Especially after all he had to go through when he was set up by Le Chiffre to look like an MI6 traitor. He gets imprisoned, tortured, released into retirement and then rejoins Bond in the field, only to die - thanks to his colonel 'friend' in Bolivia. I felt bad for him and his death caught me by surprise.
Forgot all about that one, but I agree; I thought that death carried quite a punch, too.
As that was already being telegraphed throughout the whole movie, which was perhaps due to poor writing by the various screenwriters and/or director it did lose some impact.
That said I will miss her performance.
I would not count Vesper as a "sacrificial lamb". Her death was key to the narrative. A lamb is a throw away character that is there to keep the brutal realism intact with the films. Solange is the "lamb" for CR. IMHO...
So you're thinking of characters more along the lines of Ms. Fields in Quantum than really folks like Kerim (who's death was pretty central to moving that plot forward a bit, I thought)?
Saunders
Bonds anger at his purposeless death blew the screen away.
Mathis for surprise and for the girls I always thought Andrea's was quite sad. She had a miserable couple of years with Scaramanga and didn't escape him in the end despite all the effort she put in.
I am beginning to think those who think this don't know a good script from a bad script.
I thought of Saunders, too. Just as he really becomes a likeable character he gets the chop.
I guess that death doesn't really fit the OP's criteria, though.
Well the script of SF is a decent script, neither good or bad. It has its moments but it also lacks some smartness occasionaly. M's impending death was not a great surprise for anybody, even my wife who is no 007 fan by any measure mentioned pretty early on in the movie that it was pretty obvious who was going to die. Only Severins came as a surprise, not her demise but the way it happened.
Tracy was sad but not suprising. Mainly because I'd seen films after OHMSS where he didn't have a wife and I knew he wasn't going to retire.
Most suprising for me were Zukofsky, Kerim Saunders and Mathis.
M's is also pretty epic, but might all under the same category.
Otherwise, Kerim for sure. A great character (and great performance) whom you grow to love as the story progresses.
Other honorable mentions would be Mathis and Aki.
Sharky in LTK. 'Complements of Sharky,' was satisfying.
Fields in QoS. The description of how she died made it very harsh.
Kerim in FRWL
Tracy in OHMSS
Lisl in FYEO
Vesper in CR
Mathis in QOS
Severine in SF
M in SF
Same goes for Achille Aubergine, who would have made a great team with Moore in AVTAK. Oh well, another missed opportunity...

I'm sure a lot of fans will want to strangle me for saying this, but I'm actually kind of happy that M is gone and we're headed in a new direction. Judi Dench is a wonderful actress and her contribution to the Bond series was huge. But did anyone get tired of the banter between her and Craig in both CR and QOS? I got so sick of hearing her use the word TRUST. "This is about trust." "I need to know I can trust you." "He's my agent and I trust him." BLAH BLAH BLAH. Plus, this is the second film (TWINE being the first) in which the villain is exacting revenge on M.
Don't get me wrong, I felt a lump in my throat at the end of SF when she gasped her last breath, but I'm quite glad that things are changing at Mi6.
Am I the only one who feels this way???
I don't know but I can't see Tracy, Vesper o M as sacrificial lambs. They are real victims.
you are spot on. Judi will be missed but it was time to move on. I applaud Babs and Mikey for pushing the envelop with Craig films. they were so cautious and afraid to cut loose during the final 3 Brosnan films.
the shakeup at MI6 is a good thing. I look forward to seeing more of the new Q, Eve Moneypenny, and Gareth Mallory as the New M
I completely agree with you. It was sad when she died but at least we can finally move on from boring trust issues and M being a big part of the story.
