More tacky than funky I have to say. I envision Bond's kitchen as a very spartan, metallic affair.

Well, yes it's a little bit tacky maybe – but probably very "of its time" as well. I like the copper details though. As for Bond's apartment, I like both the DN and LALD one.

As for the Craig Bond one…well, it's understandably very spartan…

Craig's is a little too spartan--Bond might not be very interested in interior decoration, but he still would have some. In the novel of Moonraker Fleming tells us that Bond lives in the ground floor flat of a converted Regency house. It has a "book-lined sitting-room" with "an ornate Empire desk near the broad window." The "smallish bedroom" has "white and gold Cole wallpaper and deep red curtains." Sounds tasteful and not too ostentatious.

Exactly @Revelator I don't think it suits the Bond character to have a flat like Craig's. To me Bond always had a sense of style and sophistication. To have a barren apartment with little décor to me is not what the character is about. Jason Bourne? Ethan Hunt? maybe I can see them not having a great place. But Bond to me was always different. Sad to see him reduced to the level of a common action hero of the day.

Definitely agree. I can sort of understand the direction they took with his apartment, but it doesn't sit quite right with me. I definitely would've preferred the sophistication of the previous two apartments.

Craig's apartment was situational for the story, wasn't it. He'd been bouncing around and hadn't really reestablished it after the events of Skyfall.

I'm not sure about that. When Moneypenny enters Bond's flat (at the 33 second mark in the clip below) she asks "Have you just moved in?" Bond says "No," in a tone suggesting he's bewildered why she asked. She sarcastically says "Well, I like what you've done with the place."

Incidentally, here is an article on Bond's Spectre flat.

That's an awesome insight into Bond's flat on the link.

I should better describe my comment on that as his resistance to reestablish himself. From Casino Royale, dialog isn't always meant to be taken literally.

To me the exchange "Have you just moved in?" and Bond says "No" in some way is a variation on Bond and M in Casino Royale where she questions him on Solange.
M: I would ask you if you could remain emotionally detached... but I don't think that's your problem, is it, Bond?

OO7: No.
While that is specifically the item he battles with. Yes he literally placed his belongings in the flat. But didn't establish himself there and "move in" as shown on screen.

I think the dialogue in Spectre plays on the audience's pre-conceived conception of Craig's Bond as the sort of brutalist who doesn't care that much about his furnishings to begin with. Craig's Bond would therefore never fully move in because he can't be bothered to. That might work for Craig's version of Bond, but it's inappropriate to Fleming's Bond or any other.

Nice article; thanks for sharing the link @Revelator!

The situational aspect and that Craig's Bond never truly seem to reestablish himself is most definitely key to the approach they did with the set design for his SP apartment, but it doesn't really feel "Bond" to me at all. I still haven't got that "Bond feeling" with Craig's films, and this is a perfect example why.

It's a good thing however, that the few interior items we see in his apartment are more traditional/vintage instead of slick and modern. That leather armchair looks very comfortable.

If I was looking to get myself a new desk (and could afford it), I'd really like to own this one, designed by Danish designer Bodil Kjær in 1959:

Featuring in FRWL, YOLT and OHMSS, they're still available – although they look a bit different these days, as seen in the second photo. You can read more about the desk here.

* The saga of the black table, continued!! (& enter the table lamp!)

* The suspiciously similar illustrations & the saga of the black table, Part Three!!!

* The plucky orange table lamp

* The black table that would not die, Part Four!!!!

* The case of the prolific desks and cabinets

* Office lamps a-go-go!

* The lamp that changed shades

* Return to the clock and yet another lamp!

* The desks don't quit!

* Maps don't play favorites

* The vengeance of the lamps & the case of the stolen prints!

* Double drawer trouble

LOVE this idea for a thread. Let's get back to the FILMS and stop arguing about production and business.

Can someone post a screenshot of Mr Big's hideout? I recall it is very dark, sexy, and taboo. It delves into the taboo if I'm not mistaken. Apologies if the screenshot is not suitable for this site, it is a kid friendly site.

Had anyone noticed, when Mr Big peels back his fake mask, he goes from irate, downright nasty, to "all smiles" in a matter of seconds. My friends and I have coined the term, "all smiles", specifically to describe Mr Big's transformation in this scene, and transferred it to other aspects of life.

Here we see Mr. Big in diguise, wearing the mask. 20200727-154009.jpg

Here we see him in the mask with altered garb.
20200727-154025.jpg

Here we see him start to remove the mask in a fit of rage

But here we see him all smiles as he removes the mask entirely.

Yes! Love Kananga's transformation in this scene. For general things you notice in the films, that you find worth pointing out, there's the I've never noticed that before… thread. It's one of my favourite threads here on the forum!
