Have so many heterosexual men had so many conversations about how good-looking and sexy a particular guy should be? :D

We think we're right all the time about anything.

No, but more seriously, I think we need to be wary of our bias and false perceptions. Conversations with female friends and colleagues when Craig was cast (and after) made me discover that what we think is a handsome man and what heterosexual women perceive as handsome are two very different things. I remember a secretary in a school where I worked who had a Daniel Craig calendar. I thought at first she was a Bond fan. She said: "oh I don't care about James Bond, I think Craig is hot!"

An ugly Bond is a mistake. Being handsome is greatest weapon the next actor could have.

Men want to be with him, and women want to be like him.

Yes exactly: for example men think Paul Mescal looks ordinary, but women have a different reaction to him!

And I'll also add that beauty standards change with time and from generation to generation. When Brosnan was cast, I remember many women in my circle of friends, who were around 18, thought he was oh so gorgeous. Ten years later, when CR is released, the friends I have, now almost 30, think Brosnan was too much of a pretty boy.

One of the problems with casting an actor who is on the younger end of the age range is that there is more of a chance that he will be seen as a “pretty boy”; a little mileage on an actor appearance suits Bond.

I think Rog looked a bit too model handsome in the early 60’s when Connery was cast.

Yes that's certainly a risk. But I do think they'll go for a younger actor this time. Not a spring chicken, but someone in their 30s. I think they can find someone suitably mature looking in that age range.

For me what we're talking about is interesting. It's the entire package: interesting face, style, voice, and how one carries themselves physically. Which is why Bogart worked on screen. Could a young Robert Redford (had he been English) have worked as Bond after Connery? Great actor, but never a Bond. The guessing game with any actor is whether we can see him as Bond. Sometimes someone shows up and they're Bond. You either have it, or you don't. For me neither Moore nor Brosnan had it despite the success of their respective series

Yes, as good as Brosnan was, I don't think he was ever much of a sex symbol, even less now. Not that there aren't women who fancy him, of course, but he's a bit sexless compared to Connery or Craig. If there are lots of women who think the next guy is incredibly sexy then I'd be all for him, and whether a handful of straight blokes, secure in their sexuality or not, think his ears stick out too much or whatever that won't make much difference to me- if there's lots of women saying they fancy the pants off him, that's who I'll be listening to!

@MTM - I get what you're saying about the judgment of women, but I also don't care. If his appearance works for me, mine is the only judgment I am concerned about.

I have always believed a man can recognize beauty in other men. Though you're not saying this, it amuses me some feel the need to tack on men secure in their sexuality. Why can't a man say, he's a good looking chap and not worry about it? My question is rhetorical. I know the answer.

The sexless bit is interesting. Certainly worthy of a discussion in how men characterize the sexual appeal of another.

Which is fine and I don't disagree, but if I'm going to listen to anyone, I'm much more likely to be swayed by the judgement of women, and feel it myself too, than I am a bunch of blokes pontificating about whether this or that guy is handsome enough. Do I buy that Craig has a masculine sex appeal to women when I watch his films? Yes I absolutely do.

I don't know, as you say, I'm not the one who brought it up.

I've just never heard of Brosnan being spoken about in the same way as Connery or Craig, he doesn't seem to be lusted after much. And if yours is the only judgement which matters to you, why care whether I or others think he seems to be considered sexless or not?

  • Funnily enough there was this poll done over a month ago which revealed that Brosnan was the most “desired” of all the Bond actors with Connery coming in second and Craig third.

I don’t have an answer for who the “sexiest” Bond is but I also wouldn’t go so far as to say that Brosnan is “sexless” when compared to Connery and Craig. If anything his looks would probably put him at an advantage with women when compared to the other Bond actors.

Potential Bond actor, Sope Dirisu will next be seen in the Apple TV series, The Gorge.
Starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor Joy.
Could be a good bit of exposure in what looks like an action drama.

Women loved Brosnan. He brought a lot of female fans to the franchise.

Topless scenes in all three films? That would keep the ladies invested.

    Fair enough, didn't see that.

I'd say Brosnan aging as well as he has might add an extra dimension to how people might look back on him when they're voting for those things. The man oozes class and age has given him a more rugged facial attraction. He was always a handsome fella, obviously, but I can see a scenario where he might be even more appealing now than he was then.

All this discussion is done with hindsight from our current perspective. The nineties were a completely different era, and beeing 'sexy' for men (and women) was definately different. Beeing a bit of a dandy was seen as sexy. Rugged looks were definately 'out' at the time. Just take a look at, i.e. Take That. Boybands were all the rage and so were 'boyish charms', to cite a certain M.
I'm still ashamed of the hair I had then ;-)

I think a lot of sex appeal with actors comes from how they carry themselves on and off screen. Obviously all the Bond actors have been handsome men, but I wouldn't call Connery or Craig 'conventionally' good looking in their primes (or at the very least they had their 'imperfections' if you can even call them that. I'm sure without both men's charisma and 'certain something' about them the overall impression wouldn't be the same).

Again, I'm sure some of us here will point out things about the next Bond actor's appearance. They have big ears, they look too boyish, they're too craggy perhaps etc. It really doesn't matter specifically when compared to the bigger picture.

So what you’re saying is that as long as the next guy doesn’t look Danny Devito everything will be alright?

I had a co-worker who claimed her weird crush was on Danny DeVito, haha. So maybe it is about the attitude above the looks.

I think most people would regard him as very masculine handsome. A rare face type. I don't regard the likes of Cavill and Taylor-Johnson as masculine handsome as prime era Connery but it's a subjective opinion.

Oh he was a good looking guy no doubt, like I said. But he does have quite bushy eyebrows, his hair was thinning quite noticeably, and he had (in the words of someone I know) a 'sort of duck's mouth and nose'... which I can sort of see.

But if they're imperfections (and I wouldn't necessarily call them that - but he did have a very distinctive face as you said) then it really doesn't matter because Connery carried himself so well and had that charisma and natural sexuality. It's not something every actor naturally has. But I think it was a big part of his appeal.

That reminds me of the Banned Criteron Commentary tracks where Terence Young mentioned he had to constantly say “Sean, Frog!” whenever Connery made a certain expression.
