But if he doesn't sign, can I sell a few Blockbuster stores to a few of you? Guaranteed, great price!

The last story (I linked to in my previous post) said he had been cast and would be unveiled as Bond in March… 2023. So I’d say we probably already know if it’s true or not! :)
Just for perspective, the U.K. papers were running a humorous story about Harrison Ford’s doctor playing the Indiana Jones theme when he was having a colonoscopy; a story Ford told in an awards speech about seven or eight years ago. John Williams mentioned it in an interview last week.

It’s amazing that these rags get away with utter nonsense.

This Bond hoax surely must end once there is no signing by this week?

Sky News and ITV are a bit more credible than The Sun, and Sky are still running the story at the top of every hour.

@jetsetwilly , if the new 007 was about to sign, this would be the breaking news, not the fired co-founder of Verve ready to sign with Paradigm.

And, unlike the Sun, or Sky, or whatever, who are just repeating the Sun’s “report”, this IS in Deadline’s wheelhouse, as it is in the wheelhouse of The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. This is their bread and butter, and not even a peep from them (and these outlets actually have legitimate entertainment reporters).

I don’t have a horse in this race, but to think a script is being worked on now (the only thing in the “report” I believe), and they cast not only without auditions, without a script, but by coronation, is the biggest BS signal in this entire joke… if ATJ ever becomes Bond, it’ll be after a heavy vetting process and audition process. There is t a shortcut to the role.

We'll know one way or the other by the end of this week. This story seems to have caught fire quickly more than the usual BS rumours that often circulate.

No more or less than the last time the Sun ran it.

I dunno why, but the part I found funniest was that EON were ‘waiting to hear back’ from ATJ. Like he’s gone on holiday and is purposely ignoring his work calls or something. Presumably won’t be in touch before Friday either and the story/that gun barrel he filmed last year will have to be abandoned.

But yeah, this is most likely BS. I’m sure there’s a reason why ATJ is constantly being linked to Bond with these sorts of overblown stories. Could be as banal as the fact that his wife has of course done work for EON/he’s obviously met BB through this connection. The deepest I’d speculate is perhaps he’s informally met with the producers about whether he’d be interested in auditioning down the line. It has to be said though that if the latter were true (it may not be true, I have no idea), other actors would have been approached/ATJ might just be the most high profile amongst them, and no auditions will have begun yet.

    The timing feels off.

    Mi6 reported in February 2024:
Barbara Broccoli was in attendance. Asked by Baz Bamigboye for an update on the 26th James Bond film and casting the next 007, Broccoli was politely non-committal. "No”, she said, “there’s nothing I can tell you about the next Bond film. There’s nothing. Nothing is happening yet.”

Late last year she said Bond 26 was still some years away.

Daniel Craig was announced October 2005. Casino Royale released in UK November 2006. If Johnson is announced in March 2024 you would think Bond 26 would be set for release in 2025. That is not consistent with Barbara Broccoli's recent comments "Bond 26 still some years away."

Film critic/producer Gareth Owen works at Pinewood studios. He does film reviews on the Tony Blackburn radio show. He recently said Pinewood is still quiet and not yet recovered from the recent writers and actors strike. Owen ghostwrote Roger Moore's autobiography 'My Word Is My Bond'. He is a legitimate source at Pinewood.
    Thursday 29 February 2024
UK film industry struggles to recover after strikes.

As the Oscars approach, the film industry is hoping to pretend everything is back to business as normal after the strikes of 2023. But research this week from Bectu (the Broadcasting Entertainment Communications and Theatre Union) shows that the UK industry has yet to recover. In September 2023 when US productions were shut down, 75 per cent of the UK workforce was out of work. In February, that number had only fallen to 68 per cent

There's been no mention, no rumour, of Bond 26 going into production at Pinewood. If Bond 26 is a few years away, possibly 2026, why announce Johnson in March or April 2024? Seems too early?

Well I just found this regarding an article from 6th Apr 2005 in The Sun that suggested Craig was offered a 3 film contract to play James Bond #6. Craig wasn't announced till October.

While it’s just as likely to not be true, after finding out about this article regarding The Sun reporting Craig’s casting six months before the announcement, makes me think that this rumour could have some truth to it. But it’s also The Sun so we’ll see, but I do wonder if part of the hesitation here is the actor they’re reporting? If it was Suter or James, would some be more onboard with rumour? Makes you wonder.

To me, whoever it ends up being, ATJ or otherwise, its up to them to deliver in the film and prove themselves cable of portraying a compelling version of James Bond. So I am generally supportive of whoever until I am sat in the cinema and about to watch the film... then its over to them.

Three days or less The Sun will be exposed as the rag they are, or ATJ becomes Bond.

@jetsetwilly had put in his first bid on one of my Blockbuster Stores (great value!), who’s next?

(I’m joking and not trying offend anyone who is an ATJ fan)

    Stranger things have happened :)

Also, taking this rumour as gospel for just a second, if ATJ is to possibly sign a contract this week, why would we find out if that’s true this week as well? Surely, confirmation of this with an announcement and a press conference would come later?

Sky News are still broadcasting this as main news. Euronews and BBC are now reporting on this too. This story is being circulated by more respected media outlets than the last rumour spread via the likes of Daily Fail and Maxim.

If Craig signed six months before the announcement - which seems a credible timeframe - studio space at Pinewood, all locations etc would have to be confirmed soon after Craig signed the contract in order to meet the November 2006 Casino Royale release date. April 2005 to November 2006 is 19 months of production.

If these rumours are legit then Bond 26 should be set for release November 2025? I guess so. That's consistent with Craig casting and Casino Royale's release date.

However none of the above is consistent with Barbara Broccoli's recent comments about nothing happening yet/Bond 26 still some years away. Could she be economical with the truth? Yeah, I guess so. I don't know why she would do that though. She could have said "We're currently in early pre-production, a screenplay is in process but I can't confirm when Bond 26 will be released." But she said nothing is happening so I don't see any reason why Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be announced this month or next month or this year. 🤔

To be fair, Craig stated nothing was happening with Bond 25 and then later the same day confirmed his involvement.

I'm ok with this news if true. The bookies have now slashed the odds.
There are far worse choices they could have made (and admittedly a few better ones too).

On the report by Sky News, the correspondent mentioned the Christopher Nolan rumour, they said filming is set to get underway this year and that it'd be a big announcement like Craig's casting.

All of which is new information, which leads me to believe it's probably false. It's nice to have something to discuss though

Either its false (and someone at The Sun will hopefully get their ass kicked) or its true and Barbara has been very good at keeping it all a secret whenever she was asked.

The Mail on Sunday understands that Bond producers are on the brink of approaching Madden, 32, to take arguably the most famous role in British film.

It is understood that Barbara Broccoli, the executive producer at Eon Productions who has the final say on all Bond characters, is likely to approach Madden in the next few days.

It's similar to the latest ATJ news although the Madden item didn't go as far as to claim Madden would be signed. The reporting is similar in vibe though.

Short of something that none of us know about the guy, there’s no reason why ATJ couldn’t be the next Bond. But he will have to audition, and he’ll ultimately have to be chosen. There’ll have to be an official statement by EON. And, most likely, there’ll already be a script and director in place.

I’d also imagine that when auditions start up (whenever that’ll be) it won’t be a secret, at least for us here following this stuff. We won’t necessarily know who’s in the running, nor their exact timeline, but we’ll know that that’s what they’ll be doing. Who’s actually picked could be a surprise, but we’ll get earlier signs that a Bond film is going to be on the way.

Is the story different? It's still 'Johnson is 007'. I really don't think they care if they look silly: folks who read it will have forgotten by the end of the week, it's just us fans who will remember, as we remember them doing it last time.
And as Denbeigh says, if he gets signed this week it doesn't necessarily follow that he'd be announced, so there's enough plausible deniability built into the story. There's little reason to believe this story, and more reasons to think it's untrue. That different (and the same) outlets are reporting The Sun's story this time is more a sign of how busy the news cycle is today than any reflection of the story's veracity.

Despite Broccoli's recent comments about nothing happening, I guess Amazon would put gentle pressure on Eon to get things moving so a November 2025 release is possible. I dunno.

If you were a tad cynical you could make the case these 'Bond news items' are click bait. It drives traffic to the sites.

My gut feeling is Bond 26 won't be out until 2026 so the next actor won't be announced until 2025 so I'm taking a wild guess this is click bait news. 😉

The correspondent was saying "I've heard Christopher Nolan is directing the next Bond film" it sounded like she was speculating to me if I'm honest. She was saying AJT would make sense if Nolan is directing because he likes to cast actors he's worked with previously.

Then she said they need to announce soon as they're planning on filming at Pinewood later this year. I think it's pure speculation personally

    It's Tuesday.

They said he signs by the end of the week-- and they're not talking Sunday of this week. They're talking by Friday.

So if this is true, then we will know, by the latest, in three days.

The breaking news at Deadline since last night has been:

    https://deadline.com/2024/03/bill-weinstein-in-talks-to-join-paradigm-talent-agency-the-dish-1235861884/

+1. Especially since Baz works for Deadline now.

    They'll print anything these days.

We'll know one way or the other by the end of this week. This story seems to have caught fire quickly more than the usual BS rumours that often circulate.

No more or less than the last time the Sun ran it.

    Etc.

Maybe it’s true this time but I’d bet on this being a crying wolf situation.

This story is different to the last one, and also leaves The Sun with a bit more egg on its face, as this is supposed to happen this week.

Maybe The Sun does have a reliable inside source though? It looks like they got it right back in 2005 too - https://www.theguardian.com/film/2005/apr/06/jamesbond.news
