I agree, if he does Dune: Messiah, then after thats released in 2026 maybe, he would have to go straight into Bond 26 pretty much (if they want it in 2027) and I'm not sure he wants to do two big projects back to back.

There's no way Villeneuve can direct BOTH Dune: Messiah AND Bond 26 within the next 2.5 years.

Bond would have to happen in 2028 at that point.
  • @Mendes4Lyfe

Exactly. Villeneuve ending up directing Bond 26 is extremely unlikely at this point.

Either Bond 26 will be taken over by a big name director like a Nolan, and things will happen quickly, or we won't see any progress for the next couple years and things will remain dormant.

Still not entirely sold on Villeneuve for Bond honestly. His films are always impressive visually/filmmaking wise for me, but they rarely get me in the gut if that makes sense (Prisoners being the major exception). I'm afraid I sometimes find him a bit boring as a director.

But whatever will happen will happen, and I'll give any film/director the benefit of the doubt.

I´m hoping for Nolan but the leading candidate in the rumor mill seems to be Edward Berger...

    Yes, why not Berger?

Berger himself just stated the other day he's not at all involved - could be a lie, of course, but I still don't feel like we're any closer to production beginning, so who knows.

Indeed, but that logic assumes everyone denying involvement means they're secretly involved. It doesn't sound like any "insider" or source or publication out there trusts they've even begun work on a script, so I can't imagine they have a director locked down yet either. I'd love to be wrong though.

Agreed, perhaps a formal offer hasn't been made, but I wouldn't surprised if Eon has a more informal way of checking out directors.

I really don’t know if anyone’s been chosen or even officially approached/offered yet. So Berger is very likely telling the truth - he’s not involved. No one is as far as we know.

Berger interests me. More so than Villeneuve. But ultimately it’s impossible to say from my point of view.

Bond would have to happen in 2028 at that point.

DV’s scheduled to shoot D3 in July 2025. Shoot date is for 6 months.
Broccoli will also be shooting Othello in 2025.

DV will be done shooting in early 2026.

Shortly thereafter, the director and story announcements will be taking place.

A new actor will be chosen in late 2026.

Principal shooting begins in early 2027.
Film will be released in October of 2027.

Anyways, DV isn’t the director I’ve personally advocated for. But I’ve been saying he is the number one candidate since February on this site.

If I’m wrong, I’ll be happy to eat a sh!t sandwich.

Who would be your top choice?

@sandbagger1 , I don't have a top choice, but I've mentioned Mark Mylod, but I also like David MacKenzie, two guys I can't see ever helming a Bond picture.

I'd love to see what a Fincher Bond film would look like, and, again, don't ever see him directing a Bond film.

So, I suppose, anyone I would love to see, I can't actually believe they'd ever do a Bond film (either because the producers wouldn't want them, or the artists may not connect to the material). So really, whoever EoN chooses, I'd likely be happy with. I really don't have any one horse in this race.

Just like casting: I don't think it'll be ATJ, especially via some fantasy coronation that the media would have us believe. But if he did win the role after auditions, I'd shrug my shoulders and be first in line.

So, yeah, I suppose I have my dream faves (Mylod, Fincher, MacKenzie as director; Sope Dirsu, and lately, Aaron Pierre and Theo James as Bond), but I'm under no illusion that any of these mentioned have a shot-- outside of Theo James being a very strong contender and has a possibility of getting the role.

My long-winded assessment is, in the big picture, I don't think I care too much who directs, who gets cast, or who writes. I'm positive that the first film (no matter who's in front of, or behind the camera), will be an exciting and thrilling debut. I have enough faith in the team at EoN that they know what they're doing and, when the time comes, they'll make one helluva film.

So I'm really not bothered, and when I really think who I'd like as director, or in the lead role, I am pretty certain, outside of Theo James, none of my choices will ever be realistic candidates.

So as Bond would say, I'll "leave it to the professionals", and just make sure I'll get my seat on Day One of the release...

Cool, peter. For what it's worth I don't think any of you choices are outlandish, though Fincher is likely too pricey (would be a coup if they could get him, though!).

    Thanks @sandbagger1 !

If you had the power and all the financing in the world, who’d you choose? You mentioned Mangold before (I still think that’s an interesting choice); do you dream of anyone else running the show??
  • "Film will be released in October of 2027."

If that will turn out to be the case, then B. Broccoli will be over 70 by the time the next Bond actor's second movie is released!!

It can’t really be earlier than 2026 anyway. 2027 sounds like a good prediction to me, and I’m hopeful for no later than 2028. We’ve got to have at least 2 per decade!

I can see why people might like Theo James as Bond, but his age has got to count against him now, no?

I am very supportive of him as Bond, and while his potential is dependent on a number of variables, age is definitely problematic; he is at the outer age range and time is ticking.

I like Theo as well, but he just looks too Greek looking. Bond should look very English, or very Scottish, very Welsh etc.

Theo James is quite old right now. Younger candidates would have to be pretty bad but it's not impossible for that to happen.

I think if this year 2024, EON announces the director and actor (separate dates). Then in October/November 2025, hold a press conference to reveal the title and cast, and then start shooting. BOND 26 could be released in October/November 2026. That's me being optimistic!!

But it looks to me that EON's schedule is to have the same six year gap like we had between Dalton and Brosnan. So we should 2027 could be the year for the return of 007.

This doesn’t sound particularly “very English, or very Scottish, very Welsh”:

“He smiled at himself in the glass. Not a particularly distinguished face, but somehow the geography hinted at some distant foreign ancestor, perhaps a Corsican pirate. Certainly the eyes were very cold.”

From that description, Theo James would fit…

I'm not someone who always understands where the director ends and the writer or cinematographer begins, so I find it hard to know who I want. Mangold, obviously I've mentioned. I've been a fan of several Park Chan-wook's films, and of the tv adaptation he did of The Little Drummer Girl (some very nice visual touches in there), so I'd be curious about what a Bond film directed by him might look like. Not likely to happen though, I don't think Eon would go for him and I don't think he'd be too keen to work within the set boundaries Eon would likely impose.

I was impressed with what Gareth Evans did with The Raid 2, and I liked Apostle, and though I only caught the first two episodes of Gangs of London, that pub brawl with Sope Dirisu was great on a tv budget, so I'd be interested to see what he could do with more money. I'm not sure looking at his CV that he has the technical experience to work on something as big as Bond, though. I think it would be a big leap, and I'm not sure Eon would want to take that risk.

I really like a director who could bring suspense to a scene like Hitchcock could and Tarantino does (only Hitch is dead, and I wouldn't want all the other stuff Tarantino would bring). I'd like them to a really strong visual sense, too. I don't actually have anyone who meets those requirements, though.

Not optimistic enough! If Nolan is writing and directing the movie, it could be released in the summer of 2026!

You have fine instinctual tastes, @sandbagger1 .

Count me as someone who would applaud EoN if they brought Park Chan-Wook into the fold.

I also think Evans is very impressive, especially with the way he films combat. THE RAID 1 & 2, and Gangs of London (both seasons), were heart-pounding. I’ve wondered about him as a Bond director… I don’t know… sometimes I’d like to see him do one, other times I wonder if he has the depth and understanding of character. I don’t know and i don’t have an answer. But he’s certainly an interesting filmmaker…

Don’t doubt yourself, my friend. You have some really nice insights (I enjoy your posts very much, and they give me pause (like the Mangold suggestion, which still buzzes in my head, lol!!)).

Well, that sounds an awful lot like Hoagy Carmichael. But in all seriousness, Theo's father is a pureblood Greek, which is different than a long lost distant ancestor.

It's not a big issue, but it's a bit off-putting when the popular notion of Bond is as the quintissential English Gentleman. I am aware Bond's mum is Swiss and his Dad Scottish, although the latter was a bit of retcon late in his Bond novel run.

Summer?? Since Licence To Kill (1989), EON doesn't release in summer.
