It still fascinates me that people think certain teams have a god given right to 'play' their game. It's a competitive sport and you do whatever it takes to win. If that means putting 10 men behind the ball, so be it.

I have no problem with Iran putting ten men behind the ball. I do react however when Argentina gets blamed for playing boring in the same game, and Iran not.

Quite simply, Iran were playing to a level way above their world ranking and Argentina way below it.

Exactly. As a Man Utd fan I've witnessed many games over the last couple of decades where we've faced teams who have attempted to stifle us. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. We always got on with the job, unlike Arsene Wenger who would complain about Arsenal not being able to play 'their' game. You adapt or you fail. Probably why Wenger won 3 titles and Fergie 11 during that period. Argentina should have expected that from Iran, it was obvious to every one of us and you can't always rely on your star man to drag you out of the shit. You need a plan B, C and D.

I have witnessed several games where United themselves have played with ten men behind the ball... ;)

And of course Argentina expected Iran to play that way. However it's difficult to break through whatever how many plans you have. To create chanses will always be more difficult than denying your opponent chanses. And that of course is why Argentina's (desired...) way of playing is admired and idolized, and Iran's not.

We've played every possible way I care to imagine. Which is why we're the most decorated side in the league.

It is difficult to break, but sometimes you need to draw your opponents out to make the space, not just bang your head on a brick wall.

However it's impossible to "draw a team out" if they have no interest in scoring goals themselves. That's kind of the point...

You give them space to advance. It's a cup competition. Iran attacked Argentina today, they didn't merely sit. If Argentina can't turn that to their advantage then they're not as good as the bookies would have us believe in my opinion.

I watched a good part of the Argentina/Iran game earlier, just to walk out for a cigarette and miss the goal at the very end. Shame.

Iran never attacked... They occasionally tried to utilize the huge space they were offered by Argentina. You know, the kind of Space a team who really goes for the win will leave behind. But how often did Iran bring more than maximum three players up front except for dead ball opportunities? You don't need many resources to "attack" when your opponent is desperate to score.

"If Argentina can't turn that to their advantage then they're not as good as the bookies would have us believe in my opinion."

Of course. But that's not really the basis of this particular discussion.

Absolutely, this World Cup has been mind-blowing, and I'm sure the best is yet to come.
Germany v. Ghana was a nail-biter. I was really hoping that Germany and the US would be the ones to advance from Group G, but now it's anyone's game.
However, it was a plus to see Klose tie Ronaldo's goal record.

A Nazi sympathizer ran onto the field during yesterday's Germany-Ghana game. Also, two German fans were spotted in black face.

Oh god, is that who that was? The broadcast didn't mention anything about it after he was escorted away off-camera. Though I suppose that's how it should be because the less publicity the idiot got, the better.

They seem to have a lot of them in South America which is not so surprising when one considers the safe havens for Nazis after WO2.

That Belgium-Russia game was effing boring (as in flipping) and the one good thing is with Russia losing is that we will not see Putin as he only backs winners. :D

Yes, it's good to see Capello has learnt from his mistakes with England from four years ago(!)

    Lets talk FIFA FAIRPLAY

Why the heck do the games of poule B the one with Chili, Spain, Australia & the Netherlands get played before the teams of of poule A, where by sheer >:) coincidence the host country is playing. Was it meant to make sure that they Brasil could at the last moment duck the more dangerous opponent?

The way Brasil plays all the teams with the exception of Spain will wipe the floor with Brasil, even the Aussies would overrun the Canaries.

Remember when South Korea was a Final Four team in 2002? Neither do I.

    Asia will be 0-6-2.

It seems that Allah favors his sons tonight.

And the Koreans now know how dogs must feel, they are being eaten by the opposition. :D

Wow. Who would've thought Algeria vs South Korea would be one of the most enjoyable games so far? Brilliant match.

    4-2 now. What a shootout.

If Algeria can fend off Mother Russia next (or hold them to a draw), Algeria will advance. And I know none of you bet on Algeria to advance.

No. I did not to be honest. But neither did I give Korea a snowball's chance in hell.

I went with South Korea myself. Really the other team besides Belgium was a toss up.

They are to the next round easily, due to their opponents games.
