1. Direction – 7 (Kershner does good work in sections here. Some parts of this really move. But overall it sags a bit. Although he gets great performances from the lead hero and villains. He captures the 'benign bizarre' very well in this with some creepy scenes - heroin addiction, Fatima seducing Bond, death in the waterbed.)
2. Screenplay – 5 (The Shrublands sequence is superior to Thunderball's. In fact I enjoy the first half hour of NSNA more than I do TB's. But the final third here is still a problem - very underwhelming.)
3. Script – 6 (The gyroscopic cigarette case scene is as good as anything in official Bond. Largo vs Bond is always good. And Fatima Blush is delivering over-the-top dialogue. Bond's cheekiness works here a lot better too. 'Free radicals' etc.)
4. Plot – 6 (Doesn't have the scope of Thunderball, but moves quicker.)
5. Action - 5 (I like the fight at Shrublands and the bike chase - otherwise it's a little forgettable)
6. Main Villain – 9 (One of the highlights of this film. Klaus Maria Brandeur is great fun. Fresh of 'Mephisto' and challenging Connery in many scenes. The character information he gets across without dialogue is impressive.)
7. Main Bond Girl - 6 (Basinger is adequate in this. In many ways her younger/older romance with Connery is more believable than a lot of Moore's around this time period - but that's not saying too much I guess)
8. Bond – 8 (Connery's most fun performance since Thunderball - funnily enough.)
9. Sets – 5 (I like the Domination game and casino scene - but the rest of it doesn't stand out)
10. Music – 2 (The music is forgettable. If only the title track was! I'll bet that is the catchy hook that plays when you ride the elevator in hell.)
11. Cinematography – 6 (Decent. Has some very good moments.)
12. Fleming - 6 (but high 8 or 9 for 'McClory'. This follows the original script fairly closely.)

13. Supporting Cast – 5 (Fatima, Blofeld, Alergnon and M are all good fun.)
14. Main Titles - 1 (Non existent really)

I've always had a little soft spot for NSNA. It's rewatchable. And as a kid this was the only Bond film they replayed on the TV in my country (they didn't have the rights obviously to EON's films) and in my town you could only get this, AVTAK and then TLD on VHS for my first two or three years of Bond fever - so I rewatched this quite often. I think the Shrublands sequence is a highlight.

The top three are pretty much entrenched. But the other films fluctuate somewhat. I'm surprised that TB didn't do as well I expected on the 2016 ranking. Will SP sink or swim, now that it's been over 5 years since its release?
Yes, it is back for 2021. Will we see a new Bond in theatres this year? Probably not, but let’s have some fun. And it’s been 5 years since we last done one of these. Time to remedy that, methinks.
In this thread gentle readers, and like it's sister threads, Rate The Various Categories – The Musical Scores! and ”Rate The Various Categories – The Fleming Novels! ” we are going to do a little experiment. I have always loved numbers, and I think I have devised a good way in order to rate and rank the Bond films, in imperial ratings;
I want us to rate the following categories, out of ten -
1. Direction (does the director do a good job?)
2. Screenplay (the written form of a movie that also includes instructions on how it is to be acted and filmed. Is the screenplay balanced, or is it too inconsistent or erratic?)
3. Script (A script contains the words, dialogue, actions for a film. DAF has an excellent script, but it has an average screenplay, just to give you some examples)
4. Plot
5. Action
6. Main Villain
7. Main Bond Girl
8. Bond
9. Sets
10. Music
11. Cinematography
12. Fleming (does the film capture the spirit of Ian Fleming?)
And these categories, these can make a good film into a great film, out of five -
13. Supporting Cast
14. Main Titles
15. Plausibility
16. Pace
17. Editing (e.g. QoS has iffy editing. I wanted to include this to differentiate between the directions and editors)
18. Tilt (this category is a reflection of how you feel, just to provide a little human touch)
Given us a grand total of 150.
This way I think we have found a good idea of how our community feels about certain Bond films, quantitative anyways... . In time, how does this differ from your own personal rankings? I hope to generate some good discussions. Sort of gut feeling into numbers. I know it is a waste of time trying to rate and rank the Bond films such, but I was trying to have some empirical evidence in our discussions, to see what our rankings were like, and if they match our my/yours rankings. And please, try to be objective in your reasons.
I shall be hosting one RANDOM film per week, including the non – official Bond films and the TV film adaption of
CR ‘54.
