As bad as Richard Donner's firing was, losing Marlon Brando as Jor-El in Superman 2 was just as bad. Not that Susannah York was bad in any way, but you know that more care went into the emotional messages with Donner. And even Brando was just doing it for the paycheck, he is still great to watch. In particular in the first Fortress of Solitude scene.
I hope my Superman and Supergirl screenplays can be this great. If they get made of course! You'll see many Superman/Girl characters that haven't been done yet. In particular villains!
There is so much potential with live axtion Superman its unreal.

I would have loved if Donner actually got to finish II back in 1980, and we could see what he would have come up with as far as a proper ending goes because there’s no way they would have stuck with Superman turning back time a second time.
Agreed- I think the ideal version of the film is 2/3rds Donner 1/3rd Lester.
I agree with you both. I'm just curious as to what Donner had in mind for a third movie under his leadership. I know Ilya Salkind wrote a treatment with Supergirl, Brainiac and Mr. Mxyzptlk. There was a lot of unfaithfulness to the comic (Supergirl being raised by Brainiac, her marrying either Brainiac or Superman). It's climax almost actually predicted Avengers Endgame in some ways! We did almost get Bizarro Superman, like in our Superman 3. It sounds like Donner wanted Brainiac for sure, with Tom Mankiewicz directing it. Apart of me sees Tanya Roberts as Supergirl. Alas, we got the feces that is our timeline's version of Superman 3.
I actually think there's a lot of potential in Superman 4. I think with more care, money, and added footage, it could actually be a decent movie. Some of the story ideas are great, actually.
As for a Superman Returns sequel, it sounds like Brainiac would have been the villain. With more action, with the kryptonite island as a plot device. Jason would have been Superman's son, with Brainiac attacking him. Mixed opinions on it, but it could make a great one-off graphic novel one day. Provided that Bryan Singer doesn't write it.
I wish sometimes that Superman Lives would have been made, by Tim Burton. At least we could have had Christopher Walken as Brainiac.
I'm happy that Superman Flyby wasn't made. If JJ Abrams played it too safe with Star Trek and Star Wars, Superman Flyby was WAY too different, from the myths of Superman. There's no middle ground with creative risks with JJ Abrams, lol.
As for a Man of Steel sequel, I just wouldn't want Zack Snyder to direct. As much as I liked MOS, there's only so much Zack Snyder that many can take. I'm glad he didn't mess up Metallo as he did with Doomsday. He kept saying the real Doomsday was out there, when he should just have used him in BVS! Instead of having Zod be more or less a villain again!
I have a couple of Superman screenplays partly written. New characters and new villains from the comics! You will see and learn some things about the characters that you haven't before!
Hopefully by this time next week, we will finally see a trailer for Superman 2025!
Interesting. Do you, by any chance, plan to bring them to the big screen in the future? Or is it just a passion project? Just asking.
After all, we see in SUPERMAN II the world that astronauts and cosmonauts are not only working together but are still visiting the moon! That kinda tells us how Superman’s world doesn’t necessarily reflect ours (though funnily Donner shot footage of Zod using a machine gun to shoot Nixon’s presidential portrait, which is wisely cut from both versions).
I would love to bring them to the big screen. Superman is one of my passions. It's a rare creative project that I would love to share with others. And have as much creative control, as possible. I just want as much faithfulness to my general stories and the comics, and in particular, the characters from those comics!
Denzel Washington should have been Superman in the 1990s. Everyone after Reeve has fallen short with me because they don't do the duality thing all that well--Cavill is always Cavill. But man, Denzel can project strength and integrity and all that and be handsome at the same time, but he can also be the schlubbiest-looking doofus around if you want it. He'd have been great.
Nah. I love Denzel, he's great, but he ain't too good for anything. He tends to elevate his material, and his material tends to need elevating. It's magic that way
During the production of The First Avenger, the Russo brothers changed the world that surrounded Steve Rogers, maintaining his original traits and building the character little by little, presenting us with his human side of and making him relatable to the audience.
Meanwhile, Zack Snyder, while trying to bring Superman to a more grounded and realistic world, assasinated his character, lowering him to our level; there is nothing throughout Man of Steel that helps us identify with him, we don't know what he likes to do, what makes him feel human, why he tries to be a hero.
In short, one showed the circumstances and qualities of the character while the other didn't, making the latter unimportant.
