If there's any truth to the rumour that Eon will sell up after Bond 25 - that's a game changer moment. It means B and MG won't be casting the next actor. The next producers could have a completely different idea of how Bond looks, his height, age etc. It's another element to add to the mystery!

That's true - but I reckon a new producer will be less likely to make any controversial changes - at least in the short-term - as they'll want to maximise potential box-office returns. As the old saying goes, it if ain't broke, don't fix it 🤓

I'd like to think that would be the best possible scenario, but my cynicism causes me to believe another producer would actually cast a franchise star like Robert Downey Jr as Bond. Or they'd cave in to the negative press that describe Bond as an outdated 1960's joke and produce a spoof Bond film with Seth Rogen as Bond. Looks like I'm making a joke as I read over my own comment there , but we did get that Green Hornet spoof that starred Rogen awhile back.

    I thought he was short

If you think 5'10 is short then you must spend an awful lot of your time hanging out with basketball players 😉
In my opinion all the actors who have thus far portrayed 007 have brought some (if not all) of the literary 007's characteristics to the screen. I get sick and tired of the constant Craig bashing (too short, too ugly, looks like a Russian mobster, etc, etc ad infinitum); lest we forget, Fleming himself described Bond (through Vesper's eyes) as resembling Hoagy Carmichael (who was no oil painting) and, at various times, described Bond as looking 'ruthless'. Further, Fleming's Bond was a serious man doing a serious job, frequently disgusted with the job he held and prone to bouts of mild depression - and Craig has brought that to his portrayal in spades.
I trust that EON will pick the right man for the job when Craig departs the role, as their track record so far has been, on the whole, pretty sound. Who that man will be is anybody's guess right now, but we can all be fairly secure in the knowledge that it will not be a deformed wheelchair-bound dwarf of Afro-Carribean descent.
So long as it's not Henry Cavill (aka 'The IKEA Wardrobe') then I'm sure I'll be happy with Bond no 7.

    Just fact checking:

Funny. Craig probably does look more like Hoagie Carmichael than any of the other actors.

Interesting point, Craig is very close to this description. Goes to show how much it depends on how well the actor, producers and director pull it off.

    Thanks for pointing that out!

He's tall, Caucasian, has blue eyes, is handsome in a ruthless kind of way. How does he close to that description. If you ask me he's very close to fleming's description....
You ignore the context. From Connery up to and including Brosnan we got the same Bond. Who by the way doesn't necessarily fit Fleming's description. Craig portrayed someone else, he's totally different from all the others, but he did it so well that for many he's the best Bond.

    According to Fleming:

Name: Bond, James. Height: 183 cm, weight: 76 kg; slim build; eyes: blue; hair: black; scar down right cheek & on left shoulder; all-round athlete; expert pistol shot, boxer, knife-thrower; does not use disguises. Languages: French and German. Smokes heavily (NB: special cigarettes with three gold bands); vices: drink, but not to excess, and women.

Seems a cross between Carmichael and Gregory Peck? Perhaps Timothy Dalton is the Bond actor that looks the closest to the image on the right although they don't look that similar.

When I ask the question, I think to myself. The Bond I picture when I read the novels.
It changes from Dalton, to Connery to Moore. Depending on my mood.
When I watch the films, each of the actors IS James Bond at various times.
I think Bond is more than any of the actors who have portrayed him. They've each brought something to the role, and have owned it.
Even with Fleming's description of James Bond, there is a certain element of ambiguity to the part. Personally I think Bond is whoever you want him to be. However the majority need to go along with you. Within reason. If that makes sense. ;)

Elba would have been a dream choice but I think he probably is too old now. I agree with you in a way @Pierce2Daniel, I've said a few times that I'd rather have an older more grizzled looking actor for just a film or two than a baby faced one for five who we have to wait years to properly grow into the role. But I do think 40 something is probably the limit. I really doubt with the current gaps that we'll see Bond 26 before 2024 or 2025, at which point Elba will be 52 or 53, and probably pushing 60 by his second film. Not sure the producers would go for that, I think after Craig they'll want to go younger again. I also think that he's shot himself in the foot by playing up to the hype and rumours so much. He would've been brilliant and I'd be over the moon if he was cast but I think that ship has definitely sailed now.

I'm really rooting for Jack O Connell. He's young enough to really revitalise things after Craig but also has real presence, charisma and a sense of danger to him that I think a lot of the other younger choices lack. I also think he's the sort of actor Barbara would want and I read an interview with him where he quietly mentioned that Bond is the only big franchise he'd consider doing, so we don't have to worry about Marvel or anyone snapping him up in the mean time. I think he'd be a really exciting choice and he's a very possible one.

No I don't. You however ignore the fact that Moore intentionally steered away from looking too much like Connery. To my mind Connery's en Craigs'imersonations aren't that far off from eachother. It looks further because of the Gentleman Moore version, and the more classic version portrayed by Timothy. Brosnan again had a childrens'friendly version, which Craigs isn't.

All in all, my point still stands: the basics of all the bonds have been the same (or very close to eachother) and all in a way fitting Fleming's descriptions more or less. I am vehemently opposed to throwing that away, it doesn't fit the story. Look at Dr. Who: that story allows for just about any incarnation, which keeps the whole frenchise alive. Bond just doesn't have that much stretcheability. Look at how people reacted even to the 'stepbrother' story. Suddenly giving Bond a family was just wrong, even though it wasn't true family.

Just watched Poldark series 5 Episode 1 on BBC, and it must be said how right Aidan Turner is for Bond. He a really growing as an actor and you can see in his performance the same alpha masculine confidence which is crucial for 007. Every Bond has that despite the difference in portrayals (even Craig).

What is interesting is in this series it appears Poldark is
recruited by the government for work in "covert" matters. In one scene he is escorted with a gun in his back to an M like figure who says "we can use a man with your skills". It's almost like he is becoming an 18th Century spy!

I believe that Turner would be the perfect man to bring back the aspect of charm and warmth to the character that Roger and Pierce gave it. He is very endearing scene presence with the looks and charisma to match. He just is James Bond, and is growing as an actor. Soon he will be the perfect age to take over the reins.

I agree @Univex if he isn't Bond in 2023 (or whenever the next one is) then it's a huge missed opportunity. He will be the perfect age by then also. I want a darker haired Bond next and Aidan has that mysterious edge to him. It's the perfect fit!

The guy's perfect for the role. He's got the acting chops, the intensity,... And he's very Daltonesque, which, in my book, is always a good thing.

Yes, and have you noticed he always plays quite headstrong, proactive characters? It's like he is already playing in that wheelhouse, I don't think he would have to change much.

It certainly doesn't impact his chances negatively at least. I wonder if it's a role he wants, or if he's the kind of actor that's likely to stay away from franchises.

(And I know he's starred in The Hobbit films.)

    Edited my comment above. ;-)

There's a difference in playing the lead to playing a minor or one character in an ensemble.

Me neither. I've seen him act Bond many times in many roles. And he's done it brilliantly.

This series needs to go back to the seductive espionage element. I love the Craig era, but I'd take right now an Aidan Turner era with true espionage plots, even more Fleming elements, barracuda swimming, garden of death conundrums, baccara playing,... They seem to think Craig is the true Fleming Bond. He isn't. He's a brute blunt instrument that looks like a mixture of an eastern europe thug and Steve McQueen, that's all. Hey, I liked that about him for the last 13 years. And in CR he had that emotion and intensity going on for him, but not anymore, not since. I love the Craig era, and I do like the guy. But I long for a Bond I can identify with. Turner would do.

All my opinion, of course ;)

Agreed. I have never really felt close to the Craig Bond because he didn't have the allure that Bonds of the past had. Mystery, danger, arrogance, I don't know the exact formula, but I know it when I see it, and Turner is the real deal. I think they could make a old-fashioned classic Bond adventure with him and it would work really well. Audiences are probably humgry for something like that in the coming years. You can't go wrong. ;)

He did display those in CR to be fair, but after that he went far to morose for my liking. Kinda sucked the fun out. Turner is the perfect guy to bring some of the old-fashioned flair back.
