put downs, symbolic physical slaps, and sappy bed talk confessions.

Only in DAD ironically did I see a reversal with Bond's MP, where she finally showed that she had the hots for Bond during the embarrassing VR sequence. Moreover, all the aforementioned issues were nowhere to be seen, thankfully.

I liked what little we saw of Bliss. Lois Maxwell was the perfect Moneypenny for the first four films (though, arguably, her greatest moment was still four years into the future).
OHMSS. Yes, that was her finest moment. But her next movie "diamond... in a ring.." moment was pretty cool.

That would have been mine pre-SP.
What about Barbara Bouchet and Pamela Salem?

Bouchet and Salem were forgettable for me... What made you dislike Harris in SP?

TND does have its moments. I enjoyed reading your recent insight into it, @Birdleson. It's never been one of my favorite Bond films, and I don't think it will become one of them, but there are a few moments I really like a lot. On the whole, it's still a fun movie.

I know the Dr. Kaufman scene form TOMORROW NEVER DIES gets a lot of praise around here, and deservedly so, but not much is mentioned of Brosnan's outstanding performance in said scene. Even before the execution, he is intense. Silently so for much of the scene.

Of course what immediately follows is my least favorite scene in the film.

I still don't get why Teri Hatcher takes such crap for her portrayal of Paris Carver. Aside form that idiotic exchange with Wai Lin, I think she's very good.

Teri Hatcher isn t among the problems with TND.

I personally didn't like Hatcher in TND at all. I think the film would have improved tremendously if she wasn't in it. Bellucci, who was rumoured, or someone like her would have been more credible for me. I just couldn't buy that Bond would ever have 'feelings' for someone like Paris as portrayed by Hatcher.

The whole premise fell awfully flat for me and impacted my enjoyment of the film, which does have its moments otherwise (primarily on the action front).

The scene where she says "did I get too close for comfort?" Is incredibly soap opera like for me. I suppose they had to establish an intense relationship in a matter of minutes, so that's not easy.

Teri Hatcher was just the wrong choice for the Paris Carver role. Sure she doesn't deserve such a discrediting she gets, and compared to all the Bond Girls from the 70s (who are portrayed as incompetent and clueless entities, sorry to say), Teri does deliver a good performance. But, her characteristics didn't have a dynamic with Bond, if you catch my drift. Not the actress, anyway. I'd very much rather if it were Monica Bellucci to begin with.

There is something awfully 'tv soap' about Hatcher's performance - I agree. Almost Dallas/Dynasty'esque.
