Bond misses David Arnold

Having just watched Skyfall, as good as it is, I can't help but feel it greatly misses the Arnold effect.
IMO Casino Royale was the best Bond score ever and Skyfall would have benefited immensely.
Although JNH has produced some excellent scores in the past, If he picks up an award for this, I will consider it movie politics. Rant over.

    Lol I never thoughts I'd agree with you on something but yes Arnold come back!

    There are scores and there are scores. Arnold is the latter ;-)

    It is just a matter of not enough knowledge about movie music otherwise somebody would not even say that. Calling Arnold superiour to the Barry music says a lot about taste, even Arnold would call this person crazy.

    Agreed. David Arnold himself would not accept anyone calling his music better than Barry's.

    DA had lots of time to create a classic soundtrack - he missed it every time. Even SC said his music was human waste and he's knows a thing a two about classic Bond soundtracks.

    Disagree. Generic and soulless for a lot of the film unfortunately. It didn't destroy the film but it rarely enhanced.

    The most amazing - although obvious - thing is that David Arnold's soundtracks Would never combine and fit in any other past Bond movies. Try to hear any action song from Casino Royale while seeing Goldeneye or TWINE. It just wouldn't be that good.

    I agree, Skyfall misses David Arnold, or any other soundtrack better than Newman's one. I already found Adele Song terrible. Newman's soundtrack does not succeed in giving a specific sound to the movie. We are lucky that the film is perfectly done, but a good music would have contribute to make the movie more homogeneous and give him more identity.

    Newman's score is not bad. It's just background music to the film (although it's not so bad during the Asian part). Bond deserves better ! A strong musical atmosphere is one of the key to the success of James Bond films. When the James Bond Theme was played during the film, I suddenly realised how important the gap was between Newman and its predecessors. It lacks personality and ambition. It's a pity really, because I really like the soundtracks he did for the other Mendes' films

    Newman is the better composer overall but he missed the mark this time, only really getting into high gear in a very small number of cues.

    Newmans score was just a bit forgettable. Not bad, but not great either.

    I'd take most of Arnolds stuff over it.

    I thought Newman's score hit the mark on so many levels.

    I'm very disappointed with Newman's score. Much of it is bombastic, crash-bang-wallop music. It's sounds like every other contemporary action score unfortunately. I've been a fan of his for many years and know he can do MUCH better than this. As can David Arnold, of course.

    David, If you are reading this, make a score as epic and breathtaking as your scores for Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day. That would bring an epic punch back into Bond Music. :)

    David's score for CR was he best work. He dropped the ball slightly on QOS but then he can only work with the quality of the film put in front of him.

    Newmans score just felt like incidental background music and didn't seem to fit the film. The scene with the 3 lynx helicopters and the cheesy take on the bond theme made me cringe. However the scene with bond,M and DB5 had a nice score

    I missed Arnold in Skyfall. It would have been nice to hear some of Arnold's Barry nods, which Newman failed to do in Skyfall.

    JNH (James Newton Howard ?) didn't write the score. It was Thomas Newman. And after watching the film I thought the music suited the film perfectly. Although I am sure that DA would have provided a very good score aswell...

    Newman's score is a success because it doesn't stand out and steal the show, it blends in very well with the images.

    Arnold does some quite nice Barry pastiche tracks but he is badly let down by his action scoring which is loud, aimless and dull. He also fails to give each film an individual voice. His music is interchangable from film to film to film. Five films is enough. Time to move on.

    I love most of his Bond-soundtracks. Seeing that he couldn't work on Skyfall as he was busy for the olympics, I have good hope he'll be back.

    Not that the music in Skyfall bothered me, but it was a bit "non Bond-spy thriller"-like.
