The padding was necessary. The book was 53 years old on the film release and today's society needs action.

Just put Skyfall (2012) on, with my horror marathon finished! Now free to watch whatever again, so I figured Bond was the best place to start :)

The underwater scenes, amazingly done, do drag a little too much. I watched Thunderball last week and like always, kept watching my clock, hoping the scene would end.

I agree with what you said about the first Act of Thunderball. I think that the whole health spa scene is badly written and/or badly directed. Too many things are going on there without any deeper meaning for the film, too many implausibilities and random incidents. I just don't get that SP and Bond are in the same health spa, the SP agents all do not seem to care for their cover, the location near a military base, the plane having nukes on board on an excercise flight, Bond's needless challenge with Lippe, Lippe's completely arbitrary death, the explanaton why Bond knows that SP is hiding the nukes in the Bahamas ( a foto that shows Dervall with his sister, what does that explain?). I also think that there is a missed opportunity by not using the othe 00 agents at all. What were they doing all the time?

After we finally get to Nassau, the film is great.

Wasn't all that health spa stuff in the original novel though?

    Tomorrow never dies

As a kid I always thought this film was far fetched and silly as an adult I find this film to be entertaining and extremely down to earth. In fact it may be Brosnan's most realistic bond film. In fact in terms of cons Wai Lin is kind of flat Teri Hatcher is odd in fact the only Bond girl I love in this film is the professor in Oxford but other than that and a lack of Dr Kaufner and Mr Hooper make the film top ten but not top 5.

    1. Quantum of Solace
    2. Licence to Kill
    3. From Russia with love
    4. For Your Eyes Only
    5. On her Majesties Secret Service
    6. Tomorrow Never Dies
    7. Octopussy
    8. Live and let die
    9. Skyfall
    10. Goldeneye
    11. Spectre
    12. Dr. No
    13. Thunderball
    14. The Spy Who Loved Me
    15. Goldfinger
    16. Die Another Day
    17. You only live twice
    18. The man with the golden gun
    19. Diamonds are forever
    20. Moonraker
    21. James Brolin's Octopussy
    22. Casino Royale 1954
    23. Casino Royale 1967

After a good night sleep I realized Tomorrow Never Dies honestly does belong above Octopussy it's really a great film

Watching Spectre (2015) now - fourth viewing. I'm hopeful it will hold up as my 10th place; I absolutely love the PTS. Immediately became a Top 5 one in my list.

Speaking of which, do we have a thread for ranking the Bond movie pre-title sequences?

Good viewing of Spectre for me; maybe my best yet. Pretty enjoyable Bond flick in my book.

    SPECTRE
    Watched on Bank Holiday Monday!
Still love it, it really only goes wrong for me when Bond and Madeleine return to England!
But there is that superb money shot on the bridge with the downed helicopter!
Pts, titles (And song!!) the whole section in Rome (Aah, Monica!) Mr White, the interview with Madeleine, the plane chase (I love this, think its well constructed!) L'American, the stunning train fight, the Rolls in the desert, Blofeld in the Meteor room (Mendes, along with the Spectre meeting in Rome, really handles silence well!) tormenting Madeleine with Mr Whites death footage, torture scene! No, SP still really entertains me! Great Bond movie!

    THE SPY WHO LOVED ME

The PTS is great, first you see a sub in trouble, then it's typical Moore, "let me enlarge your vocabulary" "something came up".

The skiing scene of course is marvelous. Not only is it Moore's first time in the snow, but also only the second time you see Bond on ski.

The stunt must be the greatest ever in the series. I know there are many to choose from, but I think this is the best for its cinematic impression and the Bond theme kicking in once the flag is visible as the parachute.

Nobody does it better. There couldn't have been a better title for the Bond theme. And what about those gorgeous main titles from Maurice Binder.

Doesn't look Moore just stunning in the Commander's uniform! At this point I always wonder why the hell they abandoned this background for the Craig Bond era. One of many scandals concerning the current era.

    Enter XXX :P
    I wish...

Yes I might be thinking with my dick but oh boy....I feel a slight stiffness coming on...

Moore just had the best women. Barbara Bach is no exception. Do I care about her acting talent?? Should I?? Hell no... "I am man, you are woman" to quote Nick Arnstein.

The Egypt sequence is just brilliant from start to finish.

One of the best moments in the series, if not the best:
Moore standing between the buildings, seen from afar as a silhouette with THAT score kicking in.
    Atmospheric to the max, goosebumps!

How Bond disposes of the thug on top of the building is brilliant. So elegant, so merciless, so deadly.

Jaws has a brilliant entrance as well. It's really frightening to see him kill the poor man. At this point you forget how silly he later would become.

Barbara Bach in THAT dress, bloody freaking boner :))

I know exactly what Sir Rog is thinking here...Rated XXX for sure...

TSWLM really re-invented the franchise to some degree. Moore had found his definite version of Bond.
Many things in TSWLM have become quite iconic. Jaws still is the best known henchman of the series to this day and it probably will never change.
Yes at one point he almost became a cartoon character (MR) but what's not to love.

The villain's plot is wonderfully utopian.
The Lotus in TSWLM is my second favourite Bond car after TLD's Aston Martin.

Never before and never again was a Bond car that fascinating, changing into an underwater vehicle, kind of mini-sub. Just bloody marvelous.

TSWLM as GF is one perfectly entertaining fun ride from start to finish.

I won't even try to rank it at this moment. It just feels it belongs into the Top10, as about another 13 Bond films :P

@BondJasonBond006, great review of TSWLM. Easily remains my favorite Moore Bond, and has almost too many iconic and moments of pure Bond to count. I love every frame (even the model of the boat with Anya being thrust from the Supertanker).
I always felt the Lotus was as iconic as the Aston Martin and later Bond actors were robbed by not having their own individual vehicle. Sure Pierce had his BMW, but compared to the Lotus? No contest. Everyone else had updated Astons.
I agree about Bach as well. She is up there among my all time favorites.
I often place SPY as my number 2 favorite Bond film after either DR NO or GF. It is pure perfection.

Totally agree. TSWLM is one of my all time favorites...and the first Bond film I saw in the cinema.

Last Bond film I watched was SP ..not all the way through though ..I skipped a chapter or two.

    Yes I enjoyed it.

Excellent review @BondJasonBond006. TSWLM is legendary. Love that film to bits. Bach is truly a stunner in that dress. Pure class, and Rog is on fire.
  • Thunderball upscaled to 4K wow that was a awesome experience, I love this film even more now.

Another legendary Bond film. I have to get a 4K TV soon, but have the Bond films been reissued in 4K?

No. Only regular Bluray upscaled. I should think 4K Bond will happen when Bond 25 is released.
  • My TV can upscale blurays to near 4k you do notice the difference, more so with movies shot on film as apposed to digital.
  • TB underwater sequence looks phenomenal, there is more information with movies shot on film so a 4k TV has more detail to process.

I'm not criticising the upscaling process, merely commenting that no native 4K editions of the Bond films exist currently. I expect the furore over Bond 25, when it eventually arrives, will provide the perfect opportunity to market a new box set.

I tweak the settings on some films, agree it took a few days for me to adjust I have Lawerence of Arabia on Ultra HD, at first it was information overload I was in shock at the clarity and detail.

4K BOND box set I want at any price, 4K is still in its infancy there is limited content right now.

    @bondjames

There are no 4K masters of the Bond movies for the home media (yet).
But if you have a Blu-ray player that can upscale to 4K and a 4K TV set, you still get the 4K experience, even if it's "only" upscaling.

I am watching the films like that since this year and I can tell you it's a completely different experience.

I have made some photos with my iPad directly from the running film. It's not even close to reality but it gives you some impression of what it's like. I didn't pause the film when taking the pics so Grant is a bit blurry for instance.

I also must note, that in many instances the picture is that clear that you almost get a 3D effect!

That is ridiculously sharp @BondJasonBond006. Amazing, given that you just photographed it using your iPad. I can only imagine how exceptional it is in reality.

Daniela and Grace look even more unbelievably beautiful and enchanting.
  • I watched FRWL recently @BondJasonBond006 the location work for the Istanbul sequence looked fantastic.

Yes I can only imagine what real 4K must do to those old movies when upscaling already is that amazing.

You get accustomed to it fast of course, I don't take it for granted though, I enjoy every second of it, always.

My best experiences so far with Bond were (in no particular order):
    Licence To Kill
    Dr. No
    For Your Eyes Only
    @bondjames @fire_and_ice and @all

not saying the other ones wouldn't look fantastic, but those three really profited extremely.
For Your Eyes Only, the underwater scenes are taking you in, you have the feeling you look into an actual aquarium!
Licence To Kill was a total new experience. The "cheap" look of the movie that gets often criticised (or the TV movie feel) is completely gone in my opinion when seeing it in that stunning colours and sharpness.

@fire_and_ice I agree, the Istanbul sequences look terrific!

I must say though, that Bond even isn't the best reference for watching 4K upscaling older films.

Some of the Hitchcock films simply blow you away. To Catch A Thief is unbelievably fantastic in 4K, I guess the blu-ray must be one of the best HD masters around.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes almost gave me a heart attack of excitment it looks so freaking great in 4K.

I know it's a lot of money, but it really is worth to allow oneself to such a TV Set and Blu-ray player.

@BondJasonBond006 I can understand what you're saying about those 3 films. Even without 4K, FYEO is an amazing visual experience on blu ray. It just pops beautifully on the small screen. The same applies to LTK & DN too.

To Catch A Thief is a top 10 film of mine so I honestly can't wait to see it & my #1 film, North by Northwest, in this format.
  • On Bluray I have North by Northwest 50th anniversay and Hitchcock Masterpiece collection boxset I have not tried them on 4k yet, I suspect Vertigo will be one of the best presentations.

    LICENCE TO KILL
Been awhile since I watched this one and I loved every minute. Tim is superb as is Davi. Great example of a Bond film that deviates from the formula but remains very much a Bond film.
Still pretty violent-especially the uncut edition on Blu.
I saw this 11 times in the cinema in the summer of '89, and was proudly supporting Tim in the role. Watching it tonight took me back to those days.
