James Bond - Not a Man, but a Codename

  • Sam mendes has said that he toys with the idea in Skyfall of ageing the characters.....so could Spectre mark the beginning of the end for James Bond the one we know, the title eventually being given to some other agent?

Bond's Parent's graves were seen in Skyfall. It's not a codename.

No its not... based on a character created by Ian Fleming. Clever guess though...
  • Ever since On Her Majestys Secret Service this theory has been thrown around. Seen the movies multiple times, and read a couple of the novels. Dont see much truth in it.

Excellent point well made! I too do not subscribe to this code name idea! [-X

There isn't any truth to it. Period.

Reasons why the Codename theory is false.

OHMSS: Bond pulls out gadgets seen in DN, FRWL and TB.

TSWLM: Anya mentions Tracy to Bond and he gets a tad emotional over it and has her change the subject.

    FYEO: He visits Tracy's grave!

LTK: Felix mentions that Bond was married once a long time ago.

TWINE: Elektra asks if Bond ever lost a loved one and he silently hesitates before changing the subject.

Everything or Nothing (Videogame) Pierce's bond fights Jaws and mentions his fight with Max Zorin on the Golden Gate bridge.

Skyfall: He visits his childhood home and we clearly see his parent's grave as I previously mentioned.

He's the same man played by different actors. Does that make Bruce Wayne a codename?

And in FYEO he visits Tracy's grave. And in Sf he visits his parents' tomb and his childhood's home, and so on and so forth. And he was never written as a codename by Fleming.

Yeah, we have all these minor details that seem to sort of indicate that James Bond is not a codename.

other tidbits as to why Bond is really Bond

OHMSS Bond tries to retire from mi6 when he answers the phone after drafting the letter he answers intially as 007 pauses and corrects himself as Mr Bond. Also When Bond Gets married Tracy's last name become Bond

LTK Bond was rogue and was still reffered to as James Bond. This is also true for Die Another Day parts of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace

Skyfall M reffers to working in Station H Hong Kong during the 90's odd as in Brosnan's timeline she was M (which also means Casino Royale-Spectre is a new timeline)

Casino Royale Bond Resigns AGAIN from MI6 and uses his name James Bond surely if he were retiring and Bond was a code name he would use his real name.

Die Another Day Bond is familiar with all hte gadgets because he dealt with all them in his life time

Goldeneye the PTS was set before the Living Daylights So what Did the man who was james bond in goldeneye quit and dalton's bond took over and then he came back...

there are others I am sure

I think each Bond has his own universe, he haven't aged, it's just an alternative universe where he is James Bond.
  • May I ask to call in a truly competent witness for the prosecution of this absurd theory?
I mean Mr. Ian Fleming who conceived James Bond as a real existing man. There is simply not more to be said about it. Period,Basta ,whatever!!!

Bond cant be a code name The Bond coat of arms the parents back story from Skyfall manner. Post Daniel the only way forward is a total reboot.

Why does this thread keep getting added to? James Bond is not a f*cking codename, if it wasn't obvious before, there's something wrong with you!

A code name? Oh shoot me now. Or rather shoot whoever actually believes this tripe.
No. The answer is simply No.

In brief, I've posted this before but I feel that there are three incarnations of Bond at this point and it's based on time period and the character's (actor's) age . Yes there are some inconsistencies but for the most part this fits.
Even though they play the character differently, the Bond portrayed by Connery, Lazenby and Moore are the same character in the same time period' The 007 we see in DR. No is the same 007 we see in A View to Kill.
The Bond played by Dalton and Brosnan are the same. They are both living at a time when the Cold War is ending and the years that follow. The Bond we see in Goldeneye is the same Bond as seen in Die another Day.
Finally, at this point we have the Craig era.
What about Dudi Dench's M? Doesn't that prove the "Codename" theory? No, This is simply the same actress playing the same character in the same film series but in a completely different incarnation. Craig's M is not the same person as Brosnan's M
Oh well that wasn't so brief ;)
To sum it up, even if one doesn't agree with how I see things,

JAMES BOND IS NOT A CODENAME

Especially when you consider the Brosnan M had her Moneypenny. The Craig M's Moneypenny was introduced in Skyfall as a new character.

I brought up this idea in another thread (mostly for the fun of it) and practically got my head chopped off for it. So be careful what you discuss, even if you're doing it with a smile and trying to have fun.

I agree that it's worth speculating to a degree, because of what Mendes has said. Do I think EON will do it this way? Probably not. But the possibility is worth considering and discussing--at least just for banter's sake.

It's likely brought up to start contemplating LADC (Life After Daniel Craig), which is too painful to discuss in realistic terms.

    1. No way is Bond a code name over the years. Indeed, this theory is rubbish. He was the same character, from DN through DAD.

    2. CR created the re-boot and EON's brand new vision and approach.

    3. From this point forward, does EON really want to "re-boot" with every new actor who takes on the role?

    4. Taking Mendes's words into consideration, and figuring Bond is in his 40s in SF and now SP, he's painted EON into a corner.

It originally had merit as Mr Silva was once Raul Rodriguez so it could have been correct Bond was an allias but Skyfall killed that with one scene his parents head stone. Case closed.
