@ImpertinentGoon , I saw Nomi s "the one that works" as a reference to Craig s on set injury.

And for the next Bond, Irma Bunt returns in Septipussy.

    Oh, that's good. Both.

    Excellent, thanks for that.
I also assumed the 'knee' reference was to Craig's own injury. That kind of self-referential stuff is why I wanted Bond to say 'I'd rather slit my wrists' when Felix asked him to take on the mission!
I'd assumed that Nomi's response to Madeleine using perfume was because she's a badass with disdain for girly frippery, but the fact that Nomi thought she was doing it 'for Bond' is an even better explanation. Good one.
I had wondered if there'd once been something in the script that didn't make into the film about Nomi somehow taking Bond's gun in Jamaica, hence the 'disarming young woman' line - but no.
No mention of a missile to the face either!

    - The pool in the bunkers is described as a "bacterial acid farm". That doesn't really help. (p. 120)

Yes they are basically breeding the nanobots in that acid bath alongside the bacteria produced by the volcanic water’s algae. Cary said all of this is based on some super speculative theories dealing with bio producing nanobots.

Looks like I posted this in the wrong thread, my apologies:

I find introducing Bond in the screenplay as "standing like Adonis on a lido overlooking the sea. She [Madeleine] turns, feeling his eyes on her." is interesting — considering Adonis is a key example of a dying/resurrecting god analogous to the changing of seasons.

Of course, one doesn't have to dig to deep for a parallel in the film. When Safin goes "home", it is winter. Everything dead. When Bond goes home, it is green and alive.

Very good. The author also claims in a later response tweet that Fukunaga confirmed this to him personally. So, if that were true it would mean M. Nomi is officially 005.

That's really cool. Since we never learn what Bond's 00 designation was before being given back 007... I wonder if they swapped? That would make sense.

Forgive me if this parallel has been mentioned before but I had only realised it from reading Priscilla Page's excellent article on the Craig era, she says: 'There is a beautiful symmetry to the beginning and the end of this Bond’s story: he’s initiated into 007 status by killing two people, and he retires by saving two people, the two people he loves most'.

Yep exactly. And the last line of CR/NTTD are the same thing. A name, a nature changed. That article is so good, so so good. It captures everything I love about the Craig films — all these big, mythological ideas about life and death.

Oh so many beautifully expressed thoughts from Priscilla Page, that's a joy to read.

Leveraging Paul Haggis' comments he wanted to “see deeper into who [Bond] was, to open up that crack in his soul because his soul is hardened, and we wanted to pry it open and look inside.”

    No less her own insight.
During Craig’s tenure, the static character has transformed into a man who evolves, building on Fleming’s Bond and leaning into that darkness always present in the author’s work. Though Martin Campbell’s Casino Royale was a relatively faithful adaptation of Fleming’s first Bond book, the films that followed would fast-forward Bond to the end, taking us from an origin story straight to the gloomy emotional terrain of the final books. It wasn’t so much a departure from the James Bond we knew as it was an exploration of Bond at the end of his run. (Sam Mendes cites the last three books as his inspiration for Skyfall, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is an obvious influence on Cary Joji Fukunaga’s No Time to Die.) The fantasy now hewed a little closer to reality. Craig’s era is one defined by loss, grief, betrayal. And the pain of it all leaves a mark in a way it hasn’t for other Bonds.

    And this. And many more.
Safin is a little boy flash-frozen in his trauma, whereas Bond evolves, heals, grows — he becomes a man. His decision, his final heroic act, his sacrifice is made meaningful not just because he saves the world but because he saves the people he loves within it. In Casino Royale, Bond says: “You do what I do for too long, and there won’t be any soul left to salvage. I’m leaving with what little I have left.” No Time to Die allows Bond to salvage his soul.

I think we had talked about him having a fight scene going down stairs that in a lot of ways hammers home how physically and emotionally traumatic this life is going to be for James and the people he loves and then there is the action scene going up a flight of stairs at the end of it all. It doesn’t fit perfectly, so it might just be a coincidence.

Bingo. This is the key from the five films (the word "soul" is used or alluded to repeatedly throughout). He lost something to become 007, and the whole journey is him getting this back. Blue eyes, eyes are the soul. So "She does have your eyes" means...

Exactly. It why I think the stairwell parallel could be a coincidence, it's certainly a broad enough metaphor, rising to heaven and descending to hell is well-worn cliche and it is interrupted by the fight with Safin but if you couple it with Bond climbing the ladder and the with the track that underlies it being called 'Final Ascent' which calls to mind a spiritual ascension I think it's interesting to compare the two.

Yeah, that's totally the point of that whole ending — after he sheds the sweater and goes up the facility. Not to mention the word choice when Bond and Q have their final talk (for Christ sake, James or it's eternal).

To bookend these thoughts, a point made earlier was Bond descending the stairs battling the Ugandans in CR. He already has a military past and the two kills that earn him double-O status. But the death of the second man is particularly gruesome, and Vesper witnesses it. And is drawn in to participate in it. Later Bond is confronted by its effects on her.

It's part of the path that made him further commit to the role of assassin with all the dirty elements it entails.

Yes! Exactly. And the stuff with the "blood" in the shower. It's really smart stuff, how these themes were developed and journeyed across all five films.

Birthyear is a bit dodgy (1962 is the birth year of the film Bond series), but I like it. And much in the style of his parents' tombstone.

With 1962 as the birthyear, one could think the good people of the Faroe Islands where very disappointed in NTTD and believe it has killed the franchise. ^^
