Next up, Octopussy – the Hannes Oberhauser connection.
This film never fails to amaze me and it really makes the flaws in the later craig films apparent. The dialogue, cinematography, story, stunts, and acting are all 100% on point in this film. Not to mention the Barry style score.
However after recently watching all these oscar bait type films, when I watched CR I realized that it could and should have been up for oscar contention in certain catergoies, the following are categories that I think it should have been nominated for in the Oscars
Best actor in a lead role
Best cinematography
Costume design
Directing
Make up and hairstyle
Music original score
Production design
Sound editing
Writing( adapted screenplay)
I agree, it was the best Bond film in 2006...
I agree.It’s #1 in my rankings, and secures it’s place as a classic with each passing year.
During the 20 years I’ve been a Bond fan, Octopussy has never palled. A mark of a truly great film. Engaging story, inventive action, the exoticism of India contrasts well with the realpolitik of Germany. Plus it’s the most consistently paced picture of the Glen stable, sans LTK. Granted it does have some silly moments, mainly in India, but with Sir Rog on such form, who cares? Indeed, if one has the usually unflappable Sir Rog getting rather perturbed by events, one knows that this is a slightly tenser affair than your usual Bondian standards. Vijay’s death is somber and touching too. And Louis Jordan! What a smooth ne'er-do-well! Lovely stuff, I must say!

Next up, The Spy Who Loved Me – the Admiral Hargreaves connection.
I was grinning like an idiot throughout this entire movie – pure, unadulterated fun. The cimantic formula was tried out in GF and YOLT, but perfected by Spy. Every element came together and worked in unison. Sure, it’s rather fantastical, but a fair bit of introspection balances that out. Nobody does it better than Sir Rog!
*I wonder if Marc Forster done yet another homage – both Fekkesh’s and Slate’s apartments are shot from similar camera angles, when Bond is arriving at them. With Robert Sterling, the walk through the desert and the tie thing, one wouldn’t put it past him.

And so concludes another Bondathon. Watching a Bond film is like catching up with an old friend. That’s me done with the Bond pictures for a while, as I’ll probably run them all pre-B25 in 2019.
The film ?
Goldfinger !!
The first act is simply brilliant and probably one of the best in the series. Unfortunately, YOLT loses a lot of energy when Bond leaves Osato industries after his meeting with Osato. The scene at Kobe docks is just OK and everything that folllows feels a bit out of place. Helga's attempt to kill Bond is pointless and not written very well. The Little Nellie scene is decent but also a bit repetitive and does not really add anything to the plot. I also think that the Bond theme does not really work in that moment. Overall, YOLT has a great score but it lacks a good action track.
After that, the film almost comes to a halt with the extremely slow paced wedding and the unnecessary ninja scenes. I felt relieved when Bond finally makes it to the volcano. The climax is indeed very thrilling and a great spectacle. The set piece is amazing and the stunt work is very good, especially for the time.
The fight between Bond and Hans is good, too. Blofeld is a bit disappointing. He is quite a threat as long as he is unrevealed but shortly after his introduction he does not reflect any danger.
Tiger is a good and memorable ally and Aki and Kissy are OK. I just wish they would not have killed Aki and would not have replaced her with almost the same character.
All in all, I still like YOLT, it is a funny adventure with some larger then life elements. However, I wish they would have made a more serious spy thriller out of it - just like the first 40 minutes of the film.
Hard to argue with any of that. Good start, great finale, very draggy middle.
Snowed in of sorts, and due to Lewis Gilbert's sad departure, I decided to give his first attempt at Bond another view last night (and not being fan of TSWLM and have watched MR loads!)
Surprisingly good viewing, despite the whole turning Japanese/wedding nonsense, the rest is very good indeed! Moves at a cracking pace with one memorable sequence/set-piece after another, it also has beautiful cinematography and some impressive set design (I particularly notice Osatos office this time!)
Connery though, does seem less interested than before, even bored somewhat, and Donald Pleasence, who I really like as an actor doesn't really do much here,considering its the first real confrontation with Bond as Ernst Stavro Blofeld and it's hard to take seriously the look he adapts, in the wake of Austin Powers! (Dalm you Mike Myers!)
Action wise, this has terrific thrills, the fight after Henderson's death is a cracker as is the dock sequence filmed brilliantly from the air, and of course the spectacular finale assault in the volcano! Underappreciated theme too from Nancy Sinatra ( and Binders titles are neat too!)
A good choice on my part this evening! My last viewing wasn't as positive!
Despite this YOLT is a lot of fun. Yes its all style and little substance but its done with flair and charm.
