Brosnan's Bond Popularity

edited February 2014 in Actors Posts: 99
From what I remember, the public loved Brosnan as bond. Most fans and critics thought he was the perfect fit for the role. It surprises me how people constantly bash him online. It makes me wonder - how popular is he as Bond to the general public nowadays? I believe that he was more popular in the 90s than Craig is today.

I can't take you seriously with that username, man. You're asking good stuff here - though this and the other thread are a bit redundant - but I'm almost worried you're going to suddenly revert to trolldom.

Wow that username sure takes me back. It's 2005 all over again. Thanks for the nostalgic trip back to when I was 16. But in all seriousness dude you should've picked a better username.

As far as your question goes Brosnan is still very popular amongst casual fans. Alot of my friends, who aren't big Bond fans, cite him as their favorite. Probably because of nostalgia and ofcourse Goldeneye 64. It's the aficionados that don't like him. Now before people get angry at me let me say that there are hardcore fans that like him very much. There are exceptions to everything but a large section of the Fleming enthusiasts didn't like the fact that his Bond films set the series back over 10 years and went back the more comical and over-the-top aspects of the Roger Moore Bond films. The Bond movies essentially became parodies of themselves. Now I adore the Roger Moore's films but I think those sort of Bond films should've ended in 1985 and Dalton's transition to more serious espionage driven stories should've been permanent. What worked in the 70s and early 80s didn't work in the late 90s/early 2000s.
  • Go over to amazon and read the reviews for the Brosnan films, plenty of people like them. Hard-core fans of any band/series, etc. on message boards are often very critical.
  • I like all the bonds, and even Casino and Skyfall, but I really detest Craig for some reason. Anyways, I guess from my experiences the online people hate him, but the real life people love him. I was honestly shocked when I saw all the negative reviews of him on this website. I remember in the 90s and early 2000s, people really loved the guy.

I believe the Beatles were more popular than Jesus in the '60s. Wonder how that turned out?

    :-S

Sorry, just kidding. On a slightly less facetious note: If you'd like to know how popular Brosnan is with the general public nowadays, try asking THEM. This is a community of Bond fans. We like ALL of the Bonds, each of us varying to some degree in our preferences. I personally rank Brosnan as #4 in the Bondathon, after Connery, Craig and Dalton, and before Moore and Lazenby. Now how about yourself: aside from not being Pierce Brosnan, why is it that you choose to disbelieve in Daniel Craig's suitability for the role of James Bond?

Are "online people" from sort of other dimension or a figment of someone's imagination?
  • Oh god, here it goes:

    Doesn't look like Bond
Can't understand what he says (mumbles too much)
Very wooden (can be said for Brosnan)
He's not that muscular, as compared to the hype
    Has a boring vibe

Personally, I think the best portrayal was Dalton. He did everything that Craig did, but better. Obviously, my favorite is Brosnan since I grew up with him. I don't know, hopefully after Bond 24, I'll warm up to Craig more.

    That's funny
    :))

I wonder what else us online people do that real-life people don't. I'm pretty sure I'm real though. I gave blood the other day so I'm not a hologram. Damnit I am a man!

I mean, 9/10 people I've met in my life prefer Brosnan to Craig (from what I've experienced) in real life. Every online page bashes him; I barely see a positive comment. I'm not trying to troll this website, I'm just shocked that most people think he's the worst.

  • I hope November Man brings some positive light back to Brosnan's era, and I hope that EON continues its success with Bond 24.
  • Try looking a little more thoroughly into this site, you'll find plenty of people saying nice things about Pierce Brosnan. And try not making so many insupportable generalizations, you'll probably find it gets you into less trouble, both in the "real world" and online. Finally, you may want to choose a different handle, the one you've got now has some unpleasant associations attached...
  • Here's the deal: Brosnan was supposed to play the role for a long time until TD became available again and the producer wanted to move forward. NBC wasted his talent but Brosnan waited. The studio favored him as well as the public. But by then the power of the studio's grip on the franchise was so strong that the producers felt the pressure to make up for the lower returns on LTK or risk blowing a chance at retaining the series already absent for 6 years. Bands like Ace of Base didn't think they should bank on it for a theme song. Although they hashed out a decent Bond flick, the producers fell back on following studio recommendations. Along with Barbara's approach, TND followed GE with camp, action and predictable formulated outcomes. Marketing and the studios really guided the series.

A good thing about GE was it's director. On set Martin Campbell did not go easy on his main cast members and was on their backs to give a good performance despite not everyone being great actors necessarily. When he was brought back for CR, it was a great indication that the series did not want to get too comfortable with itself.

Well said @dramaticscenesofQOS but I'll have to correct you on one thing. Timothy Dalton was always EON's first choice to replace Moore. They offered him the role but he couldn't except due to his commitments to the film Brenda Starr. The search continued and Broccoli ended up settling on Pierce Brosnan. After the whole Remington Steele NBC fiasco, production of TLD was delayed just long enough for Dalton to finish filming Brenda Starr and accept the role of James Bond. This whole idea that Dalton was a second choice to Brosnan that EON settled on is a misconception that won't die. It was the other way around. Broccoli always thought very highly of Timothy Dalton. He must have to have offered him the role at only 25 years of age.

Exactly! TD was always first choice but either not feeling ripe for the part or unavailable due to some other project. As you said, PB had a chance but things switched around. Although I like the TD films better, I'm glad they both got a chance to play the part. Obviously, the studio wanted PB while TD was close with the Broccoli family. Sadly PB wasn't involved with real' using his position to take action based on audience perspectives like DC but he also got too comfortable with the role.

I wish TD made Bond films in 1991 and 1993, and I wish PB made a Bond in 2004. Shame the producers didn't feel the same way. As far as DAD goes, I think the average moviegoer didn't despise it as much as Bond fanatics. PB should have made a FYEO-type follow up to conclude his era. He would be looked at more fondly as Bond.

I dont despise Brosnan at all,he is my 4th favourite Bond.
Also,if anybody is wooden its Dalton IMO more than Craig, and i find Craig perfectly ok when he speaks.

But if you dont like him then fair enough, you're entitled not to.

Let's not forget the wooden elephant in the room (Lazenby). I don't think Lazenby's performance is bad and he does not detract from my reverence of OHMSS (except in the scene in the Portugal hotel where he and Tracy are sitting on the bed), but you can't complain about woodenness of Bond actors without mentioning him. I actually think the series has been fortunate to have no bad actors to play Bond, so it just comes down to how you feel about their approach to the character

I didnt mention Lazenby because, technically,he wasnt an actor compared to the other Bond's so IMO that would have been an unfair comparison.

At the time, Brosnan was the perfect choice. He had some of the seriousness of Dalton & early Connery, and some of the whimsy of Moore. I still feel he was an ultimate "cinematic" Bond, equal to Connery's TB Bond.

Craig does have a tendency to mumble his lines.

Neither did anything new, but I would choose Brosnan over Craig. Brosnan might not have had the best era, but watching his films, I never got the feeling that all involved were embarrassed to be making Bond films.
  • I don't really comment on Lazenby since he only made one movie, and he wasn't an actor to start off with. It just wouldn't be fair. He showed potential in OHMSS, and I think he could have been decent if he stayed with there series and took some acting lessons.

I don't hate Craig personally, I just think he's miscast for the role of Bond, but that's only my opinion.

I see Brosnan as the most well-rounded Bond. I remember in the late 90s he was everywhere - on tv, magazines, video games, hair products, radio. Brosnan was pretty much a superstar during his era. I hardly see Craig at all, but maybe that's his personality.

The thing about 1991 and 1993 is that it was pushed back a few times because of re-writes and a lawsuit involving the rights to the Bond films. By the time everything was ready (1994-ish), it had to be re-written again and Dalton resigned from the role.
  • I've also heard that the producers did this on purpose to push Dalton away. They wanted someone who could bring in money to the franchise. It's hard to say since we weren't there. Dalton should have replaced Moore for FYEO onwards. He would have been more accepted. With that said, I don't really think the late 80s was a good time for Bond, regardless of the actor. Movies like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Indiana Jones were more popular.

Ok coming to this thread but not really getting why we need a separate new thread, as the discussions on Dalton transitioning to Brosnan are in many threads (and there is just tons of rumors and gossip, along with facts); and really having a hard time taking a poster with that username seriously. But anyhow ... how can you say you like CR and SF yet detest Craig? He is Bond in those films, onscreen constantly; how does that make sense that you still like the films?

I love Brosnan as Bond, I am one of the more vocal supporters of him here, and people can argue back and forth as to popularity then vs. now - yet each Bond era stands as its own testament. I regret Dalton did not get a third. I was quite happy with Pierce. I admire and greatly enjoy Craig as Bond. I thoroughly enjoy many of Roger's films, and Sean was the original and truly great Bond.

I like Casino and Skyfall tremendously; they are among my favorite Bond movies. I just don't seem to care for Craig. He could be replaced my a muppet or a lego figure, and the movie would still be good. It's like OHMSS, I enjoyed the movie, but didn't care for Lazenby's performance too much. It's possible to enjoy a film, but not admire the actor.

I don't mean to bash on Craig, many like him. For me, I just don't.

I apologize for the change in topic. The topic was about Brosnan, and I'll try to keep it with Brosnan.

Anyways guys, thanks for the input. I learned that most casual fans like Brosnan, but the Fleming fans prefer Craig.

I like the Broz on par with Sir Sean at his best, and second only to the Daltinator. Look at my top 4:
    TLD, LTK, TND, GE
