Random tangent, but I always thought him and Dalton were quite similar in a few ways. The northern accent traces, that way of slightly shouting and going into the chest when they get angry, they even look a bit similar. Stewart, with a 'piece on: probably could have been a Bond.

A new name has been mentioned by online media.

    Stuart Martin.

From the Sun (article originally from The Daily Mail).

A SURPRISE name is now among the frontrunners for the role of James Bond after holding "serious talks" with bosses, according to reports.

Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have all been tipped to replace Daniel Craig as 007 - but Stuart Martin, 39, could be the surprise choice.

The hunt for Daniel Craig's successor has been years in the making.
It would bring the franchise full circle if he were to bag the role, becoming the first Scotsman to do so since Sean Connery said farewell in 1983's Never Say Never Again.

A source told the Mail: "Stuart is the name that has been discussed in Bond circles by those in the know.

"He is in serious contention. No-one will confirm this because Eon goes all out to deny and shy away from anything concerning casting, but it would be an amazing milestone to have a Scottish Bond again."

I think it's unlikely he's the hot new favourite but he may be on the list of actors Eon will consider. He is 39 so will be in his 40s by the time Bond 26 gets made so his age may work against him.

It seems as if the "Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be Bond" claim has faded, it's old news, so expect new actors to get the "in serious contention/a source told the Mail" treatment.

That’s quite a beard that man has. Hiding a weak chin no doubt.

I’m joking. He actually reminds me a bit of Richard Armitage or Gerard Butler. The article’s clearly nonsense but I can see how his name would come up. Not convinced we’re looking at the next Bond though.

Indeed! The Daily Mail/Sun articles about Stuart Martin are very similar to the Richard Madden articles from a few years ago.

TALK OF THE TOWN: Richard Madden’s future in BBC’s Bodyguard thrown into doubt as the show’s producers confirm the Scottish actor is in contention to play James Bond.

It is understood that Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has been in touch with Madden – and he even went as far as to do a shoot dressed as the suave hero for glossy magazine, GQ.

Madden has been described by Hollywood experts as ‘the perfect choice’ to become Bond.

A few days ago the Daily Mail ran a negative item about Aaron Taylor-Johnson's chances of becoming Bond.
Hollywood bigwigs are questioning if Aaron Taylor-Johnson has the ‘credentials’ to play James Bond after they were left shaken by the dismal response to his new action blockbuster.

The actor, 34, who has long had his name in the mix to replace Daniel Craig as the titular British spy, failed to grip audiences as the lead in Kraven the Hunter – a superhero spin-off about Spider-Man's enemy.

The box office figures have left many Hollywood honchos feeling ‘nervous’ about whether Taylor-Johnson has the ‘mainstream appeal’ to take on the lead in a franchise like Bond.

You see how the media use the Bond franchise to hype up actors then forget about them. It's kinda cynical. The search for the next Bond is prime click bait. It doesn't matter to the Mail or the Sun or whoever if it's accurate, if they claim an actor is in serious contention/about to be signed, it gets clicks. The Sun ran with Taylor-Johnson to be signed this week (!) despite the fact it was later revealed Eon has not moved forward with Bond 26 and at an alleged impasse with Amazon.

I am surprised the Daily Mail ran a negative article on Johnson so quickly. They didn't wait long! One month into 2025 and Taylor-Johnson is regarded as past it/not suitable. 🤭 From hot favourite to no thanks in less than a year.

Oh yes, he has been mentioned. I find him far too dependent on a beard for a jawline.

He's been mentioned before. If I can have B26 end of next year but the catch is he plays Bond then I'd take it. I think he looks a bit like a cross between Hugh Jackman and Brosnan in some photos.

It's like they copy/paste the same text and just change the actor's name.

Regarding ATJ, it seems being cast in a Marvel movie has done him more harm than anything else. IF the article is to be trusted at all.

Kraven wasnt the worst movie inspite of what the critics said… i enjoyed it but in watching it clear as day i saw ATJ’s bond in the film and he would very much be like Pierce Brosnan for better or worse which i dont think i would hate but i wont love it either

I think NTTD already did that. It even did it down to Zimmer's score and the film's dialogue...and it wasn't exactly well received, as the film was trying too hard to be OHMSS.

It's too late for that. It should have been done in the 90s.

    Now we have Casino Royale.

I came across these 4 videos this afternoon, I have no idea of their origins but I was wondering what you guys think? It appears like 2005 screentests/reads for Casino Royale for Henry Cavill, Sam Worthington, Rupert Friend and Antony Starr. It's interesting they're reading from Goldeneye

Judging by these, compared to others, it seems that some tests are very casual and designed to get a basic feel of how an actor would handle the role, while other tests are more elaborately staged.

Nice find! I think these are early ones (from what I understand they’ll have over a hundred or two of those auditions from various actors early into the process. It’s mainly to give an idea of what they’d do with the role. After that they whittle it down then we get to later screen tests with costumes etc).

It’s interesting seeing these. Worthington seems to be struggling (I remember reading that he couldn’t shake his Aussie accent and basically messed up his audition… yeah, he wasn’t wrong). He has his moments though and there’s some confidence shining through, but it’s the weakest of the lot in my opinion. Cavill’s isn't the most interesting either (a bit flat in places and I think he’s overdoing Bond’s ‘poker face’). I was actually impressed with Friend (a very gentlemanly take on Bond, but maybe not quite right for CR). Starr too (very confident).

Great find and good to see you @Jordo007
Cavill seems a bit flat, Worthington...well, let's just say I'm glad he didn't go any further.
Rupert Friend seems the standout of these. He's far more relaxed and confident in his test. Could've possibly made a good Bond.
Anthony Starr was also an interesting one, though not quite up to it perhaps.

As others have said, I love seeing actors testing for Bond. It's such a rarity to see, and I love seeing them say the iconic 'Bond. James Bond' line. For some it seems natural. For others it seems forced and almost a wink to the camera.

Yeah agreed, makes you realise how Brosnan nailed some of the gags in there which others seemed to miss. I think Cavill was the strongest to be fair, but not up to Brosnan’s standard; but then maybe not fair to compare as PB was on a set and being directed properly.

It's somewhat ironic that while CR shows a young Bond at the beginning of his career, that the actual youth of these actors may have worked against them.

MGW said, "We've tried looking at younger people in the past. But trying to visualize it doesn't work," he said. "Remember, Bond's already a veteran. He's had some experience. He's a person who has been through the wars, so to speak. He's probably been in the SAS or something."
  • edited February 6 Posts: 4,613
Yeah, it seems like they slowly wrote out the 20 something year old Bond aspect to CR. Personally I think they made the right choice going with Craig and depicting Bond as a seasoned professional rather than going younger or ‘Bond begins’. It adds legitimacy to the idea Bond has recently been promoted to 00 status.

Not to say a younger actor couldn’t work for Bond. But it’d have to be a particular film (not a ‘Bond begins’ type thing but more a creative angle). And of course the right actor.
