  • James Bond jumping on the Komodo Dragon seems a clear reference to Live and Let Die

It was Mendes' and Craig's first Bond film and they still have a soft spot for it. It's a reference alright.
  • "Dont touch your ear" In the Macau casino, clear reference to CR :)

Sevarin saying, "nice to have met you Mr Bond" is the exact same line Count Lippy says in TB after tampering with the irigator.

Sevarin has a chinese marking on her, again much like Count Lippy.
  • Goldfinger - Ejector seat "You want to argue the whole way?"
GoldenEye - "Exploding pens? We do not make them anymore"

Well overall i am glad they were not in ya face type winks and nods! The DB5 is an exception as it is such an overwhelming part of Bond. So i am happy with what they did. :-bd

After the pic thread got derailed, I decided to make this. This is a thread talking about past Bond references in SF, and if you think there are any. You shoud watch the trailer before entering this thread, warning you now.

Here are some from the trailer, thanks to @FromCanadaWithLove and @JWESTBROOK

Bond being issued PPK - Dr. No
Palm reading gun - Licence to Kill
"Be careful of what you wish for" - Quantum of Solace (Greene says the same line)

In the art gallery there is a painting of a rearing horse like the one in M's office (MR)- minus the wrist dart of course.

At Skyfall, Kincade sets up a mirror and Silva's men shoot it and he comes behind them. Reference to Goldfinger.
  • Might have been mentioned already but the scotch that Silva offers Bond is 50 years old. Nice reference to the age of the series.

Much better than the horrid "here's your new watch. I believe this will be your 20th" from DAD. Shudder
  • There is also a part of the movie where Bond turned over the shrapnel (where he got during his encounter with Patrice in Istanbul) to the analysts (probably in Q Branch). He said: "...For Your Eyes Only..."

Actually he says "for her eyes only" to Tanner if my memory serves me correct ;)

DAD: Bond tells Mirander to put her back into it as they kiss
SF: Q tells Bond to put his back into it as Bond tries to open the door in the tube

DAF: Bond stands on top of the lift to get to the top of the White house
SF: Bond hangs from the bottom of the lift to get to the top of the building to dispatch Patrice.

Could the whole exposition of Silva's character be a reference to a Bond film that never was ie Dalton's unmade 3rd film? I seem to remember that that was supposed to be set during the handover of Hong Kong to the Chinese and Silva -real name Thiago Rodrigues- was an MI6 agent operating at this time and going rogue, possibly a plot device from the script?
  • Trace source of shrapnel like swallowed bullet MWTGG

It could be a reference to AVTAK, or a reference to the Bond/Vesper scene in CR. Or neither.

It put me more in mind of the steam room scene with Pat in TB.
  • The scene in which Bond runs from the explosion in the tunnel at Skyfall seemed like a direct re-tread of the same moment from Moonraker (but more like the book version rather than the film version).

This one is a subtle one, maybe even a coincidence: the holding cell where Silva is captured in by MI6 looks like the six sided Venini glass of Moonraker!

I really like your theory :)

I thought Bond jumping off that Dragon was similar to Live and Let Die and the jumping on the crocs. But That could just be really obscure.

Did anyone notice the Union Jack plastered along the sides of the Helicopters when they arrive at Silva's Island? That and the Union Jack at the end gave me vibes of a TSWLM reference.

I,m with you on that. Pretty neat reference as well.

I found another one: The DB5 having one last run with the gadgets then getting destroyed was a reference to Daltons never made 3rd film, I think. It was in the script apparently.

Also, the villian being an ex agent could be a GE reference. Silva talking about taking is cyanide when he was captured, DAD? (Brosnan talks about throwing his away years ago).

And people said there wouldn't be any references in SF.

I hate to say I told you so but.... :P

I think a lot of those "references" are more taken from the same source: the novels. MR, YOLT and TMWTGG especially, I think. And a lot of others are commonplaces in Bond movies, not references at all but simply occurences. Shower sex scenes are for instance fairly common.
  • and Silva's "1986-1997" reference?..I have plenty(!) of other suggestions; in 1986 I was in a french prison in order to take out a Targeted opposite, and got cought in the act..! M had to bail me out by exchanging me for another French Agent that was in London cought for the much same..!..and-as I said, I was in Gibraltar in 1997..!-Silva got Knifed in his back by?!..the abandoned village/Island was a reference to my presence in Beirut in 1993, were i was stationed for about 6 month's..
  • The mark on the side of the helicopter in Scotland was that of the Austrian Bundesheer..
Silva's Foulmouth'ed presence when he takes out his teeth?..is that of Jaw's?..
and so many other references hidden, as being the dedications they are..!
  • all those references are hidden in plain view, but only if You know it, it will be seen,
as the Dedication it is..all when perhaps The Sky Is falling In on You..!

"With pleasure" - like he says in DAD
But tbh, most of these aren't really references, we'll find "references" anywhere if we look for them.

Some people see references and homages where there aren't any. It's been said before and now it's proved by Sam Mendes himself.

At around 22:45 into this very interesting interview, Mendes is asked if the scorpion is a nod to Diamonds Are Forever. He doesn't even know there's a scorpion in Diamonds Are Forever!

So, revising that unreasonably big list of references, the only things that should be in it are:

    <ul>
    <li>"For her eyes only."</li>
    <li>"You must be joking."</li>
<li>"What did you expect, an exploding pen? We don't do that kind of things any more."</li>
<li>The DB5 with the licence plate and all the gadgets from Goldfinger, and the dialogue between Bond and M inside the car.</li>
    </ul>

I'm not sure if "Don't touch your ear" counts as a reference. It's just something Bond says because the last time someone did it he got in terrible trouble.

I may be forgetting a couple references right now, but that's the main ones.
  • You forgot the dragon stepping and Bonds gun being basically the same gadget Dalton had in LTK, but it's a pistol now not a rifle.
