I really don't tune in or watch soccer much. I played a few years when I was a kid, so I know how most of the penalties work and I get the general gist of the sport itself, and while I've watched a few World Cup games (mainly to make my girl happy, as she likes it), this will be an idiotic question to those of you who are huge fans:

How do some countries manage to continue along, even when they lose during the World Cup? Like the U.S: when they played Germany the other day and lost, they still managed to progress, and I think I read it was because some other country lost, as well. Why is that?

Robben for me has been the standout player of the tournament so far. He was an attack on his own today. The only player Mexico just couldn't cope with no matter how much they tried.

And from an historical perspective Holland deserve a World Cup. I don't think they will win it this year either, but you never know. Worse teams have won the tournament before.

I agree with the worse teams jibe.

And disagree with calling the Dutch a bad team, they have won all 4 games with an average of 3 goals a game. The worst teams have been send home so far with Argentina & Brasil still remaining in the tournament, and they are not very good either.

If the best football would win the World Champion should be Columbia so far.

The first three games were played in a group of 4 nations, the best two nations continue to the current knock out phase. A win gives you 3 points, a draw 1 point and lost match zilch. The first sixteen countries lost in the group phase and now 16 continue, then 8, 4, 2 and WC

Ahh, okay, so a loss doesn't necessarily mean you're out. The only sport I follow where I know how progression and an end to the finish works is the Stanley Cup, where it's a best of seven games.

Generally two wins out of three gets you in the next round. The next rounds do not allow any lost matches, in that case you are out with the exception of the losers of the semi-finales they get to play for place 3 & 4.

That's not what I meant! :) They're far from bad. I'm just pointing out that they don't need to be rock solid world beaters to win. :)>-

Well this is Greece v Costa Rica game is living up to it's billing. Utter dirge so far. I hope for the tournament's sake, Greece get knocked out. They are the most boring team ever. It was bad enough when they won the Euros in 2004.

Sometimes I can't tell if Robben intentionally takes a lot of dives, or if he's just really unsteady on his feet and falls easily.

Watching the Greece/Costa Rica game now. I was just about to say it was pretty boring, but as I was typing this, Costa Rica just scored. (That's the second time today that's happened. XD)

And they tied at 1-1. I would not have guessed that.
Don't know if I can finish this before I go to work - I hope so!

Hope Costa Rica can defy the odds, big ask.

I want CR to win, but Greece is getting lots of chances. :(

Jackdagger, can you please type something when CR is attempting to score?
    Thanks! :)

I'll work on it later; thanks!

Listening to BBC live radio ...

and just read this comment by them on BBC:
Costa Rica defender Oscar Duarte was sent off nearly 45 minutes ago - and he's still played more passes in the game than any of his team-mates.
They are just camped in and around their own penalty area.

CR apparently looking tired and spent.

I won't hate it if Greece wins; they are trying so hard. I just prefer CR and I feel for them.

Costa Rica just had a good chance, they could hold out. Penalties looming ☺

Lol @Sammm04 thought same when I first saw the name of app.

Greece had five on two on the break and fluffed it, after some pressure from Costa Rica.

@4Ever: CR just made a decent run, but a Greek defender knocked it out. The corner was easily knocked away.
I hope this doesn't come to penalties. Both teams have been giving it all they've got, and neither one deserves to lose on penalties.

Brilliant save from Navas in last minute, both teams looked shattered. credit to Costa Rica defence for holding out. PENALTIES!!!

Don't expect many of these penalties to go in, be surprised if the players have the energy to walk up to take them.

I take that back superb penalties. Go on Costa Rica masterclass in penalty taking!

    Two great games today.

Glad one of the North American teams advanced.

that was a really poor match with the Greek getting the correct payment for their efforts, indeed nada. With so much attackers tearing into the ten men defense of CR and not being really able to finish the job shows the lack of skill and therefor justified absence from the rest of the tournament. That said the captain should have received a red card and CR a penalty for such a clear handball foul in the penalty box.

CR did end up with ten men and thanks to the total inaccuracy of the Greek offensive did survive by sheer miracle. Not a very great match by these middle American football players, but then again they were never really in trouble.

The penalty shoot out was the best thing about the match, too bad about the 120 minutes before that. I loved the comment of the Belgium host who apologized for waking up the remain viewers because the Greek scored in the 92nd minutes and also be the bearer of bad news namely overtime of 30 more minutes of football.

Here's hoping France and Germany both win today to set up a Quarter Final clash. This World Cup is shaping up nicely.

Suarez has finally admitted what he did and has issued an apology:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28099336

The BBC reported that it is being suggested Barcelona have put pressure on him to apologise if he wants to join them in the transfer window.

I doubt very much he'll be at Liverpool next season.

Have to say well done to Costa Rica! Cannot fault them at all with the spirit and desire that they are showing!
