Star Wars' 3D comeback could be limited to one film
Rick McCallum has suggested in an interview that, should the first Star Wars film to be converted to 3D prove a flop, then it could well mean that none of the others are given the treatment.
With 3D knocking now well on its way to becoming an Olympic sport, an interview in CeskaPozice with Star Wars producer McCallum suggest that George Lucas is dipping his toe in the 3D waters rather than diving in.
When asked about the spacing of the 3D movies, McCallum replied: "One a year, if they work. If they don't, then there will be just one [episode converted to 3D]."
Maul-ing?
There is certainly no guarantee that a Star Wars film, designed to be in 2D, will prove a big hit, but it certainly has more chance than a good percentage of newer movie.
The decision to re-release 3D versions of the Star Wars movies were, in truth, met with a multitude of groans from a fanbase that has now abided most transitions in format and the reimaginings of cinematic tinker-man Lucas.
But should you actually want to see all six in 3D this all begs the question, if you had to pin your hopes on getting an entire double trilogy made would you choose The Phantom Menace?

Personally I don't like 3D, in fact I hate it... with the exception of Star Wars.
;;) I'm yearning for those marvellous space battles and pod races in 3D big time. Granted, it's like looking forward to visiting a theme park for me, but there you are. I'm going to pay for this experience.
I so hope they'll put out a 3D version of Ep VI, since the battle of Endor is my favourite star battle of them all. Just imagine the Falcon and Wedge's X-Wing flying over the Death Star, then entering the Death Star, all in 3D. Oh boy.
:P

Again, I'm not a fan of 3D film making, let's be very clear about that. But my Star Wars fandom reaches far beyond that. Like the boy that never grew up, I want to be in a star fighter, I want to make those fancy loopings in an X-wing, I want to be in the Falcon when it spins free from the imperial Tie fighters, I want to sit in Anakin's pod racer...
Fingers crossed and please forgive a Star Wars geek for being... geeky. (A little...)

It's due for release on 10th February by the way.
i'm all for re-releases (as i've been wanting them to do with Indiana Jones for years)... but in 3D?.. really?... *shakes head*
Again I'm bringing up my point concerning the purpose of 3D in cinema: none. It's there for the sake of boosting up the 'wow' factor, which is what they do in DisneyLand. Tron 3D worked because Tron is a much more effects driven film than a story driven one. I never expected to see a deeply intellectualized film with great character development and amazingly artistic scripting. I went to see this film to be immersed in an intense video game experience. This is basically the same thing I want out of Star Wars 3D. I don't need the usual myth building or comedy. C3PO in 3D sound awfully silly in fact. No, please, just the fun stuff. For once, give me my nudie magazine without the articles. Indulge me with a fanboy's ultimate dream come true: to be part of the various battles and fights.
Once again I'm just geeking out and I apologize. ;;)
How many time is Lucas going to dip into people's wallet and you will be amazed how many FOOLS out there will open their wallet for Lucas.
I have an employee who is 50 years old, lives at home with Mommy, probably never consummated a relationship with another human being and he spent every spare penny he has on Star Wars.
He would buy the Star Wars VHS and DVDs over and over just because the box cover art is different!!
Anyway, if this SW project is as good as it sounds, I will open my wallet to Lucas. Guess I'm one of those 'FOOLS'.
The first trailer for the release will be on it's way soon too.
i take that back - it's brilliant.. notice how Darth Maul's lightsaber, the pod racers and Darth Maul himself extend beyond the off white borders - it's clearly showing that it's in 3D - and it's not playing around..... what a masterfully crafted piece of art - one that makes the works of Edvard Munch look like the finger paintings of a 3 year old........................................................
........... now excuse me while I go vomit for speaking such blasphemy..
sadly, i heard that Lucas, in his infinite brilliance is talking about rereleasing the Indy films in theaters in 3D.... i'd hate to give Mr Lucas any more of my money - but to get to see the first 3 films on the big screen, i may just have to :-(
time to bend over, and lube up good sirs..
As for these 3D releases you can be they'll use the new BD editions of the films.
I will be watching a cleaned up version of Raiders of the lost ark within two weeks, really looking forward to it.
I take this thing for what it is: a theme park roller coaster ride. There's a story somewhere amidst all the special effects but at that point, I won't care. I'll be celebrating the adrenaline pumping through my veins. Any critic who will judge the film on anything besides the 3D effects doesn't understand the whole point of this re-edit. Also, since this film wasn't originally shot in 3D, Lucas will need some magic just to pull it off. But imagine he does. Just for a second, imagine he creates a new technology that allows existing motion pictures to be given the best 3D rendering thinkable. A lot of Cameron money might be shipped to Lucas' bank account.
I agree that the 3D is mostly annoying but with Avatar I found it brilliant (The DVD lacks something) and Alice in Wonderland was pretty good. Last movie seen in 3D was Conan the Barbarian and was quite entertaining.
