Jackman said he was approached....
""I got a call from my agent saying 'there's some possible interest in you for Bond, are you interested'?" Jackman said.
"At the time I wasn't. I was about to shoot X-Men 2 and Wolverine had become this thing in my life.
"But I think every male at some point thinks about playing Bond. So it was not right then but it may be right if it comes back."
And if he's too fey for the part, why has he said he would like to play Bond in the future? Perhaps he's keeping his options open. ;)
Personally, just my opinion, I reckon Jackman and Owen were Eon/MGM's first choice names to replace Brosnan, not Craig. Based on his profile at the time, Jackman must have been higher up the pecking order than Daniel Craig. It's possible Daniel Craig was the only actor that got a 100 percent "yes, we want you to play the part" comment from Eon, but, as you mention, other actors like Jackman, Owen were approached and given serious consideration. Example - actor Julian McMahon:
TV's Nip/Tuck star Julian McMahon says he is on a shortlist of two to become the next James Bond in MGM's Casino Royale.
"I met the producers for a final audition," he told Ananova. "They told me to expect a decision in a couple of months and they said it was between me and one other person. It's going to be a very nervous wait."
The other person on the list is thought to be British actor Clive Owen (Closer). The movie is expected to be released next year.

Clive Owen still maintains he was never approached but do we really believe him? Hmm....
Dramatic contrast in salary between first timers Lazenby (OHMSS) and Roger (LALD).
I say it's bs. The timetable doesn't match-up. Jackman was filming X-Men 2 before DAD was released. I highly doubt EON would've started making offers bfore they had even released the film. Plus there was still talk of Brosnan doing another one. And yes Jackman would've been too famous for EON to offer him the role.
Whether the salary was 80 grand or 400 grand the 7 film deal would've made him very rich. Hell they offered him a cool million just to do DAF. I think the OHMSS salary was merely a downpayment of sorts as EON planned to use him for the next 14 years. It was Lazenby's foolish manager and his own arrogance that saw to it that bigger things never happened.
Not to mention marrying and divorcing rich women. He's estimated to be the second richest actor to have played Bond, behind Sean Connery.
Merely bumping this thread to ask if you'd like to update the list in the OP. :)

EDIT: I just noticed they are mixing up currencies in the above article. I don't think his base salary is $39m though because that would be higher than most Hollywood stars.
@bondjames
$24m is the base salary + $6m for endorsements (Omega etc.) takes him to $30m and then there is some profit participation which could be the extra $9m.
Of course, the original contract (with the shaving clause and all that) would have made a slave of him, but it seems the producers and EON were willing to let that slide. With what he could have earned as Bond till 1989, he could easily have bought off this contract with his - obviously - not so brilliant managers.
One thought though, as much as I like OHMSS, I wouldn't have wanted to miss Moore in his best outings. And Dalton certainly I wouldn't have wanted to miss out on.
You just want Turner in the role :)
Caught me. :))
I have to plant the seeds, you see. ;)
