I probably won't get another vote, so I would just like to recognize FRWL as the tour de force near-perfecto Bond film that it is.
I am a big fan of the more escapist Bond films but if the more grounded films were all as brilliantly done as FRWL, well we'd have best of all-worlds.
Then again FRWL does indulge escapist Bond-world elements. We do have the Spectre island and Spectre itself, so it is a nice blend in that respect. An awesome film, and featuring Sean in his cat-like deadly young prime.
All Bonds should be cast young I say. Films like FRWL are the reason why IMHO of course - and OHMSS too. Laz was only 29 when filming started.
Truly I don't watch FRWL that often, as it's more of a commited view. It's very plot driven. Much like a chess match. I'm just as happy throwing on any of the '70s Bond films, or even the Broz romps, to get that easy Bond-world fix.

And before CR goes, I just want to restate it's my favorite Bond film, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Though it seems it will lose to FRWL, I'm still proud of it for making second place; best of the rest, especially in a collection of 23. There's many reasons I believe CR is superior to FRWL, but of course, majority rules, so I respect that the latter wins, especially seeing that it is a classic film from the golden age era. It's been a good, fun game besides any cheating that took place - I'm pretty content with a lot of the films that made the Top 10, like CR, OHMSS, SF, LTK, and DN, though I do wish GF and GE were a bit higher. Again, all personal opinion, but I'm just throwing my two cents in. I've had fun voting, hope everyone else has too :)

Well said, everyone. I've fought for CR for the longest time, and though it appears that the game will soon be over, I have no problem with the positioning it received, as FRWL is one grand, perfect Bond film, and it rightfully deserves the rank it received. It's been fun, everyone.

Also, now that this one is about to be over, we will be able to start another one (unless the mods want to start two at the same time like we kind of did with this), so make sure you make your way over to the general elimination thread to throw out ideas or vote for what game you'd like to play next.

An idea of a post count requirement or a sign-up sheet has been brought up with the mods, but I haven't heard back anything on whether that's been an accepted idea or not, so I'm guessing it'll be the same way as these two until we hear word back from them.

It's been said before, but next time let's find a way to fix the problem of a horde of new identities running the tallies up and down at opportune times. It's pathetic. I know it's only a game, but we've all invested a lot of time in this, trivial though it may be. This is the one place where we can freely admit how much this stuff (meaning Bond) matters to us. When that was obviously happening, I lost interest and backed out of the game for a week or so. Maybe I noticed it because it was all focused on my favorite film (GOLDFINGER, and once that was eliminated they disappeared), but I would have felt just as frustrated if it was happening to DIE ANOTHER DAY or MOONRAKER. The point, at least I thought, was to find a consensus, not "win".

I do really wish GF had been higher; at the same time, it probably wouldn't have gotten too much past #10, seeing as a lot of people on the site don't love it as much as you'd expect. At least it did make Top 10 though; I'll be starting my 23-bond-a-thon on Friday with DN and going through that a film a day, so I'll be back in June to post my updated rankings - looking like some things will change. It would be great to do this again either in preparation for or after Bond 24 releases...

This is someone's big chance to end it. Or perhaps your final chance to save CR. Which will you choose?

    Comparing to my ranking-

Bold highlights a film that is in the same position as the elimination ranking-

001- On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    002- A View to a Kill
    003- Goldfinger
    004- For Your Eyes Only
    005- Licence to Kill
006- The Spy Who Loved Me
    007- GoldenEye
    008- The Living Daylights
    009- From Russia With Love
    010- Casino Royale
    011- Skyfall
    012- Live and Let Die
    013- Octopussy
    014- Quantum of Solace
    015- You Only Live Twice
    016- Thunderball
    017- Diamonds Are Forever
    018- Dr. No
019- The World is not Enough
020- The Man With the Golden Gun
    021- Tomorrow Never Dies
    022- Moonraker
    023- Die Another Day

Overall, the final elimination ranking is not too bad! AVTAK has made some progress, by making it out of the bottom four (I would have liked to see it out of bottom 5), and MR and DAD are in their rightful places. I had expected DN to do well, so it contrasts with my low ranking of it in 18th place. I do think that a Moore film should have made top 5 (TSWLM), but that's the way it goes... As for Goldfinger, I'm not too surprised at tenth place as I know it is not as popular on this site. And the winner is ninth in my ranking, so at least it's made my top ten! Everything else seems to be in place.

Wow, that escalated quickly! Although the final otcome was in no way unexpected.

Now it's time to reflect on the list. To be honest, for me, it couldn't really have turned out better. Just take a look at my personal ranking, published on this site the 29th of March, and compare it to the finished list here:

    My ranking:

    1. FRWL
    2. CR
    3. OHMSS
    4. Skyfall
    5. LTK

    6. DN
    7. GF
    8. TLD
    9. FYEO
    10. GE

    11. TSWLM
    12. OP
    13. TB
    14. LALD

    15. QoS
    16. YOLT
    17. MR
    18. TND
    19. TMWTGG
    20. AVTAK
    21. TWINE
    22. DAF
    23. DAD

    Elimination game list:

    1. From Russia With Love
    2. Casino Royale
    3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    4. Skyfall
    5. Licence to Kill

    6. The Living Daylights
    7. Dr. No
    8. For Your Eyes Only
    9. GoldenEye
    10. Goldfinger

    11. The Spy Who Loved Me
    12. Thunderball
    13. Octopussy
    14. Live and Let Die

    15. The World Is Not Enough
    16. Quantum of Solace
    17. Tomorrow Never Dies
    18. You Only Live Twice
    19. A View To A Kill
    20. The Man with the Golden Gun
    21. Diamonds Are Forever
    22. Moonraker
    23. Die Another Day

The resemblance is striking, almost surreal. Top 5 of both lists are identical! :O
6-10 consist of the same films, in a slightly different order! 11-14, and 15-23 (obviously) consist of the same films aswell! :O No less than eight films occupy the exact same spot (marked in black), and elsewhere the differences are minimal.

I don't know what to say really... If i didn't know better, I'd suspect myself of cheating. Does this mean I am a boring, mainstream Bond fan, or only that I have very good tastes? I don't know...

Needless to say though, from my point of view, we should be very proud of the result! =D> :D

Well, there you have it. Have to say, I'm relieved it's finally over. Not sure whether I'll participate in the next elimination game or not. Probably will, considering I can't remember what I used to do before I went to work before this game started.

I'm glad a Connery film from the Golden Era won out in the end.

Interestingly, it looks like the only ranking on this list that matches my own is Octopussy at unlucky 13. These ranking aren't a total inversion of my own. Like pretty much everyone else, DAF, MR, and DAD are at the bottom of my list for being too OTT. I do prefer the more escapist films, though, and the films I rank highest are on this list as middling and the films I rank as middling pretty much made the Top 10 of this list.

Much as I'm sad CR lost, I'm glad it was FRWL, of all the Connery's, that won. I would have been extremely distressed and would demand a recount if GF won.

Shame was hoping to see Casino Royale win as without it I never would of joined this site read Fleming etc.....

Of course I'm disappointed by CR losing out, but FRWL isn't a bad film to lose to. Interesting final ranking; in general, I'm not surprised with how the community ordered the films. Only somewhat surprising things were SF at 4 (thought it'd be lower) and AVTAK at 19 (also thought it'd be lower)

Remeber though this isn't really an ordering of the films. Its an elimination game. People use varied strategies to advance or eliminate films depending on what they are trying to do.
A real ordering of the films is achieved by going to the rankings thread and making an aggregate based on the latest individual member rankings. There would be a sample of at least 100 individual member rankings there, posted or updated in the last year.
But one thing such lists always seem to have in common is that FRWL comes out on top and DAD is at the bottom, and both by wide margins.

I like the results very much. I still don't think TWINE should have ranked so 'high' but I understand where that comes from. And DAF is a misunderstood film, as I'm sure @Perilagu_Khan will confirm. ;-)
  • The only real complaint I have about the game is how relatively early GoldenEye, Goldfinger, and The Spy Who Loved Me were eliminated. Poor TSWLM didn't even crack the top ten! Ah, well, you can't get too upset over something like this.
