James Bond Book Club - Online Group Read of Fleming's work - Starts September 1st!

Hi Guys,

I'm putting together an online James Bond Book Club, where every 2 months, we'll read through one of the original Fleming books, then come together online to discuss and post our reviews while the stories are still fresh in our minds. I've put a little something together here, for you to find out more...

We're looking to start with Casino Royale for September/October, then move through the books in order after that.

As fellow literary Bond aficionados, I'd love it, if you'd join in the fun! Hopefully we can get a nice community going. Let me know if you have any questions!

    Already started, and will have a plethora of other material to read upon just the other novels. I must exclude myself I'm afraid.

    Ah that's a shame, would have been good to have you aboard!

    To anybody else who's interested, there's plenty of room for everyone and with one book every 2 months, it's not too much of a schedule to keep up.

    What a great idea! I'd love to join in. Thing is, I've sworn off Facebook since last November (highly recommended, by the way. My life got more enjoyable instantly). Perhaps I'll make an exception just for this. :-)

    I would've joined but sadly I don't have CR :(. I will probably join you when you will read/review other Bond novels :)

    You don't have a copy of CR?!?!!! We must remedy this situation immediately...there are copies on Amazon for 1 penny (plus £2.80 shipping), that's a bargain if ever I've seen one!

    Yes, count me in! I read all the novels but decades ago. And I love to read; I read daily, it is as necessary to me as breathing air. :) This is a good idea, thanks!

    Many members are alreardy in the process of reading other Fleming's books, but surely they are at least a handful of us who'd enjoy this group discussion, per book, in succession. I hope so.

    I am digging into a Marilyn Monroe biography right now, but my next Bond I'll read will likely be FRWL, which means skipping DAF. But I am most excited for FRWL, so that is what I may do. I am going to college in but days, and a lot of that time will be me reading, and I have dozens of classics to get through, like Tarzan, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Kidnapped, and Around the World in 80 Days, and of course some Sherlock Holmes just to name a few. I will likely read a Bond book in between them to get a break from the classics, and get a literary spy fix.

    Cool, there are definitely some good reads on your list there! I've been reading 'Night Soldiers' by Alan Furst, some great WW2 spy fiction to be had there.

    Great idea! However I don't have many of the books with me at the moment, just a few of the short stories. When I moved to Germany they stayed at my parents house. I'll try to catch some cheap editions so that I can join the group.

I at times write some spy fiction, and Alan has some great videos up on YouTube giving advice to writers on how to characterize your protagonists and antagonists, how you study a culture, and set the atmosphere. There are also a lot of great videos where he reads excerpts from his newest novels and takes questions. Cool stuff. I am a big spy fiction fan myself. I love Robert Ludlum's Bourne Identity (not so much the other two of the Bourne books), Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series, a little Le Carré, and some guy by the name of Ian Fleming. ;)

    You should read Graham Greene too, I think you'd like. I have to confess Our Man in Havana is probably my favourite spy novel of all times :\">

    I loved the book, what can I say. I rate the Bond books higher as a whole but I loved the story of how a vacuum cleaner seller becomes a spy!

    I was only just about to start the series again so you can add me in.

    I am really quite excited to read Casino Royale as it has been some time. I'll don a straw hat and if anyone cares to join me we'll have an explosive read!

    I'm nearly half-way through! Recently finished FRWL and took a break from Fleming to read Gardner's Licence To Kill novelisation (not good) and will be back to Dr No shortly. Don't really feel like starting again from scratch but will follow the group with interest (and maybe add some comments of my own).

    Ahhh that's a shame, I didn't catch you at the right time. Maybe if this thing keeps going we can read all of the Gardner's together :-P

    My order came in today, so I am reading CR this evening, first time in about 30 years. (Yes, you read that right ...) Lovely, atmospheric opening.
