I expect to visit the cinema on the fifth of June to watch "For your eyes only"on the big screen as a tribute to Sir Roger Moore and all the proceeds will go to UNICEF. Win win for a 007 fan.

    That's a very sweet event.

    Watching Octopussy now.

One of Moore's strongest performances but (I know this is controversial) Maud seems rather bad.

She can't seem to talk very naturally.

Not controversial at all. Adams is bloody awful in it.

Was she supposed to be Indian? That may explain it. I read somewhere that Persis Khambatta was in the running before Maud got it.

Re-watched this over the weekend (first time in a while). Moore is brilliant as always, and damn does it look good on Blu-ray. One of the best-looking Bond films for sure.

She is British. Her father was Major Dexter Smythe
Right, of course. I can't believe I forgot about that. Seems like I'm overdue for a rewatch!

It just seemed strange that they were considering Khambatta for the role at one point. Perhaps this was before they went for the Smythe angle.

Or maybe Octopussy was at one pioint supposed to be the "result" of Major Dexter Smyth's operations in the Far East... :-)

    A bit like Elektra King...

By the way, It is quite surprising how many leading ladies in the Bond franchise have a father who are relevant to the plot or are at least mentioned in the dialouges. I think of Honey, Tracy, Melina, Octopussy, Stacey, Elektra...

There are probably even a few more...

Yep, Camille and Madeleine come to mind.

True, does anybody why father daughter relationships are so often used in Bond films?

Maybe Flemming thought of making the ladies stronger or more likeable by giving them strong and likeable father figures. Maybe they also thought the audience would find it suspicious if a woman - especially in the earlier days - was independant and tough and thought that it was necessary to explain that by the women's family background.

I mean we hardly ever get any family background exploration of the male villains or allies.

Neither are what you'd call top flight Bonds, but I'm glad I watched them anyway. LALD's plot is threadbare, even by Bond standards, and most of the characters are underdeveloped, but the chase sequences are top notch and Jane Seymour is beautiful. The premise, while just a bit racist, is interesting, and Moore is still getting his handle on the character but can't seem to get rid of his Moorean charm.

TMWTGG is a mess, through and through. Again, the premise is interesting, but instead of being implemented halfheartedly, it's sunk thanks to the introduction of a nonsensical energy plot and the whole sequence from Bond's trip to Hai Fat to the climactic showdown with Scaramanga. Scaramanga and Andrea Anders are easily the best parts of the movie, and could have made for the foundation of a much better one. Moore gives one of his weakest performances, since he can't be as mean as the directing requires him to be. And don't even get me started on J.W. Pepper...

Ah well, it's on to The Spy Who Loved Me, Moore's finest entry and one of the very best ever.

Just went to the UNICEF double-feature in honor of the late Roger Moore -- saw The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only. While FYEO, as a whole, as never one of my favorites, TSWLM stands up quite well, even over time. Reminded me of how much fun the Bond movies used to be. While CR 2006 was never "fun" per se, it was incredibly well-done so it gets a pass from me. The other Daniel Craig movies are missing this ingredient (or have replaced them with heavy-handed angst and melodrama). Wish there was a way to combine the more contemporary sensibilities with some of the fun from the Moore era.

I agree. I definitely got that Moore vibe watching Rogue Nation.

    FYEO/TSWLM.

Just returned from this double feature at the theatre.

Roger is on fire. Locque is an excellent villain. Real menacing and he doesn't even say a word on film. It's great to see Moore use his wits to get out of situations and not to rely on gadgets. Spy was excellent as usual. Moore could play to the spectacle elements of Spy and to the more real and dramatic elements of Eyes.

I now think Moonraker is the best Bond film. Improves on the excellent TSWLM in many ways. Sir Roger is at his best. There's great fun with the Jaws character.

Spy is actually something of an adventure film with a strong dose of silly humour. Moonraker is an all-out parody. It's far away from anything in the Sean Connery era (including YOLT).

Quantum of Solace: watching it this time was a sort of different experinace for me. I really liked it and placed it in my favorite films of all time at # 12
    Behind goodfellas and Godfather 2
But ahead of casino(de niro) and the shining

When I watched quantum this time I felt like the action sequences were amazing and the editing was super fun and fast paced. With fun character and a gritty bond the film just flew by and it looks amazing too whether that be the cinematography or the color pallet or the director.

It also upsets me that this film set up a lot of things and themes that were not properly explored. Skyfall went for a completely different tone, theme and story( or lack thereof) compared to the previous films.

And it must have been hell to film.
The production is amazing you can really see every cent on screen in every scene. I'd be surprised if bond can ever reach the height of this film again because skyfall and SPECTRE don't stand a chance in my mind of even being in the same league as quantum.
  • Yes to everything you just said, @JamesBondKenya. QoS is an incredible Bond film. Currently #4 for me.

For your eyes only in a three-quarter full cinema with people that came and enjoyed the movie. After the last two Craig experiences it was nice to see a decent 007 outing that had good action-scenes a brilliant Roger Moore and with Carole Bouquet his easily best looking Bondlady. A great time to spend in the cinema something I had been missing in the recent times when it comes to EON productions.

    Double feature: TWINE and SKYFALL

What an eye-opener to watch the two films back to back.

It’s actually ridiculous how much Skyfall is a bad re-make, or should I say, copy/paste job of TWINE. The similarities are so glaring it’s bordering parody. Even the film’s plot structure is almost the same, with TWINE’s script being infinitely better though as it is an actual story that makes sense.

For the first time, I watched the version of Skyfall that should have been.
It’s actually very easy to do and it makes the film way more enjoyable and the plot actually makes some sense.

After the helicopters appear on Silva’s island imagine Silva managed to escape MI6 on the island and Bond flies back to London alone.
Then simply skip to the scene where Bond is in the MI6 Limousine driving M away from the government building and the fabulous Skyfall sequence will follow next to the island sequence.

That way the most ridiculously written plot in the series history is skipped.
Furthermore you’ll escape P+W masterpiece of Hannibal Lector in a glass cage, pardon, Silva. The masterpiece CGI job on Bardem’s face that makes look the surfing CGI scene like high art.
Of course the parody of The Joker and “Moooother”. Pathetic.
And last but not least you’ll escape P+W decision to spit on Desmond’s legacy and turn Q into an hipster nerd imbecile.
Those 40 minutes are a tragedy. I’ll never watch them again.

That way Skyfall could even manage to climb up a few ranks. Maybe past TWINE, TMWTGG, AVTAK, DAD.

TWINE is anything but weak. It's a modern Bond classic.

    Octopussy

Really enjoyed seeing this after a long break. So many classic scenes and a really good story that gains pace as the villains plan becomes evident.

The PTS is one of Moore's best. Technically superb and exciting.

Some great moments that really stand out are, the Sotherby's auction, the Backgammon game with Khan, Bond confronting Orlov on the train and the subsequent shoot out and of course the entire race against the clock by Bond to get to the bomb. Moore has never been so focused when he's racing to the Airbase.

Some silly jokes mar the film and are annoying because they are so unnecessary.

Moore gives a very confident performance and Louis Jordan makes a good slimy villain.

Unfortunately the same can't be said for Maud Adams or Kristina Wayborn who are both pretty awful in my opinion.

Rounded off with Barry's fantastic score and I think you've got one of Moore's best.

I like OP too despite its shortcomings.

For some reason the OP PTS reminds me of a Leslie Nielsen spoof.

(Mind you I could never understand why the two guards with Bond were wearing parachutes...)

I think it must be Roger's judo chops, the silly mustache and the nameless girl flirting as if she was in a Carry On film.
