Yeah see that one didn't annoy me as much because the whole scene just built and built to that moment, and while a lot of people feel it jumps the cliff and ruins the whole build up, I find that it's quite satisfactory and it works quite well. Die Another Day, on the other hand, has so many problems that any issues I may have with the finale cannot be let go. Goldeneye doesn't have this problem, and neither do Tomorrow Never Dies or The World Is Not Enough.
EDIT: Well sorry about that, I hate it when that happens. I wish there was some way for you to know if it was embedding disabled or not, but oh well. If you go on Youtube, just type in James Bond vs. Ivan and Boris and it's the first one up there.
Not that I'm complaining about the finale we got but I'm suprised that I was wrong here.
I will say that I was pretty impressed and disappointed at the same time by this fight. It was well-coordinated and very thrilling, but somehow, compared to other fights in Craig's era, like those with Obanno, Slate, or Greene, seemed to be a little less brutal and lacked "punch", if you'll excuse the pun.
That's one thing I thought SF could've done better: fist fights. For Bond 24 I'd like more brutal fights, like in CR.
2.007 vs 006
3.007 vs Oddjob
Sorry Bond fans.... :))
Connery and Shaw in FRWL given extra tension because the actors were old rivals from their Shakespeare days but it is beautifully choreographed.
Craig versus Slade in Haiti. A brutal quick nasty fight which shows Bond is a very dangerous man indeed and it is his job to kill people.
Dalton versus Necros on a cargo net above Afghanistan. Each trying hang on and get a purchase to take a swing at the other while a bomb ticks away.
And Rog?
I am going for the Sumo wrestler in Hai Fats garden. Great arsegrabbing by Rog...
:-))
That is still the best fight in the series I reckon. Blew me away when I saw it at the cinema.
I saw it at the Odeon Leicester Square and the entire audience gasped as the cargo net slid out of the plane with them both dangling from it.
I echo these statements here at least for the best hand-to-hand combat Bond. Lazenby was ahead of his time in these scenes and totally agree it was his strength. I never noticed the cut on his forehead until I saw OHMSS in HD!
DC comes in a close second probably cuz Broz looked far less athletic and pathetic since a decent start in GE's climax scene. Did anyone also notice how DC attempted to take out opponents' knees in crane scene and vs. Patrice in SF?
- Bond vs. Grant
- Bond vs. Draco's thug in Tracy's room.
- Bond vs. Peter Franks (or the other way around in the eyes of Tiffany).
- Bond vs. Dryden's contact.
Moore's best problably was against Kananga and also the one mentioned in the pyramids (that scene always reminds me the one of the Tosca from QOS).
Dalton, besides his great capabilities, doesn't bring me to my mind any impressive hand to hand combant, except the one in the airplane against Necros, but it's value is more on the "location" than on the brutality or the fighting techniques.
I know this has become a cliché, but particuraly this fight is too Bourne for me... It's good but it lacks a one liner at the end (by the way, I'm not saying QOS is a copy of Bourne, simply that this specific scene is).
I'll toast to that.
I would also add the fight with Bond and Patrice in Skyfall.
Not only is Grant as menacing as all hell and definitely a match for 007, but the closed space in which the men fight adds to the thrills.
It will be sad if there are no more hard edged scraps in future Craig films, i suspect we have seen the last of them.
Stairwell fight and bathroom fight in CR were brilliant and I loved the fight in Shanghai with Patrice in Skyfall. Oddjob and the fight against the "widow" in Thunderball are fantastic too. And so many others that were already mentioned.
But one fight that was not yet mentioned I think and that truly is the best part of that movie...is Bond against the goon in the office in YOLT. It's entertaining, brutal and really well made. There is a shot of the bad guy getting thrown to the ground by Bond that really looks nasty.
How could I forget that one, Bond vs. Colonel Bouvar? Yes, it is one of the best, fast, energetic, rough... with great brassy music in the background.
And the pre credits fight scene in OHMSS on the beach, very artistic.
One of the best film fights of the ’60s and ’70s finds Bond being tracked by a diamond smuggler named Peter Franks, who finally meets up with him in an elevator. You have to hand it to the old-time Bond productions. They were never afraid to stage a fight where it couldn’t be fought. This is as close-quarters as it gets, and Franks gives as well as he gets, pounding Bond in the face and gut, getting pounded right back, wrestling into the elevator windows and steel mesh (if you can find some glass, break it), pulling out a pistol and fighting over it. Then Franks goes down, comes up with a big shard of glass and goes for Bond again. This is how you impress a Bond girl, as Tiffany Case watches the end of the fight.
They break out of the elevator and Franks goes for a fire extinguisher. Bring on some more fists and knees, and then Bond sprays him in the face and throws him over the balcony.
On a sidenote, Joe Robinson, who portrays Franks, was getting off a bus in Cape Town, South Africa in 1998 and was attacked by eight muggers. Robinson has a 6th degree black belt in judo, and used to be a professional weightlifter. They came at him with knives and baseball bats, but the 70-year-old Robinson took out two with leg kicks, karate-chopped another in the chest and broke the arm of a fourth. The rest turned and ran. When Sean Connery heard about this, he sent Robinson a Get Well card that said, “Give this to the muggers, if you can find them. Sean.”
Best Bond battles of the series, and probably mentioned before, would have to include, Connery and Shaw in FRWL, Bond and Franks in the elevator DAF, Bond and Oddjob, Goldfinger, Moore and the Beirut thugs, Golden Gun, Bond and the intruders at the Octopussy Island and Brosnan and Trevelyan in Goldeneye
The fight on the train against Patrice was pretty good, as was the fight in the casino in Macau. But I agree, there weren't enough fights in Skyfall. They should have taken some out of QoS and put it in Skyfall.
