Is SKYFALL the best Bond film ever? *POTENTIAL SPOILERS*

edited November 2012 in Skyfall Posts: 655
I have always been excited when a new bond film arrives, but I have never looked forward to a bond film as much as Skyfall. Actually, I have neve bene excited as much with any other film in the world. SKYFALL does look extreamly promosing, but will it deliver my expectations. What do you guys think. How excited are you for the film, and could it be the best bond film of all time. ?

I have probably been more excited in anticipation of seeing TSWLM (I was very young then and the newspapers were full of the underwater Lotus and the guy with the steel teeth), but adjusted to age and experience I think CR got me more excited than SF. The wait was so long, the series had ended on a campy low with DAD, and there was a new actor who had totally won me over in Layer Cake.

SF has greatness written all over it and I like what I've seen so far, but I am not going to praise it as the best Bond film ever before I have seen it. I think that praise should go to one of Connery's.

How do you analyse the 'best Bond film ever'?

    Is it..

    a) the one that captures Fleming's books the best (in which case I doubt any modern Bond film can do that)

    b) the best film from an artistic perspective (it has a chance I suppose)

    c) the film that captures all the ingrediants of a great Bond film ie guns, gadgets, girls, martinis, villains etc

    d) the one that satisfies hard core Bond fans the most

    e) the one that makes the most at the box office

Where do we start to discuss what is 'the best Bond film'?

  • In my point of view, certainly not e)

It's hard to analyse a Bond film as the best ever. I guess it's up to your own opinon. Which each one prefer :)

    A combination of a,b and c.
  • I am excited, as I am always with new Bond films and since I love the Craig movies and feel like they are heading in the right direction, I am really looking forward to it.

That said, I cool myself down regarding the anticipation. If you push your excitement too high, there is almost no other possibility than being dissapointed!
Besides, I am always careful with terms like "best Bond ever". I am avoiding spoilers about the movie and I will judge it when I see it.
There is really no point in thinking about where Skyfall will rank before seeing it.

But I am I excited? Of course! But I am also a bit worried! And that is great! My worry for them to screw it up prevents me of having too high expectations!
Overall though, I try to not think too much about it!

I understand where your coming from. I maby have gone to excited for it. but i still do have some worries. Like the gun barrel, and if the film will be how i imagine it.

For me, i feel the best bond film is if its got the best story line, best cast, and action sequences. If i find it the most exciting bond film ive seen, then i will class it as the best bond film. It does look an instant classic. Its got a great villian, bond girl, hopefuly the gun barrel, and its also gone one of the best directors to produce a bond film.

I have high hopes that it will be a classic and my favourite bond film of all time. It mgiht be my faovurite film of all time. Not long know to find out..

And that's fine! I am always kinda nervous before a new Bond...especially since DAD. Just go to the cinema with a clear mind and (hopefully) enjoy the movie!
Worst you can probably do is going to the cinema thinking: "This is it! This is going to be the best one".

As for the question what the best Bond is: The one I like/enjoy the most! And I admit, for me, there will never be THE best Bond! Granted, if forced, I would say FRWL but without a pause I would mention TSWLM, TLD, CR and maybe even TWINE.
After 50 years, we have seen so many styles of Bond, most of them which I enjoyed. Picking a winner is really difficult!

  • If this movie is anything less than great, will we all be disappointed?
  • I've said this time and time again, hyping it as the best Bond film ever will only make it a let down.

Just wait and judge it when it comes out. If you think it's the best Bond film ever, great, but if it's not the best but still good, you won't be disappointed.

I have said this many times before: If any film looks to top CR for me, it's Skyfall.

I totally agree. I do feel it will be the best bond film though, juding the trailers, videos, screens ect. I know when you look at a trailer and you think it look sgreat and it turns out bad. I dont feel this with Skyfall. I feel it does have something very special. I love everything about it. From the cast, locations, return of q, theme song, .. you get my drift..

It also looks the most stunning. It cinematography looks great. So if it turns out great and it also becomes the best looking bond film, then it will be my favourite. I will just have to hope and wait to see. Not long now.

I must admit. There is a mixture of exitement and worry with skyfall. Bond films are the only films that i care the most about.

I have seen FRWL & OHMSS in cinema (will see the last one fairly soon again) and so I can say with my hand on my heart that Skyfall will not be the best 007 bond ever.

However I do recognise that a certain generation sees everything in superlatives, whne they grow up they'll recognise youthfull high for what it is. Lack of oxygen in the brain and too much hormones. :D

It will probably be the best one in this generation/era since GE and CR. And probably the best one with Daniel Craig since CR. But the best of all the Bond movies? I will decide that when I see the movie, but highly doubt it will be the best Bond movie ever. But there is no doubt, its looking good so far...

Every new movie has the potential to be the greatest Bond movie ever. Everytime my excitement for SF gets too much, I dampen down my excitement. So, colour me cautiously excited.
  • edited October 2012 Posts: 31
SF has a lot of potential, largely due to its cast & crew--arguably the strongest ever assembled for a Bond film (first-ever Oscar-winning director, two Oscar-winning actors *plus* two multiple nominees, etc.) That said, until folks actually see it you can't really say where it will rank--though I doubt it will be seen in the long run as better than "classic" Bond (i.e., Connery & OHMSS). Like royale65, I have to keep dampening my excitement. ;)

Yay, time to generalize the youths of the world again, pretending that nobody under age 25 knows what the hell they are on about. 8-|

As others have said, let's wait and see. But I somehow doubt it.

  • I'm hoping it'll be up there with the best but lets not get too caried away before we've have even seen it. In a few weeks time there maybe a lot of happy campers on here or possibly instead an inquest into what went wrong.
  • It's hard to say without seeing it, but I really don't like the approach by some people that because certain films are classics (ie. FRWL, GF, etc.) that they can't be bested. From Russia With Love waas my favorite Bond film for a very, very, long time, but after seeing Casino Royale, it was replaced, not because it was new and shiny, but because it's just a better film, imo. Also there's no way of saying what is the "Best Bond Film Ever." I mean as far as reviews and IMDb/Rotten Tomatoes ratings, I wouldn't be surprised if Skyfall ended up taking the top spot, just with the cast and crew we've assembled. But there's no way of really saying which is the best one. Remember, SOMEBODY out there feels Die Another Day is the best Bond movie. I'll wait until Skyfall comes out before I start declaring things like "Best Bond Ever."
  • To be honest, before I actually saw the film, all the hype for QoS had me thinking it would shoot straight to the top of my list. I was wrong. It is something like 12th on my list.

I try not to think much of will I like Skyfall? All I know for sure is it looks like a damn good film. Will it be the best? Probably not, but it will be in my top 7 surely.

I know it is hard to hear the truth. ;)

But threads like this are kind of a nuisance as nobody has seen diddly yet but expect oscars, the best movie ever, best score best this and best that.

I would expect that after QoS folks would be more cautious. Mendes has made some decent movies but has yet to make a decent actioner, which is what a 007 movie is after all even if it is a genre in itself. And the trackrecord of decent directors doing an actioner in the 007 series has been proven not to be too lucky. Campbell being a 2nd rate director but a good maker of actioners has been proven the best director for the series the last 6 movies imho.

But whatever high expectations can only backfire as we have seen already with Adele's song. ;)

Well I'm not in the age group Saint Mark talking about, I'm 40 and I positively chomping at the bit for Skyfall but unlike him I've not been bitching about the Craig era since it began.

Being young isn't somehow a qualification for liking Craig's films, while I accept QOS was not the second coming I do have CR as my no. 2 with OHMSS at no. 1 and I started watching these films in 1977 with SWLM and now find a good few of the Rog films utterly embarrassing as well as the last 2 Connery's not much better.

So being young has nothing to do with it, I suggest those bitching about this era are not open to the series moving on and repositioning itself for the time we are now in and not living in the past thinking it's a time of double entendre's and double taking pigeons.

Everyone is going to have their opinion of what makes a great Bond films that is why we all have something for each of us but what gets me is the series has only produced 3 films like this and people think we should step back in the time machine and relive the golden days again, yes SF will have tips to the old as it's the 50th but it's still going to be a 21st century Bond like the type some here seem to dispise and I guarantee the usual suspects will be here after the initial release dates around the globe, complaining about it and saying it's just not Bond it's more like a Bourne film or Jack Bauer, just see if they don't

Daneil did say himself he wanted to create the best bond film he could, so if he has sucseeded,

I have a feeling it will be my favourite bond film. I love the cast, and everything about it more than any other film so far.

Shardlike I am fine with what you are suggesting and I am fine with Craig and I find that EON has done him no big favors so far with the flawed DAD-like ending and a miserable QoS that should have been a tour the force but turned out to be a product of a good director that lacked the skills to make even a decent actioner. (Foster is a good director imho). ANd I am all in favor of a all decent movie for Craig and he deserves one I feel even if I rate him as 007 lower than SC & RM. He deserves a 100% good movie simply because the series needs him for the future.
Like with the previous movie EON and Craig are all in the praising to heaven mode with the next one. With the last movie they have already backtracked on their words including Craig himself.

So I hope that Bond23 will be more than CR (better than QoS could be achieved by Uwe Boll :D ) but I have seen some highly anticipated movies this year that failed to woo me. And indeed I shall watch the 007 movie the first weekend (most probably before the weekend since I dislike my movie disturbed by the noise of undisciplined youths that are allowed to stay up late during the weekend.) with high hopes.

But it will have to be bloody amazing to beat the original ideas of mr Fleming over the plotchoices of P&W and some help.
  • @Shardlake You've changed your tune. Aren't you the one who said age does matter and that I only liked Brosnans era because I was younger than you?

Anyway, I think it's fine to get pumped for SF and it ill probably be pretty good. But Oscars, best Bond film ever, etc, why not just wait and see first?

Why don't we wait to watch the product and then decide wether we like it or not?
It's too soon to say it's the best or the worse.
We should wait, if not we could find ourself in the same situation as many critics saying that Craig wouldn't be a good Bond before watching Casino Royale.

That's exactly how I feel. Plus, if everyone pumps themselves up for this film, it will have to be absolute perfection for it to actually be 'good' in their eyes, because they're expecting too much.

That's right, there's way too much hype in this film right now. And we might feel it's rubbish what it's actually gold dust.
However, it's EON productions the one responsible for this hype with their countdown and videoblogs and controlled leaks.
