It’s ironic that 00s have a very short life expectancy, but it’s not something many want to acknowledge is a possibility for a specific character.

Honestly, I’m even more excited because I always commend EON when they break formula.

I'm all for breaking formula, I just see it as an extreme.

I see it as a cop out and trend follower.

If it works, I’m fine with it. That’s all I’ll ever ask for. Never be afraid to upset the apple cart.

I've seen it. I won't do a full review yet, but regarding the larger issue in discussion:

It's surreal how well the ending works in the context of the film. Because it's not careless. It's not done for shock. It is earned. It is perhaps one of the most earned major plot twists in the history of franchise films, ranking up there with Darth Vader's reveal.

And that's an ambitious thing to shoot for. Especially nowadays, with audiences this jaded and cinematic storytelling this oversaturated with "epic twists."

But they aim for it, and they nail it. The overwhelming emotion of the final act works for me because of the builds leading up to it. The film is a pure crowd-pleasing joy to watch, and the entire finale sequence once they reach Safin's island is pretty much nonstop tension and actions.

Zimmer's score is superb. Always appropriate.

And the action scenes, honestly, are the best of Craig's tenure without question. The way they're staged, shot, edited. We're talking M:I-Fallout levels of competition here which arguably take the crown back at times just for the sheer Bond style of it.

Absolutely do not discount this film just because you've spoiled it by reading a text version of the plot on the internet. Never before has there been a Bond film like this that needs to be experienced to be appreciated, and never before has one delivered something so memorable and moving.

Just my two cents as an initial reaction.

What happens during the incredible “Final Ascent” track?

Do we get a funeral? Frankly, I don’t mind at all the his Bond gets this end. He’s had the most unique, celebrated tenure. It sounds like it provides a real catharsis and has a lot of people realizing just how much they love the character. I’m more than fine with this!

Funnily enough, I haven't heard the score on its own yet -- only through watching the film. But I'm aware people seemed to love that track.

All I'll say is, there's a reason it is what it is. It couldn't be anything else.

    EDIT: Oh, and --

RE: funeral, I won't speak to anything along these lines.

    But.

There is this one thing near the end. It's a very simple thing. It's just...words.

But I recognized those words the second they appeared. And that was actually the moment that reduced me to near-tears. It was too, too, too, too perfect. It was in fact such a deep cut reference into the lore of Bond -- more specifically, the lore of his creator -- that I'm fairly certain it will go over most peoples' heads. Even many fans won't recognize them.

But for something so small, it felt like the biggest, most satisfying emotional hammer down and it essentially sums up the film's entire theme/message while also being...somehow...the perfect and only sentiments to convey with the "finale" of James Bond.

I was moved by a lot of the film. But that moment wrecked me.

Too perfect. And clearly, purely, for the real fans.
  • If it works, I’m fine with it. That’s all I’ll ever ask for. Never be afraid to upset the apple cart.

I was a blubbering mess coming out of the film, but I felt this in a big way.

Everything I saw felt earned, felt right, felt Daniel Craig.

A friend asked me to describe it to them in non-spoiler terms. All I could come up with was:

No Time to Die feels like it finishes Craig's tenure as strongly and appropriately as Casino Royale started it.
  • I’m kind of shocked with how many people are surprised about the ending given the fact that
Craigs Bond is it’s own separate continuity from the past and future movies. It was pretty clear they’d take this as a unique opportunity to conclude Bond’s story with his death. I’m not sure why this is so hard for some to realize it also doesn’t have much implication on the future of the franchise. It’s like Batman. They could have killed off Bruce Wayne at the end of TDKR and it wouldn’t have any impact on Affleck or Pattinson. Same goes for Bond.

Since the ending is pretty much confirmed here, I'll skip this one.

I'm excited to see the movie for all the wrong reasons. I've read all the spoilers and I can't wait to see how bad of a trainwreck it will be.

    Don't worry, I won't. I haven't found any enjoyment in Craig's era for a long time. :)

So why bother seeing a film you know you’ll dislike? Confirmation bias?

Pretty sure the press generally liked the film, will probably end up in the mid to high 80s on RT. Will be interesting to see how audiences react.

Now that we know what happens at the end, I am really starting to get curious about how they're going to approach the new James Bond actor's tenure. I really hope it isn't all doom and gloom like Craig's has been. Not saying I haven't appreciated Craig's movies, but enough is enough.

But I'm afraid that the doom and gloom trend will continue since it seems to be very befitting of our culture right now.

I’ve loved these films, but I agree. I would love to see what a director like Taika Waititi could do with a Bond film. Something glamorous, stylish, fresh, and fun.

The one thing I never wanted to see in a Bond movie has happened, based on what I’ve read. Seems like I had a bad feeling going into this movie. Was beyond excited to go see it. I am a HUGE Daniel Craig Bond fan. Just can’t see the need for them to go the direction they did. I would have seen the movie multiple times, but not now. Won’t be watching this one. I can’t believe I waited 6 years for this. Wish it had ended with Spectre.

I’m with you. Absolutely deflated, almost gutted, with the direction they’ve decided to go, if indeed the spoilers and rumors are true (which sounds to me that they are). Horrible.

Well, I was just spoiled the ending and now I’m debating if I even want to go to the theater to see it. I may just watch it at home. The rest of the movie may be good but that one thing is enough to sour my experience, even if it’s well done.

I know Craig’s movies are their own thing, but come on. I knew them going that route was a possibility, but still. Ugh.

    So basically
Bond, Felix and Blofeld all die.

I’m not ready for this one. Not at all.
  • I'm really glad I knew to find this out before going into the theater. I don't want to be disappointed in the moment. My excitement is at zero, and I'm almost dreading going to the theater. I'll see it once just to give it a chance regardless, and because it's Bond, but I'm ready to refund the rest of my tickets as soon as I walk out. I'm just glad I own the 50 year blu ray set, which contains the good Bond films. I wouldn't be surprised if I don't pick up a copy of NTTD and cancel the pre-orders of the making of and 007 Archives books.

That’s really it. There’s no way I’m going to be able to let go and enjoy the ride if the entire time I know this is where we end up. I’m just sad that my excitement was cut off at the knees. I’m glad I know, but what a difference a few hours can make.
One part of me is happy that I saw the spoiler so I could cancel my plans to go to the theater and just watch it at home. The other part is just really disappointed that all of my excitement was just flicked off like a light switch. Even two hours ago I was still so excited and hyped to see it.

I’m glad that many fans enjoyed it last night, and those who have yet to see it but got spoiled are still excited. But I just can’t get excited now that I know where it ends. I would just be sitting at the theater in a sour mood leading up to the ending. And I don’t want to watch a Bond film feeling like that.

Kind of fitting in a way, I guess. That Craig's departure is just as divisive as his announcement.

You should all go. What if it turns out to be a great ending to this particular story? Besides, NTTD is already making the history of the franchise. I wouldn’t miss it.

I feel like a lot of you are being dramatic, but I guess we all view Bond through very different lenses. I just think it’s too bad that this is such a big deal that you’re willing to cancel seeing it already disregard it from the franchise as a whole sight unseen.

Or maybe I’m just a sucker that is too easy to please. I dunno. It’s disheartening because I wanna see fellow fans get enjoyment even out of what they least expect.

Well, I haven’t seen anyone, even those who liked the film, say that they’re glad he dies.

Yeah but how about the emotional punch if the sacrifice feels really earned?

I knew Bond would’ve died the moment I heard Final Ascent and I had real goosebumps just listening the music.

But surely you can see how it dampens our enthusiasm for going into the theater and seeing a new James Bond film. I mean we’re sitting there knowing it is leading to his death. There’s nothing pleasant about it from this perspective. How are we supposed to enjoy everything in between? I don’t need some grand arc to define the Craig Era. I just wanted a fun Bond film. I’m so disappointed and, rational or not, angry.

That about sums it up, yup. I've had enough death in my life this year. A coworker, a pet, my father taken by cancer. I was looking forward to an escapist Bond film to bring me out of my hole, not sink me further into it watching my favorite fictional hero get offed.

A film can be fun and still pack an emotional punch at the end. I got that with SKYFALL. I got that with STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (though they’d later undo Spock’s death anyway). Maybe I’m not so down on the idea of a character dying because I’m so used to that at this point, with the most recent example being Tony Stark in the Marvel films. People were still able to have a fun time at the movie AND get an emotionally satisfying heroic death at the end. They’re not mutually exclusive concepts.

The word will spread fast and it will be interesting to see how it affects the box office.
At the very least it’s not going to get repeat viewings from a lot of the fans. It might even deter some of the regular cinema goers.

Honest question, does knowing Tracy is killed immediately after their wedding dampen your enjoyment of the fun in OHMSS? Bond fails to protect the woman he loves, and Blofeld gets the last laugh on him. It ends on a somber note of defeat :)

I hope you all give the film a chance. It sounds like 90% of a classic Bond romp, and you can enjoy that and hate the ending. I’m that way with a lot of the films. I Really like FYEO, but HATE its PTS that makes a giant cheesy joke out of Bond’s greatest nemesis. So I usually grab snacks from the fridge during that scene.
