@QBranch I've included those categories in my list.

Pre Titles - LTK (this was difficult. Both have superb PTSs)
    Title Track - TLD
    Title Credits - TLD
    Main Adversary- LTK
    Main Girl - LTK
    Overall Plot - LTK
    Dialogue - LTK
    Score - TLD
    Settings - TLD
Action - Tie (both have some of the best action in the series)
Humour - Tie (both have a sensible amount of humour)
    Cinematography - TLD
    Benign Bizarre - LTK
    Suspense - LTK
    Minor Characters - LTK
    Glamour - TLD
    Ally - LTK

9-6-2 to LTK. That seems about right.

@QBranch I've included those categories in my list.
    I may(day) as well include them ;)

PTS: TLD (Apart from the plane fishing stunt, LTK's is pretty average)
Title Track: LTK (The standard length version is one of my faves)
Title Credits: TLD (both generic, but TLD's is the least)
Main Adversary: LTK (I'm loyal to Sanchez)
Main Girl: LTK by a fair margin, although I still like Kara
Overall Plot: TLD (complex espionage over drug barons thank you very much)
Dialogue: TLD (very close one here)
    Score: TLD
    Settings: TLD
Action: TLD (both are great for action)
    Humour: LTK
    Cinematography: TLD
    Benign Bizarre: LTK
    Suspense: LTK
    Minor Characters: LTK
Glamour: TLD (Opera, Vienna Ball (?) etc.)
Ally: TLD (LTK has Leiter/Sharkey as allies, but TLD has Shah/Saunders/Pushkin)

    TLD: 10
    LTK: 7

Wow- I expected the scores to be tighter, but it's no surprise TLD came out on top. What I like most about this pairing is that no matter what comes second, a Dalton film still wins ;)
  • Well, I suppose this is one match I won't have to do in the other thread.

    PTS: TLD
    Title Track: TLD
    Title Credits: TLD
Main Adversary: LTK (by a mile)
    Main Girl: LTK
    Overall Plot: LTK
    Dialogue: TLD
    Score: TLD
    Settings: TLD
    Action: LTK
    Humour: LTK
    Cinematography: TLD
    Benign Bizarre: LTK
    Suspense: LTK
    Minor Characters: LTK
    Glamour: TLD
Ally: LTK (when in doubt, go with Felix)

LTK takes it 9-8, which is fitting as it's only a spot or two above TLD on the ol' rankings.

Isn't it fascinating to weight the ingredients & see how they come out in the actual product for you?
To me they are SO close I sometimes can't tell which I like better...
You are right about that, but a film is more than the sum of these 17 categories, which is why some are surprised by their own results.

No, I was intending to wrap up Octopussy vs. You Only Live Twice today and post the new match.

My guess is this thread will be close after the total percentage is rounded up. We don't need two of them running.

Glad to see some more LTK love here; last I remembered, TLD was much more popular. Seems more evened out now.
  • It's been another fun round, but this match is over with. By a margin of 200-189-2, You Only Live Twice squeaks past Octopussy. Our next match will be between a distinctly average Bond entry and a rollercoaster of brilliance and awfulness, Tomorrow Never Dies vs. Quantum of Solace!

QoS is far ahead of TND in my personal ranking. Both arguably two of the most underrated entries, though I don't think TND is amazing myself.

TND was the first one I saw in cinemas, so I'll try not to be biased towards it:

PTS: TND (one of the absolute best, although QOS is pretty awesome too)
Title Track: TND (I don't 'dislike' AWTD, but it wasn't as Bondian)
Title Credits: TND (purely for the girl with the diamonds on her neck- but I quite like the QOS one. I think it gets an unfair wrap due to its relationship with the theme song)
Main Villain: tie (Carver's dramatic; Greene's a slimy little bastard, and that's what I like most about them)
Main Bond Girl: TND (tough one here as I like them both, but Wai Lin takes the prize because she could kick Bond's ass from here to China)
Overall Plot: QOS (I like its realistic plot, helping bring our universes together)
Dialogue: TND (probably not better, but more enjoyable)
Score: TND (saxophone intro for Hamburg, actually using the Bond theme...)
Settings: QOS (exotic and rich locations are definitely one of its strengths.)
Action: TND (QOS is great, but TND has more traditional Bondian action)
Humour: TND (different kind of humour; takes itself less seriously)
Cinematography: QOS (another one of QOS strengths)
Benign Bizarre: TND (Carver speaks of torturing genitals; Bond plays kiss kiss corpse corpse)
Suspense: QOS (Bond escaping M's goons; Camille's fight with Medrano)
Minor Characters: TND (Dr. Kaufmann is a great minor character)
    Glamour: TND (Carver's party)
Ally: QOS (If Bond's hobby is resurrection, then bring Mathis back to life!)

    TND: 11
    QOS: 5
    (1 tie)

I love both films almost equally, so it's a surprise TND wins two-fold.

Quantum is the stronger film in terms of acting and dialogue, but TND has more re-watch value for me. Both are in my lower tier though.

16-1 In favour of TND, I have always ranked QOS as the worst of the Bond Films and TND is fairly middlish, I'd say about 13th, but it is still vastly superior to that fail of a Bourne movie.
