I don't like the sound of a found footage film either. Just give me Jason, a wintery setting, inventive kills, and the usual characters.

Spot on. This is exactly all I need to see, and I'll be a very happy man with money well spent on a ticket.

Also, here's a trailer for the semi-prequel to 'The Conjuring,' starring the creepy doll from the beginning, 'Annabelle':

    the usual characters.

Naked girls and Corey Feldman? :D

Looks like a film coming out in Oct, "Annabelle". Its based on that hidious doll we saw at the beginning of the 2013 hit, "The Conjuring".
I am always on the hunt for good scary horror. Can't wait.

Yeah I'm interested too, even if it looks like another angry doll film, much like Dead Silence (also a James Wan film).

I don't know if I'll go to see it in theaters, but it definitely looks creepy enough to check out at some point.

I'm not much in favor of a found footage Friday the 13th either, but I certainly wouldn't mind a wintery setting for the film. I'd also hope that they bring back Derek Mears as Jason. Yes, the remake/reboot was rather pointless, but I thought that Mears did a great job.

The Purge: Anarchy is released tomorrow. Anyone going to check it out? To me, the first film was a good, yet misguided effort, with a few shining moments. However, based upon the trailers and general idea, I believe this film will be a vast improvement.

I'm not sure I will watch The Purge 2 in theatres. I was left wanting more from the first film. The premise was good enough, the execution a bit less tense than I had expected.

Because I enjoyed seeing Jason getting his ass kicked by Feldman the first time, I want to see it happen again. ;) Nekkid girls are part of the bread and butter of the series, even Jason Goes To Hell had 'em. The boob count might be low, but they were there.

I liked the way that Jason was portrayed in the reboot as well. If any aspect were to be carried over to the new reboot, I want it to be Jason setting traps for his victims.

I'd like to see that as well. I also liked how Mears made Jason a bit more athletic instead of just a lumbering mass as he'd been portrayed the majority of the time. I thought that really helped give the character a bit more menace than we'd seen in the series in a while.

I know exactly what you mean (though I do like Hodder's take on Jason too). When, Whitney is fleeing from Jason, she passed over the closed trap door, seconds before it slams open and Jason surges out and gives chase.

Mark Romanek ("One Hour Photo") is in negotiations to direct a prequel to The Shining

This looks like one of those projects that could go either way. Although they talk in the article about the studio also trying to get a Doctor Sleep adaptation off the ground, I think that's the one that they should be leading with rather than a prequel to Stanley Kubrick's film.

I liked Hodder's take on it quite a bit too, and he was good in the films that he appeared in and, much like Mears, was often the best part of the proceedings.

For those interested in an update, I caught The Purge: Anarchy yesterday. The film was very enjoyable and undeniably improved upon the first film. This time around, I actually cared about the characters. And it was interesting to see The Purge as it takes place in the outside world, and not just in one home. My only complaint is that it played out as more of an action movie than horror, but It did provide a few tense and suspenseful moments, and quite a few 'creep out' moments. Going to see Deliver Us From Evil today. I have no idea what to expect. I know it's been out for a while, anyone seen it yet?

Very nice to hear that you liked it! My girlfriend is (surprisingly) interested in seeing it, so we're going to catch a late showing tonight. Will post back here and let you know my thoughts. :)

Sounds like The Purge: Anarchy had itself a decent weekend, beating out Dawn of the Planet of the Apes on Friday by a total of $13 million to $10.4 million.

Got to be honest, didn't see that one coming, especially with all of the good reviews that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was getting.

Well, I saw it last night, and it wasn't as good as I had hoped. Like you said, it was definitely more of an action movie. It had a few nice twists and moments, but for the most part, it didn't excite me at all like the first one did. I didn't find myself caring about any of the characters - aside from Grillo's revenge-driven role - and with the box office this weekend, I see this becoming a yearly release.

That would seem to be a good bet, given the box office. I was wondering what was going to take over the yearly release crown from Saw, and it looks like it could potentially be The Purge.

That does seem to be it. I really hope it isn't the case, but it's definitely lined up that way: low-budget, high-box office return horror films are all the rave these days. The first one took place in a house, the second one took place in a city, I wonder what they'll decide to do with the inevitable third one.

Sorry to hear you didn't like it as much as I did, @Creasy47. I'm sure there'll be a third one, and I somehow like the idea of it taking place somewhere else every film. They could continue to improve upon their formula and it might not be as bad as we think.

I'm all for the low-budget horror films, as they often turn out better than the big-budget studio horror films. The problem is when the studios only see the dollar signs and try to churn out one of these films a year. Saw could have been a tremendously good horror franchise had they simply taken their time with the films, instead of making the story more and more convoluted as they tried to keep pace by getting one out each Halloween for seven years.

I'm quite fond of Saw. They quit at the right time.
Plus, I think they have found a 'replacement', years ago in fact. It's those boring Paranormal Activity flicks they keep spitting out. Yeah, Saw was somewhat controversial at first but I can see this series go down in horror film history as one of the most financially successful horror series ever.

I liked the Saw films as well, or most of them at least. I do think, however, that they could have done better with it, and perhaps even prolonged the series into a few more profitable films, if they didn't feel the need to churn one out every 365 days, which undoubtedly put some strain on the franchise's writers.

@DarthDimi, yeah, those 'Paranormal Activity' movies got old and boring really fast. The latest one was one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen.

@dalton, I found the Saw films more or less satisfying up to and including Saw V. VI is where I began to feel the writers' fatigue. I usually watch them in rapid succession as a marathon. They're short enough. ;-)

Glad to hear that there's someone else out there who likes Saw V. Thought I was the only one.

Saw VI was the only one that I found to be decidedly inferior. I think I, II, and V were the best ones. Where they really went wrong, though, was having III and IV run concurrent, which I believe was done since they had intended III to be the last one but had to figure out a way to bring Jigsaw back when IV was greenlit. I think they should have just done a time jump after the events of III and had the crimes start up again, leaving people to wonder if Jigsaw was alive or not.

I started hating the 'Saw' films after the second one, but when I sat through a bit marathon of them a few years back, I found all of them incredibly enjoyable and a lot better than I initially remembered.

This is a big shame: 'Insidious: Chapter 3' will be a prequel:

They really should have just ended things with the first Insidious. That was actually a pretty good horror film. Insidious: Chapter 2 was just awful, though, and in no way was able to live up to its predecessor.

I thought 'Insidious' was fantastic. I liked that 'Chapter 2' went into the backstory of certain characters brought up in the first, and it delivered a few scares and a wonderful ending, but overall, definitely nowhere near as good as the first one. It'll be interesting to see what 'Chapter 3' does, now that it's a prequel with mostly all-new characters and a new director. I'm just really upset that it's taking the prequel route. I don't understand how Whannell was both an actor and writer for the first two films, and now that he is given the chance to act, write, and direct for the third one, he takes it in a different direction. I do have faith in him to deliver something promising, but what was the point of the ending of 'Chapter 2'? Might that be continued in the inevitable 'Chapter 4?' Who knows.

    I enjoyed it immensely.
