Oh I am sure he can play a non-Fleming character! But I would rather have something close to Fleming. And as far as looks go, I would rather get close to Fleming than not.
But in the end, I agree... Compared to Stockholm and Copenhagen, Oslo doesn't have much to offer. Still, would've loved to see some action scenes along the fjords and/or mountains. But after David Fincher put out a bad reputation when filming at Oslo Airport for Dragon Tattoo and since the tax prices are so high (Some Norwegian movie productions actually shoots in Eastern Europe because the nature is similar and the productions costs are less) the chances are small of seeing Bond in Norway.
Me too, either Blofeld or a Blofeld-like character. IF Sweden is featured.
For Scandinavia, I would dearly love some fjord shots - even if just a brief stay for Bond, and no filming in Oslo, that would be fine with me. I am still hopeful.
It would be nice for Bond to go there and maybe have all the action centered there. I would wonder about the expenses of taking a film crew there and cutting loose. The Czech republic is very cheap for filming and that is why film companies seem to love going there.
But what do people think of modern day Bond in Scandinavia? Just some spying in the cities or intense action scenes in spectacular environments?
Mendes prefers to tell stories, while Marc Forster also loved to be, and to film, in original settings/places.
And this is exactly why I am not in favour of Mendes helming another 007 movie. Bondfilms need to be shot on location to give them a sense of place and genuity. Constantly shooting the majority of the film at Pinewood is what hurt the Brosnan films.
At least Forster got something right...
It is not only because of the beauty of Scandinavia that I'd love to see Bond there. It is a geopolitical setting that can be at the basis of great plots. Not to mention great villains. And it would contrast beautifully in look from the previous movies.
I agree - the Nordics as a whole (you're welcome, 4EverBonded) :> do have an exotic beauty in their cool landscapes. And let's not forget that the northern Nordic territories are still geopolitcally sensitive, which could easily be used for a realistic 007 story.
The Russians are particularly touchy about NATO excercises being carried out on the Norwegian/Swedish NATO boundary:
Vladimir Yevseyev of the International Security Center of the Institute of Global Economy and International Relations, as cited by Voice of Russia:
“[T]he exercises are being held on the territories of Norway and Sweden, in close proximity to Russian borders. They might thus be seen as a provocation. Russia has all grounds for concern given that ships equipped with the…Aegis Combat System can be deployed in the Arctic.”
The last sentence is an allusion to the U.S.-NATO sea- and land-based interceptor missile system, which thus far is limited to Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea but could well expand into the Norwegian, Barents, Baltic and Black Seas in future.
Great little anecdote @Thunderfinger...
I can't claim to have served myself, but I remember stories my uncle told me about his time in Norway with the Royal Marines Artic brigade. A very 'cold' war indeed!
