This game took a knock to its credibility with the elimination of Anya Amasova before Camille, Pam, Wai Lin etc.

I agree with you re Wai Lin, but not Camille or Pam imo..

Not Camille? I thought she was pretty weak. Anya had so many more memorable wardrobe changes.

Well i think Camille had a good story-link to the film and made a good pairing with Bond.I have always had a soft gooey-eyed spot for Pam so i am bias there.

She was so miserable though in QoS (like Bond). There's absolutely no sense of fun there. Not necessarily the actors faults, but still, c'mon, it is supposed to be a Bond movie.

Anya Amasova maybe is a decent character, but Barbara Bach's performance... I'd probably rank it as one of the very worst, if not the worst in the series... Yes, in all honesty. Put Britt Ekland in the same role, and she would have done equally well. Maybe better...

The only scene where Bach's acting is convincing is when she gets hysterically scared of running water near the end... because she wasn't acting, of course... And that is exactly the kind of reaction you would expect from 'Russia's best spy', isn't it? X_X

But honestly, could any one have done it better? I think Barbara is unfairly maligned. The movie is widely loved. No one is claiming she's a great actress, but she just seems perfect for the part and very much of the time.

I love her performance, immensely wooden as it is. Sometimes somethings are just 'right'.

Time to play the devil's advocate. I for one like how the game has played out. Camille, Pam and Wai Lin are pretty cool and unique, Bond girls that really hold their own amongst so many damsels in distress we have seen too much before. Hell, Wai did more butt kicking than Bond a lot of the time in TND, as did Pam in the bar light in LTK. These Bond girls are great because if I was in a tough spot I know I could depend on them to help me out. Anya on the other hand, I care very little about. She was a cool character up until the moment that she becomes boring and one-dimensional near the end of TSWLM when she conveniently shifts from "I want to kill you in revenge, Bond" to "make love to me now." It's so out of character and it would have been brilliant if Bond and her actually fought to the death because she wanted to do him in for killing her lover. But no, she just dumbs up and sleeps with him like so many the franchise has seen before; a lost opportunity I say.

Like Bond would have had anything to fear from Anya? There's not a single moment in the film that would indicate she is a worthy adversary to Bond. She is basically just a 'guest passanger'... who needs saving from time to time...

She had promise, yes, but then the writers gave her an out-of-character send off that was lack luster and disappointing. As Bond girls go she just comes off as forgettable to me when stacked up against more interesting Bond girls with actual depth.

Obviously in a straight fight Bond would win, but in that situation she had Bond in her sights and under her control, gun trained at his heart and yet suddenly the feelings of revenge and anger she has had all film simply fly away and she sleeps with Bond. Snore.

    You snooze, you lose.

I think it would have changed the whole character of the film, which is arguably Rog's masterpiece. I see where people are coming from, but isn't it missing the point a bit? Spy is a glorious self-homage to Bond in all his campy 70s glory. It has never been done better and arguably EON should never have even thought about returning to that particular formula. But in the context of Spy, Anya is perfection.

My point is that because Amasova is no real threat to Bond, the whole 'revenge subplot' is very ineffective, dear I say, almost laughable. And if Anya really had (tried to) kill(ed) Bond after he had saved her life and been caught of guard as a consequence... it would not only be rude but also quite a cowardly act, and no real enhancement of the character...

Agreed on Bach's acting. Simply atrocious. I've seen livelier performances from a rusty pipe. And hell, she was not even what I'd call beautiful. At bare minimum, a Bond girl needs to be a woman you can't take your eyes off of.

I like Spy despite Bach's presence. With a superior Bond girl, Spy would be a classic, IMO.
