I'm wondering how this novel managed to get past IFP's lawyers? Was it because it was only published in Canada where the literary copyright in Bond has expired or is there another reason?

Yes it's the Canada lane on those @Dragonpol.

@mtm I'm traveling to a location where at the very least I can purchase Kindle versions, I'll also be on the lookout for physical copies.

Oh I know of Iain McLaughlin; he's written quite a bit of Dr Who. Decent enough writer.

I see he did a short story collection too: For Queen and Country. I don't know why IFP don't do that.

That was part of my wishlist with the IFP survey. Fingers crossed that they listen to us!

Okay cool. I must say I would like a look at this one just because I know the writer is of a professional standard, unlike with most of these efforts. To be honest I think it's likely to be better than most of the Bensons, as I never thought he was really up to it.
I thought I might be able to find it through nefarious methods, but there's no sign of it anywhere that I can find.

James Bond Will Return in IFP Court Injunction.
  • Pro tip: If you reside in a country where you're not allowed to purchase one of these unauthorized Bond novels, you can change your billing address on Amazon to order them and then change it back.

So I recently enjoyed a week in Victoria (and Vancouver) British Columbia, Canada.

Mindful of the book opportunities, within Victoria I searched out used book stores seeking a copy of Licence Expired. Unsuccessfully.

Russell Books was pretty extensive and organized to collect Bond novels in one location. But the staff didn't recognize the targeted item. They did seem to enjoy listening to my story about public domain and its effects in Canada.

At Bastion Books Rare and Secondhand the nice man operating the store recognized what I was looking for. He'd possessed a copy at one time, described it as having one story carefully cut out of it. Described the stories and the book as good quality.

From that I expressed further interest in the book, even if it wasn't complete. And he politely further shared that he'd given that copy to an interested friend and no longer had it. The man did give good advice: that probably thrift shops were the best bet to locate a copy at this point.

Getting around on my last day in country, I tried some of that but didn't have time to properly go through what were unorganized sometimes large collections of donated books. Over time I may have a similar opportunity and give it more time.

Another place of note I visited was The Haunted Bookshop in Sidney, just north of Victoria Airport. The gentleman there was helpful, but suggested locations I'd already tried. He confirmed Bond novels were collected in an area, and I couldn't resist buying (a second) hardcover Hodder & Stoughton printing of John Gardner's Brokenclaw.

    Brokenclaw_%281st_Edition%2C_Hodder_%26_Stoughton%29.png

Restarting conversation with him, I mentioned the early part of the book actually takes place in nearby Victoria. It came back to him that he'd actually read the novel, and my further interest expressed for connections between Victoria and San Francisco triggered some detail. He confirmed shared history for the gold rush, arrival of an Asian workforce, and Chinatown enduring. History books representing Victoria and British Columbia around the late 1800s and some time after were printed in San Francisco, where the established resources were.

On Licence Expired, I live to buy another day and look forward to a future opportunity.

I’ve been to Victoria, very pleasant city.
I guess you probably need to buy these things from Amazon there.
I must admit it’s Firewalker which still interest me the most, still can’t find it.

On November 25th a new paperback was released by Kadokawa called Tiger Tanaka (part 1) by Keisuke Matsuoka. From the press release: "Japan's first full-fledged 007 sequel! A sequel to Ian Fleming's You Only Live Twice, this work resolves the mysteries and contradictions of the original. It also has the aspect of a modern history mystery set in Japan. James Bond, who has disappeared in Fukuoka, is pursued by Tiger Tanaka, the head of the public security, and his daughter Toran. This must-read epic thriller that has captured the attention of the whole world is here, depicting the entire mysterious six months of Bond's life in a suspenseful manner!"

Wow, I very much want this book.

On Topic: Not very creative, but I'd love for Horowitz to keep doing it. Although I suppose he isn't going to.

I also want this book. I know it's technically public domain, but I wonder if IFP will truly say anything about it, or buy it for their own publication rights. Maybe @Revelator can help explain the legal rights? I agree @RichardTheBruce I will see if I can get a copy of this, considered official Bond or not. Also, @NickTwentyTwo it would be interesting for Horowitz to come back, but I think he and IFP wanted change, in more ways than one. I still hope for Charles Cumming or Charlotte Philby.

It was reported in addition to Canada, the ability to publish new James Bond novels or stories includes Japan, New Zealand, South Africa and Thailand. That's under the public domain “life plus 50” rule of copyright duration.

My understanding is if you're "in country" you can purchase them. Seeking to purchase online it's expected a shipping address is to one of those countries that observes the public domain status.

I'm also seeing self-published materials on Amazon, so the status can become confusing.

    I may test the waters.

    TIGER TANAKA PART 1

    https://spyvibe.blogspot.com/2024/11/tiger-tanaka-part-1.html?m=1

But wait... there's more! Tiger Tanaka Continued will be released on December 24th. From the part 2 press release: "The sequel to The Man with the Golden Gun, this is the first Japanese 007 sequel novel and the finale of the series, James Bond's final adventure! Dr. No may still be alive -- the year is 1964, just before the first Tokyo Olympics. There have been a series of military aircraft crashes across the country. Tiger Tanaka, the head of the Public Security Bureau, asks MI6 in the UK to send Bond. This must-read international intelligent novel, incorporating many historical facts and the world situation of the time, is finally complete!" I've reached out to the publisher and to Ian Fleming Publications to see if the project was licensed. Perhaps the character is out of copyright in Japan? Curious to learn more. I will post something once I get more info.
The great artist Tony Stella made some amazing book covers for his own archive, which we won't see in print, sadly. You can see them on his Instagram.

    Tiger Tanaka, Matsuoka Keisuke, 2024.
    Chapter 1
    (page 7)
At the wharf where fishing boats are moored, rusty metal fittings and ropes sway in the wind, making a subtle creaking sound. Trucks are lined up waiting to unload fresh fish. Fishermen are busy inspecting their nets and preparing their fish baskets.

At dawn, cold, clear air flows into the wharf, carrying the scent of the sea. The silence before the sun shines over the port, and a thin mist drifts slowly over the sea.

As countless seabirds fly around, the sky begins to turn a pale pink. With low silhouetted mountains in the background, the wide coastal plains gradually come into view. Almost the entire area is covered in concrete.

The huge Wakkanai Port is a designated important port located in the northernmost part of the country. Many jetties stretch out over the sea. Fishing boats gather at only a few of them.

The Akizuki-class destroyer was anchored at the pier in the distance, illuminated by the lighthouse.

    (page 8)
I got into the driver's seat and immediately closed the door. The smell of whiskey hit my nose.

There was a naval and air Self-Defense Force detachment base.

The thing I was paying attention to was the ferry, Henenmaru No. 4, moored at a pier a few meters ahead. It had a capacity of 97 passengers and seven crew members. It was a steel ship, 27 meters long, 7.0 meters wide, 3.37 meters deep, and 159.70 gross tons. It could travel at a speed of 12 knots. The hull had peeling paint and copper.

The whistle rang out. It was already spring, but it was cold in this area. Even though I was wearing a suit and a thick coat, the cold air seeped right through to my skin. I could see the white-stained breath. As it got brighter around me, I started to think that I would be seen by others if I continued to stand outside.

Miyazawa Kunihiko, 32, returned to his second-generation Toyopet Crown parked at the pier. If he blended in with the trucks transporting fresh fish at a wharf reserved for fishing boats, he would likely look like someone from a related company. It would be unwise to approach the Fourth Soen Maru carelessly.

The large Australian in the back seat had a red face. He leaned forward over the seat, holding a bottle of Suntory Kaku. His greying, curly hair bespoke the image of a middle-aged man.

    (page 9)
Karan: "It's a tactic used by British spies during the war. It's fine if you're at a wharf where fish are landed. It disrupts the smell and the fishermen chase away the dogs."

This tells the story of the man. He's a big guy, his muscles sticking out in his suit, but his charming blue eyes and low nose barely reduce his threat.

Richard Lovelace Henderson, second secretary in the cultural section of the Australian Embassy, asked in heavily accented English. "Are you going out fishing? The passengers on the ferry won't walk this way. If you're not careful, they'll board your ship."

Miyazawa responded in English. "You can see a figure crossing the pier clearly from here."

"Why don't you get closer? You're worried about his eyes..."

"It's not people that we're worried about, it's dogs." Miyazawa said without turning around. "He might have stolen one of your belongings. He might even let a Doberman trained to your scent on the pier beforehand."

Henderson's face became serious. "Has that happened before?"

"...You guys are always so detail-oriented." Henderson leaned back in his seat. "Of course, if we had been thorough about that, we wouldn't have had a scandal like Tiger."
