I don't really get why NickNack is hated here so very much. I really like the idea of a different kind of henchman and Nicknack really fits in TMWTGG. I think he is an iconic and very memorable character. I also like that he has a somewhat strange relationship towards Scaramanga. He is not the Oddjob type of loyal henchman. Unfortunately most people here only judge a henchman by his physical stength.

I was just about to say that but you beat me to it haha !
I also don't see the rough deal that Nick-Nack gets,i think he is the perfect foil for Scaramanga and there is good chemistry between the two.

The two annoying, weak characters in TMWTGG for me are Pepper and Goodnight...

The Man With The Golden Gun - Positively shocking. I think this viewing is the best experience I've ever had with the film. Not sure what's going on, maybe Hamilton's passing earlier this year, but I'm seeing his Bond movies in a whole new light. Yes, it still has issues, but I am finding more and more things to appreciate.

Roger Moore never looked better as Bond than he does here. I am also starting to recognize this as one of his better performances in the role. He's still very confident and charming (when he wants/has to be) but there's also a mean streak and some vulnerability portrayed. It was a nice touch to see him with a bloody lip after the dressing room fight.

The Barry score is also growing on me. Not that I ever disliked it. The Asian settings were enjoyable this time around as well. Hell, I even got a kick out of the fun house, which I've always found to be quite tacky. One can definitely feel the enthusiasm that Nick Nack exudes. It goes without saying how great Christopher Lee is as Scaramanga.

This one will definitely be moving up a few spots in the old rankings. There's still some really frustrating parts that will keep it from going too high though. Still, as annoying as Sheriff Pepper was, I will admit that I did chuckle a time or two at some of his lines.
I'm glad to hear this. Subjectively, it's one of my favourite Bond films and easily my favourite Roger Moore performance. A very charismatic and quirky Bond film, as all Hamilton's later efforts were.

It really is a fascinating partnership. Nick Nack is a loyal servant and yet he's trying to get Scaramanga killed so that he can gain his fortune. And all the while Scaramanga is encouraging him to keep at it because he loves the challenge!

This time around through the Hamilton films, I've learned to just focus on the aspects that I really enjoy. Of which there are plenty. Sure, there's still some dumb crap in there, but they are more like minor annoyances now.

    Die Another Day (2002)

This is the most fun I've had with this film. Brosnan is the epitome of suave, particularly during the Cuba scenes.

"What the hell do you want? I don't need a goddammed wheelchair!"

"No? *knocks him out cold* You do now."

Nothing like some Brosnan badassery, and the film is a constant thrill ride for me up until they get on the Antonov. It's a disaster from then on.

Pike is perfect casting as Frost. An elegant femme fatale, and a psycho bitch from the moment she points her Walther at Bond in the hothouse. Toby Stephens works for me as Graves. The man has got the acting chops but it's clear that Tamahori, another psycho, tells him to play the role as over the top as he possibly could, which makes poor Toby laughable during the third act. As for Jinx, I want to like her (and I've allowed myself to to an extent), but the woman has, maybe, a total of two memorable lines. Coming hot off her Oscar win, I really do feel sorry for Halle, who has clearly showed the world that she could act in Monster's Ball. Just another wasted opportunity I'm afraid.

Some brilliant scenes, notably the well choreographed and inventive hovercraft chase, prison, Hong Kong, the exchange between Bond and Raoul, the action at the Cuban clinic, the Sword fight, Frost, Graves, Zao, and Bond in the hothouse, the ice palace bit, and the Aston-Jag ice chase (minus the dumb speed ramping).

Arnold's score is, at times, euphoric, and creates some very memorable queues (as he always does).

Many will disagree with me here, but I find DAD to be Brosnan's best performance by far. As mentioned before, there are some greats moments where he is actually given opportunities to act. The expression on his face after M calls him useless is one of thoes great subtleties in his final go as Bond. Pierce was almost enough to save this film. It's a great shame that the film abandons any smart idea within 15 minutes of introducing one.

The nutcase, otherwise known as Lee, who I'm in no way defending, does know what he is doing in terms of pacing, because that's another thing the film is great at.

Regardless, call me any name you want, but this film is always a joy to watch. The third act is where I become severely distraught.

@jake24, the third act is the weakest segment in the film for me, but I, too, have an absolute blast every time I pop that in.

Good review @Jake24 and I agree with all of it tbh.

I also like Brosnan's acting in the hotel in HKG,showing vulnerability as he is closing his hotel door and when he gets the 'gift' from Mr Chang at reception,on behalf of the Chinese.

There are some very nice touches in this film, apart from the CGI moment and,as you say,the last 15 minutes.

The Peaceful Fountains Of Desire scene is another great one I forgot to include.

"I'm not that kind of masseuse."

"I'm not that kind of customer." *throws the glass*

    You gotta love the man.

That scene is one of his greatest moments, takes control of the situation and seducing the girl at the same. Reminded me to Goldfinger in the pre tittles sequencewhen he is kissing tge girl and sees the villain coming to attack.

On an overcast Friday with a ton of laundry to do and my wife at work I figure I would watch Skyfall a film nearly 4 years after it's release I still don't know how to feel about it...

I love Craig in the film but I feel something is definitely missing ....

    But lets discuss the positives

Craig gives another Solid Performance Bardem is intriguing and campy but not too bad Severine is beautiful and the film as a whole is quite good just not great...

the call backs are annoying Bond is at times uncharacteristic (the being scared of a komodo Dragon is odd)

I don't know whether to praise it for it's originality or complain about it's flaws it's a film that after nearly 4 years I still don't quite know how to feel about it and I don't think it will change anytime soon.

    1. Quantum of Solace
    2. From Russia with love
    3. On her Majesties Secret Service
    4. Live and let die
    5. Skyfall
    6. Goldeneye
    7. Spectre
    8. Dr. No
    9. Thunderball
    10. The Spy Who Loved Me
    11. Goldfinger
    12. You only live twice
    13. The man with the golden gun
    14. Diamonds are forever
    15. Moonraker
    16. Casino Royale 1954
    17. Casino Royale 1967

    Skyfall
In the mood for a Craig yesterday, and this one seemed to hit the spot. Having watched Spectre, recently it was interesting to see them both close together.

Yeah- I like them both, yet their approaches are so different. I was thinking it would be like watching TSWLM and MR back to back (which I've done). However, even thought they follow a story arc, the films feel different. SP feels like it's trying too hard to be fun, whereas, SF had that fun element more naturally.

Hmm....more diverse than TSWLM and MR which are almost the same ?..

MR is TSWLM to the 10th power of zaniness.
SP, compared to SF follows the classic Bondian narrative structure- GB, PTS, Titles, M scene, MP scene, Q scene- mission- first Bond girl fling, chase, etc

Exactly. There's a Bond film for every mood.

  • Dr No starting a new Bondathon, been some time since the last. DN is just a classic atmospheric film, from beginning to end I am engrossed in this film one of the best in the series.

Watching DIE ANOTHER DAY. Mr. Kill is definitely in the running for Worst Henchman in the series. Zao may be in my Top Five.
I've shared what I think are the positives of DAD on the previous page, but Kill is definitely not one of them. It feels like the only reason he's there is to shoehorn that terrible punchline when we first see him.
