I enjoy Cutthroat Island with his then wife Geena Davis.
  • I'm a big Renny Harlin fan but even I was disappointed of what he said about Timothy Dalton but at least he was being honest which is the last time I checked is not a crime and I'm sure he wasn't the only one that felt the same way about Timothy Dalton at that time. But it's good to know that EON stood their ground and stick up for Dalton which is rare nowadays.

Good to see Harlin didn't get the job (if he was really ever in the running); he'd surely have been all wrong for Bond. Although, of course, you never know, I suppose.

His instincts were right about Dalton, though... ;)

The directer of the first and third Die Hard movie did Thomas Crown Afair. Whyle i like the movie and in specialy because of the humor and Brosnan, TCA plot is to dificult to let the directer direct a Bond movie.

Whyle TCA grow on you with more views, whyle i think Die Hard 2 is better then the first one, i think Cliffhanger should is i think/hope be the reasen the Bond producer whant him for Bond 17. But i expect him earlier for Bond 18. The writer of Goldeneye Michael France did Cliffhanger as said earlier and because Renny did The Long Kiss Goodnight. His Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot but not a comedy action movie but a violence action movie . So i wil believe he have done Bond 18 with the return of Michael France if Renny is realy be considert. Mabey the choose of Roger Spottiswoode can have something to do with him. TMND have for a part a dificult story to understand in the first view but it be clear from the documentry's there whant at more humor and not more violence. The Long Kiss Goodnight whas and stil be those days a R-rated (16+) movie. In general this movie and Die Hard 2 be Thrillers with not much humor and very slow.

Last year i saw 12 Rounds. In my opnion 24 meet Speed meets Die Hard 2 meets The Event. Who liked Die Hard 2 and always like to so Speed 2 can be entertaint for the 103 minutes it take. Missing the more depth and humor of those movies. Known people you should not expect in this movie or you must remember in Erica, the bitch from it later made (but earlier seen in The Netherlands then this movie) The Event. Also the lead actor having a litle bit of Marc Walhberg (Shooter).

Conclusion, i wil be believe Renny can have done Bond 18 (back in 1996) if it be more in the style of Goldeneye with the return of Michael France, the other writer of Goldeneye, the editor, cinematopgrapher (or the cinematographer of Cliffhanger) ) and production designer of Goldeneye (Stil there must seath to another Production designer model supervisor , because Derek Meddings died in 1996.)

But 2012, no. Not enough present experience and 12 Rounds is not good enough Bond aka Shooter or Speed is not how i like to see Bond his future. Michael France in my opnion i don't mind to see return as third writer. Hulk whas to long and Fantastic Four to short, but i like the story. Fantastic Four biggest problem be that is whas made to late, whyle it be the first comic of Stan Lee.

I'm glad too. He was right about Dalton would be made good Bond if he did Bond 17 in 1991. I'm also glad he isn't idiot like Quentin Tarantino who idiot for Bronson in Casino Royle I'm glad Martin Campbell Helm that. So what I wrote I meant on Quentin Tarantino

Let me get this straight ... he turned down a Bond film simply because it would have starred Dalton (who is arguably the closest in tone to Fleming's Bond) and yet went ahead and did "Cutthroat Island" with Geena Davis and Matthew Modine, followed by The Long Kiss Goodnight" also with Geena Davis?? If I'm correct, didn't they both sink at the box office upon release? I would have to have serious doubts about his ability to make cogent decisions about the abilities of actors based on his choice of action stars for those two films.

Well he was married to Geena Davis at the time, or a relationship. And The long Kiss Goodnight is in my book a fairly decent actioner as is Cutthroat Island.

He did not like the actor playing 007, big deal. EON wanted TD and he didn't so they parted ways, which is the way adults handle it when they don't agree with eachother.

The fact that he chose to tell this story should be added to the many possible choices EON could have made. Another one for the 007 history books.
  • Harlin gave us some very good outings with Die Hard II, Deep Blue Sea and Cliffhanger for example, the man has had a few duds to his name but knows how to put together a fine adventure as we have seen. All water under the bridge now but in retrospect I was happy enough with Campbell doing the Goldeneye release. I don't think Harlin would of been an improvement if he had got his hands on it, if only he had been called up for Die Another Day, even Mickey Mouse would have done a better job of it than Tamahori's direction some would feel
  • I find it difficult to understand how a mediocre director like Renny Harlin who directed Cliffhanger, could have been approached to do Golden Eye. It was to our advantage that he didn't but his passing comments on Timothy Dalton not quite being Bond sounded like he didn't get Bond. Dalton brought in a Bond image quite close to Ian Fleming's book character, representing a harder edged and more strategic Bond.

I personally think that Daniel Craig has done a better job with Golden Eye (which came out as a recent computer game]. This version sheds off some of the clichés that were brought in the 1995 film. Personally, I don't think of Renny to be much of an influential celebrity, nevertheless Bond did change in 1995 which had quite a marmite effect on the audience.

He is so far up his ass it defies belief. Does he think he is Ridley Scott or Spielberg?

F U Harlin! He looks like Quantum's Mr White!:)

He is too opiniated and would not have been easy for Eon to work with. He and Dalton would have clashed anyway. Dalton would not have taken sh*t from him and neither would Eon.

And Cutthroat Island is hardly Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Good on Eon for having integrity and showing him the door. I think he sounds sour because even after they recast, he was not considered. So that speaks volumes.

Dalton was a great Bond and his potential was untapped. I prefer Dalton to Bruce Willis any day or Stallone. Dalton would have made his work cut out as a director because he is challenging.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mike Hodges direct a Bond film, he did a fantastic Job with the movie, "I'll sleep when I'm dead" , starring Clive Owen. This movie alone shows many Bondian moments within Clive Owen's character, "Will". I highly suggest this film to all you guys, its a dark but suspenseful movie. It convinced me that Clive Owen could have been a great Bond, but none the less I am very happy with Craig.

Clive Owen would make a great Bond! I saw him in a Guy Richie directed Madonna video for BMW and he has the right dryness to play the character. And he looks like Dalton which makes me favour him. He was great in Shoot 'Em Up and is a cool dude!

Dear Eon, please keep him in mind. I will camp outside the cinema the night before if you make Bond with him!

He will be too old when Craig leaves the franchise.

Clive Owen? Too old, let's move on from that old discussion shall we!
  • Guy Ritchie would do a fine 007. A gangster scene, a pride in Britishness, a cool colour scheme and witty lines. His Holmes is better than Moffat's BBC version, IMHO, though overdoes the comedy.
Harlin would have given us a serviceable Bond film. Campbell is a good craftsman, but he works to the producer's direction. visionary he aint..if you hate harlin for being a hack, why love campbell so much?
Die Hard 2 is not great, neither is Cliffhanger, though both were influential on the Bond renaissance so it is a myth that Harlin would NOT have matched the 007 ethos! :)

In hindsight it is easy to judge Harlin, but at the time he was considered he was a pretty succesfull action director who should have been seriously considered if you run such a franchise like the 007 one. He did not like what Dalton did with the part and saw it different which in my view his opinion and as a possible employee of EON he should speak his mind instead of doing a job you dislike.

I do like quite a few of his actionmovies, DH2, a long kiss goodbye & Cliffhanger are both movies I have seen pretty often.

I enjoyed this film too. Just because a film flops at the box office , it doesn't necessarily mean it is a bad movie. In my opinion the second best pirate movie after POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl

  • love Campbell for Brosnan's and Craig's Bond debuts. GoldenEye and Casino Royale are the best Bond movies, with the exception of SkyFall, in the past 17 years. Wouldn't be surprised if Campbell is offered the gig again for the new Bond
