I have never smoked cigs or cigars, but I want to say I do applaud everybody who quits. It is just a healthier choice, all around, truly. Not easy, I am sure. But hang in there!
Thank you. Seven weeks and counting! I applaud everyone else who has had the courage and tenacity to be a non smoker! Keep at it everyone!

Heavy congratulations to you. I want to quit at some point soon, it's just really tough. Then I have something stress me out or I'm in a mood and I feel like all that'll get me out of that funk is a cigarette, and I'm back to square one.

Thank you @Creasy47. No one quits on their first attempt. Don't feel too bad. It's a long process but you'll get it eventually when you're ready.

Did James Bond influence me into drinking or smoking?

    NOPE

    BUT

after seeing The Living Daylights and Licence To Kill, I knew I wanted to learn parachuting. Being 15 in 1989 I made a lot of plans and had a lot of dreams.
Also I wanted to get laid like Bond, on a yacht, on a boat, in a big wheel, in a swimming pool.

I managed to achieve 4 of those 5 things :D

When I was asked on my first day in the army pre-selection at 17, what I wanted to specialise in, I said para-scouting like James Bond. I was laughed at.
2 1/2 years later I was operating in a special forces unit of 5 as para-scout.

Honestly, I'm not sure I would have ended up there if it wasn't for Timothy Dalton in TLD and LTK. I wanted to be him, in every aspect. His many airplane scenes and several parachute scenes influenced me into the young man I turned into.

When I am in a bad mood I occasionally have a Vodka, must admit I have found myself watching the scene from TND when Bond has a bottle and thought f... it I need a drink :)) Or that scene from QoS when Bond is drinking with Mathis the idea to have a drink pops in my head. I quit smoking 2 years ago, you have to be 100 per cent committed to do it and then you will quit.

I don't smoke so no. I do drink on occasion though, nothing crazy. A margarita here and there. I sometimes drink after I watch the second half of DAD. :))

:)) That's enough to drive anyone to the bottle.

Ha ha good point, I am early 40s now so thought I better curb my excesses ha ha

  • No, I have never had any desire to smoke—apart from an occasional cigar on special occasions—and I chose not to drink until I reached the legal age of 21, despite constant prodding by my friends. However, when I did turn 21 they fixed me a vodka martini for my first beverage. Since then, the world of Bond has led me to try various cocktails like the mint julep of Goldfinger and Fleming's Vesper.

No, Bond didn't influence me in this regard. Strange, because he influences me in other areas, including interest in fine clothes, watches, vacation spots etc.

I did smoke when younger, but it was my circle of friends that brought that on. Peer pressure and all.

I have an occasional drink now and then, but far less than I should. I've actually never tried a Vodka Martini. Must give it a shot sometime.

No. I met a girl at a high school dance. She said do you want to go for a smoke? I didn't smoke, but wasn't going to blow this.
So I said sure. We'd hang out at parties and stuff, so I had to maintain the smoking facade. Started buying, couldn't be mooching off her all the time.
Suddenly I had a habit, that I didn't get serious about ditching for 14 years.
Thread title reminded me of that story. But no Bond had nothing to do it.......it was the lure of the femmes. :x

As a fan of classic movies, I adored not only the Bond films but also Humphrey Bogart, Marcello Mastroianni and Alain Delon. All on screen smokers in their heyday. It certainly contributed to my smoking habit in my teens.

Now I'm glad to say I quit seven years ago and haven't picked it up since.

To the 40 somethings in this thread:
Weight gain has also to do with age and it's getting more and more difficult to maintain the status quo.
For the first time ever I lost my flat belly and gained lots of weight since 2015 to earlier this year.
I started training again more frequently and since 8 weeks I'm at the gym daily even for 2 hours pushing weights.
Now I almost have my Craigbond body back, no six-pack abs yet (the occasional pizza gets in the way).
To be honest not sure I can manage to get them back, might be the age, I am 42 but hey, I am just glad I had the discipline to achieve what I have now.
It's time consuming and lots of work but now more than ever I want to stay fit.
Bond is a great motivation, especially Craig.

I don't smoke and have no interest in doing so, I have too much of an addictive personality. I'd be dead already if I'd started.

Drinking is the vice I afford myself. I treat it similarly to Bond. Probably not an ideal way to live.

Yep, same for me. I didn't want to start drinking for the same reason, and when I started it became hard to quit. So I'll never start smoking.

Wow, this thread brings back memories. I'm still happy to be a non-smoker, but I've gained about twenty pounds as a result! I need to start exercising on a regular basis again. So, Bond will be my role model for keeping in shape while still drinking whatever he wants! Not that I drink to excess all the time, mind you.

No - don't smoke. My drink of choice would normally be whiskey, in winter I like a Whiskey Mac - whiskey with ginger wine. Having said that I do like a gin martini.

Don't be ridiculous. Of course I'm not that easy to be influenced by characters of fiction.

No, real world made me to take those bad habits. But today, when I watch the old Bonds, I usually get the urge to light one, when Bond smokes on screen.

Well done mate its mind over matter, I have my own multi gym and kick bag which I use for interval training I also run and mountain bike. I have trained on and off for over twenty years so lucky I know what I am doing, I do afford myself lazy phases though once focused I can get my fitness to a good level. Training is like brushing your teeth, it becomes part of your ever day life when back in the zone. Not trained for two months though trimmed down dramatically through healthy eating, starting training again in January plan to be in best shape I have been for two years by April 2017.

It's always good to set yourself a goal

    Considering that...

    A) Hypertension runs high in my family
    B) I firmly believe in the "smoking kills" prospect
    D) I've already have had a sip of alcohol that tasted TERRIBLE (too bitter)

No, no, and no. One of the things I don't really "get" about Bond is the smoking and drinking part. I never really seem to care about 007 choosing those fine cigars or blathering about wines and champagnes (which are overly snooty, IMO). I'd stick to fruit juice and pretending to smoke with chocolate sticks, thank you very much.

And to quote Goldfinger in the comic adaptation...

"I don't drink or smoke. A harmful vice..."
  • The smoking and the drinking were a part of Bond because they were a part of Fleming, and you write what you know! 70 cigs and a bottle of gin per day at his worst. It's a good thing smoking stopped being cool. As Bond himself says in Tomorrow Never Dies: "Filthy habit." Drinking in moderation, however—assuming one does not have an addictive nature—is not nearly as destructive as tobacco. But if you prefer not drinking at all, more power to you. Total abstinence certainly cannot hurt.

There aren't many drinks I truly enjoy the flavor of. I'm not crazy about wine or beer and usually will only drink one or the other socially. Bourbon is certainly my favorite. A couple ounces with a couple ice cubes clinking in a frosted glass as you settle down to watch a movie. Beyond that, I occasionally treat myself to a Vesper while watching Bond. By far the best tasting martini I've ever tried. Fleming certainly knew what he was on to.

Only thing Bond influenced me to try was smoke salmon and eggs and to reaffirm that hot tea is indeed mud water.
