    What's the problem with Kane?

Bob Kane stole credit not just from Bill Finger, but from a lot of other people, Jerry Robinson and Dick Sprang were big on building Batman's supporting cast. Bob Kane would have killed the Joker off after his first appearance. The biggest thing Bob Kane did for Batman was to combine the words "Bat" and "Man." Bill Finger died in poverty, when he shouldn't have. Bob Kane could have given Bill Finger credit in his lifetime, but didn't. The last Batman thing Bob Kane saw before he died was Batman & Robin. That still wasn't enough karma for Bob, in my mind. So, true Batman fans aren't too fond of Bob Kane.

I don't really have a personal problem with Kane myself, but his refusal to acknowledge the contributions others had made to the creation of Batman (and the Batman universe) has made quite a few Batman fans a bit angry with him. Kane spent his entire life claiming sole credit, while Bill Finger probably did more to bring us the Batman we know and love than Kane. The 2017 documentary Batman & Bill and Marc Tyler Nobleman's book on the subject (a graphic novel) discuss all of this.

In truth, Finger had agreed not to take much credit, but he died a relatively poor man while Kane was doing rather well. If Kane had been fair, he'd have let Finger share a little more in the profit.

I guess many Batman fans, like their favourite character, seek justice. Hence why Kane isn't exactly every Batman fan's idol, while Finger seems to be doing a whole lot better in that department. You could say that fans are giving Kane the Finger. ;-)

Sorry @DarthDimi you posted your post, while I was writing mine!

As for other superheroes getting their own Hollywood Walk of Fame, I'd support Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Captain America for sure!

Okay thanks, didn't know that. I guess he still should be co-credited though.

I'm sure he always will. But as @MaxCasino pointed out, Kane's contributions are few and far from what we consider iconic. Others, and indeed not just Finger, built the Batman.

It wouldn't have been so bad if Kane had been a good sport. A little thank you to all those other blokes from time to time would have done miracles. But his arrogance has led to him being posthumously put to shame. I wish it hadn't come to this.

I wish that Bob Kane would have given Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson and Dick Sprang credit with him. They deserved it. Unfortunately, he got a solo credit, Bill Finger died in poverty, and we had to put up with Kane's annoying wife in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin (Gossip Gerty, in poor acting and adding nothing to their stories).

    Here's some positive news:

    https://www.cbr.com/matt-reeves-the-batman-part-ii-finished/

    Casting should be announced soon!

Also, Happy Early Batman Day! Something I've noticed recently is how much of Batman's other characters (both allies and villains) from his world have gotten their own fair share of media in the last 20 years. I don't think this would have happened if Batman Begins hadn't been a success. I'm thankful for how much the world of Batman has been opened, in all forms of media. I'm thankful to get to share my love of the Batman mythology with you all as much as the James Bond (and various other fictional mythologies) mythology. Thank you, and have a happy Batman Day!

And as for Gerty... I can't stand her. "Brucieeeee!"

I really hope that DC and WB let Ben Affleck write a graphic novel version of his script. It seems that Batgirl movies just can't get off the ground, in more ways than one.

I really don’t enjoy Affleck in many things, but I DID love his Bruce and Batman in BM v SM. He looked and acted the part. And I was excited when I first heard he’d be writing and starring in his own solo adventure. Still stings a little to read about it again!

I wish more Batman alumni would have been there. Just not George Clooney or Bob Kane's wife! At least Paul Dini was there. One of Batman's greatest writers.

Well, it does seem like WB and DC love Batman above all else. Plus, you have a few people in charge that care about the character(s) over the Sony people (Avi Arid namely).

I just finished the second season of the 190s TV series, and...

Well, we complain about how stupid Bond villains sometimes are, but frankly, Batman villains are not much better. Batman and Robin are captured at least once per double episode, sometimes even incapacitated, and you're telling me that not a single villain, and I repeat that

    That :>

    NOT . A . SINGLE . VILLAIN !

has ever had the bright idea to take off the Dynamic Duo's masks ? Come on, if I were a villain, that would be my first thought. What gives, Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman ?

On the other hand, I must say that the series was really entertaining, and the fights were really well choreographed.

This is why I don't debate about Bond villains getting novel spinoffs. While I think it could be an interesting idea, I can definitely see why people wouldn't like the idea.

Just watched the first episode of The Penguin, very strong start with excellent character work.
Sofia Falcone is a woman I would instantly want to steer clear of.

Edited: Finished episode 2, I am enjoying the show though...
Oz really should not be getting away with a lot of what he is doing and how vocal about them, the show going forward needs to ease off on plot armor IMO.

Really excited about this actually! Similar to James Bond, a lot of spinoffs for Batman's supporting cast seem to be on their way! However, compared to IFP, we know that WB and DC are definitely keeping Batman in the spotlight. Plus, most of these spinoffs seem to be movies. Still, it's a great time to be a fan of the supporting characters in both worlds!

There's more character development for Batman/Bruce Wayne in this passage than in the two Tim Burton movies combined. I'll be seeing the author speak possibly next week. It sounds like a sequel (that isn't Batman Returns) is on the way. For now, this is promising.

I don’t think any were gonna happen with James Gunn running DC. The only reason JOKER 2 got made was because the first made a billion dollars so WB was not going to just sit on that. Now they probably wish they did.

I think a Joker sequel could have been done well, and I’m saying this as someone who wasn’t keen on the first one. The script is its biggest issue.

Yes, the script did feel like it needed a rewrite. And I'm someone who generally likes it. I honestly think Dr Hugo Strange should have been it. Brendan Gleeson would have been perfect for him. So, I honestly think Joker 2 was a creative gamble that didn't pay off like the first one. I still feel that it will gain cult status one day.

Hugo Strange could have been a good antagonist for Joker 2. But yeah, it’s an odd one. The production notes on wiki are unusual - all this stuff about Phoenix having a dream and coming up with the musical concept, it initially being devised as a genuine Broadway musical, James Gunn giving notes only for Philips to ignore them, Philips for some reason choosing to film in more expensive LA locations rather than London studios/effectively inflating the budget…

If Todd Philips had done it like a normal film, instead of a musical, it wouldn't have been this bad. But then again, it's a sequel no one really wanted.
Musicals don't work all the time. But it can be an entertaining and successful genre, if done right.

I think making it (at least in part) a musical could have worked. It's certainly not uncommon to include musical numbers in otherwise dark films/tv shows (I'm thinking of something like 'The Name Game' in the second season of American Horror Story, which I think was the kind of tone they wanted with Joker 2).

I dunno, I think a lot of the ideas were there for an interesting sequel that could have easily have been better than the first (I'd argue the first one isn't a particularly interesting film in general really).

Exactly. The first one isn't exactly spectacular. It's quite a depressing film to be honest.

The first one just made me want to rewatch The King of Comedy. Not to say the fact that Joker bears a lot of similarities to that or Taxi Driver is a bad thing. It's just that I feel something like KOC is much more twisted and darkly comedic, which I'd say is what I'd expect from a movie about the Joker.
