Spectre wish list

  • I've been thinking about this since the lights came up after Skyfall.

    1. The Gun Barrel - I'm putting this first to get it out of the way, since it really is the least important. Like most Bond fans, I get a little thrill each time I see the gun barrel sequence. Since the reboot series still keeps tradition but refuses to follow tradition for tradition's sake, we really haven't had a definitive gun barrel sequence for Daniel Craig yet. In Casino Royale, the gun barrel sequence was worked into the plot and the opening titles as Bond "earned" it. In Quantum of Solace, it was moved to the end as a surprise for the audience. When it appeared at the end of Skyfall, we'd already seen that trick before. Either stick the proper gun barrel at the beginning of the next movie, incorporate it into the movie's opening in an interesting way like Casino Royale did, or quit pretending to care about tradition and ditch it completely. Just don't make it an afterthought to tack on the end at the last second again.

    2. The Regulars - The rebooted series has introduced Bond's supporting characters in interesting ways, and has found good actors to play each part. Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter, Ben Whishaw as the young Q, Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner,
Naomie Harris as Miss Moneypenny, Ralph Fiennes as "M."
Even Tim Piggot-Smith's Foreign Secretary in [Quantum of Solace seems like he was intended to be a reoccuring role to serve as a foil to 007 and M the way Geoffrey Keen did in the Moore movies. Now that we've been introduced to each actor in the role, make sure we get those same actors back. And since they're all fine actors, give them some room for their unique takes on the roles. Not saying a huge amount of screen time needs to be given to them like Judi Dench in Skyfall, but they should all be treated as characters, not just plot devices.

    3. Gadgets - We have a new Q in the form of Ben Whishaw. He says Q-Branch doesn't really go in for exploding pens anymore. I don't want to see Bond dependent on crazy gadgets like the invisible car and other contraptions of the Brosnan days, but even Connery had a few choice toys. In this high-tech age, no reason Bond shouldn't at least get one or two fun things to play with each mission. A smart phone that houses a powerful explosive or a Bluetooth that can hear through walls, etc., etc.

    4. Blofeld - All of Bond's familiar allies are in place. Felix, Q, Tanner,
even a new Moneypenny and M
. The only character left to re-invent is Bond's arch-enemy, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, maybe this time as the head of Quantum, the organization from Craig's first two movies that was missing in Skyfall.

    5. A Happy Ending - Sure, Daniel Craig's Bond is dark and brooding. And, by all means, he should stay that way. Not every one of Fleming's novels ended with Bond getting the girl, and, in the interest of avoiding tradition just for tradition's sake, not every movie should end with the Bond girl moaning "Oh, James!" as the screen fades to black and the credits roll. Still, Bond is supposed to at least partially be wish fullfillment. So far,
since Craig took over the role, Solange, Vesper, and Severine bit the big one, and Camille survived but her relationship stayed completely chaste.
Seeing as even Fleming ended some of his novels with 007 getting the girl in the end, Bond can suffer and brood through the majority of the film, and, while the movie doesn't need to end with a cheesy Hollywood romance scene, it would be nice just once for the movie to end with Craig holding a living, breathing sex goddess in his arms instead of a corpse.

My biggest Bond 24 wish is for Blofeld and Spectre to stay in the 1960's

Seriously let Quantum and it's currently unknown head thrive.

Q and Moneypenny are one thing but seriously Blofeld?

He's been done to death and pretty much failed to capture Fleming's image and worst of all created Dr. Evil. reusing him could either make or break the franchise.

@Murdock: I agree on Blofeld non-returning. Let Quantum die or come back in a few films. IMOO
  • I'd love Quantum to return. (as you can probably tell from my name)

My dream would be a scene with DC chasing a Quantum agent across the rooftop of the Sydney Opera House.

This was already used in Casino Royale (2006) except spoken by Mathis.
It's a good idea but they'd have to get the mask right. Can't be too superheroey.

Yea, I was thinking something white. Like this:

villian who plays chess and perhaps a climax like this would be really cool in Bond 24

^^ I just want another classy villain.

    I was watching this video:

And half way through this guy has self lighting cigarettes.

I thought it'd be a funny moment if Q is talking to Bond and just casually pulls out a cigarette and it lights itself.

True, but then there'd be no need for a genuine Felix lighter- and we can't have that. ;)

Age is no guarantee of efficiency.. out with the old, in with the new.

I would like Bond 24 to be a suspense thriller where Bond is being tracked and guided by as super spy(Red Grant type) working for Quantum to a secret lair where he needs to go through a obstacle course of death. LOL. Directed by David Fincher with a title to do with shadow. Shadow Man or Man in the Shadow.
  • Sam Mendes
    Thomas Newman

    Definitely NOT David Arnold.

Agree 100% with this. Blofeld was awesome but its time to move on.

I 100% disagree with both of you. Bond 24 is the perfect time for Blofeld to return and I'll be quite cross if he doesn't frankly...

    Bond 24 wish-list:

    Cast:
    - All returning characters back in full action. M, Q, Moneypenny, Tanner, Felix, the full lot. Doesn't matter the screen time, just bring them back
    - A female villain. Weather it be a Helen Mirren type mastermind or your traditional femme fatale, I long for Craig to meet his Fiona Volpe.
    - A memorable henchmen. Patrice was serviceable, but henchmen in the Bond world has been severely lacking since Dario in 1989. Multiple films in the franchise have shown that a popular villain and a popular henchmen may co-exsist in the same film, and Silva's recent "eccentric" appearance means that a Jaws/Oddjob type apparel is not out of the picture.

    Crew:
    - Sam Mendes returning. If not, a equally (or more) talented director who a) loves the Bond films/books and will adjust his style to the series, b) has familiar traits in writing interesting, complex stories, and c) not rely everything on CGI
    - Roger Deakins (or the equivalent of a more talented cinematographer) returning.
    - The Bairds returning.
    - A really, really good composer. Some examples: Newman, Howard Shore, Alan Silversti, Alberto Iglesias, Clint Mansell, etc.
    - A script by Peter Morgan and John Logan. I am fascinated by what part of the movie was based of off Morgan's hook back in 2010's pre-production, and I really hope he pulls out a full-fledged story in the future.
    - Daniel Kleinman as title sequence/gunbarrel designer. C'mon now.

    Setting/Action:
    - Film be set in locations never previously been shot before (Among them: South Africa, New Zealand, The Middle East) along with a location that hasn't been recently shown in the series (United States, Russia, Brazil, France)
    - A foot chase atop a metropolitan city + high rise buildings
    - A ski chase/ action scene located in a snow area
    - Stealthy movements by Bond + infiltration into a corporate base, meeting, etc.
    - Car escape/chase

    Story Elements:
    - Bond's frailty (and failure in the tests) questioned by Fiennes's M
    - Bond flirting with Moneypenny
    - Briefing from M and Q, with banter
    - All Bond Girl(s) surviving (seriously, not one Craig film...)
    - Main Villain dies in a dramatic death (or survive for the next film)
    - Bond suiting up in a stealth suit/reasonable disguise
    - Bond "blending in" to avoid detection
    - Bond being physically beaten up, captured, and then escaping by himself (with help of gadgets)
    - Actual spying being down. Actions include but not limited to: secretly recording a conversation, hacking into a computer personally, assassination (or prevention of it), implementing a tracker/bug, distracting the guards, etc. Think Tinker, Tailor and Mission: Impossible
    - Villain must have an ambitious, but achievable scheme. I.e. - they can take over the world, but their method has a successful chance of working.
    - Villain (and accompanying organization) likes to work in the shadows. This theme is continued throughout the Craig era.
    - Villain must be either sympathetic/human in nature or entirely evil/scary. No more mundane, boring villains like Dominic Greene or Le Chiffre. Make the audience either love/hate the villain entirely. Silva, IMO, was a perfect combination of both element.
    - Bond Girl is key to the plot and not simply brought into the plot.
    - If Bond Girl is a femme fatale, she seduces Bond
    - Bond's new apartment

    Thematic/Series Elements:
    - Gunbarrel at the beginning.
    - Restrained use of One liners
    - "Shaken, not stirred" + "Bond, James Bond"
    - Rock/Pop Title Song
    - Bond Girl in bed at the end, with Bond
    - Bottle of Bollinger
    - Memorable and innovative gadgets (like, a watch?)
    - No instance of interrogation/interrogation room.
    - Bond/Main Villain in a battle of wits
    - New Car, with fully automated weapons
    - Upgrade the PPK into the P99, or perhaps even use both (as explained by the Benson novels)
    - Bond's military background referenced
    - Firing range shown again
    - Bond speaking other languages
  • Bond 24 wish list -
    a) Quantum/Spectre and Blofeld
    b) An Aston Martin
    c) A theme song as good as Goldfinger/Skyfall
    d) a good, strong plot
    that's about it

Bond speaking other languages is lacking since 2002 (some spanish words, understanding of German). Fact, and so long. It's a great idea that should come back. Thanks to them a spy's communication is more credible, if you see what I mean. It isn't anyone's cup of thee to talk those. Even more in the opposite side of villains.

  • My top 5 Bond 24 wishes

    1) An excellent story
    2) Good development of M, Q and
    Moneypenny
    3) Gunbarrel at the beginning
    4) Another great theme song!
    5) The return of Quantum and Blofeld!
  • 1. Prefer a Fleming title...but something Fleming-esque would be OK too - I think it's time for Risico though
    2. A big action PTS like TND or QoS
    3. Gunbarrel at the start (obviously)
    4. New locales...My (patent pending fan fiction takes Bond to Oporto, the Amalfi Coast, the Maldives, Moldova, Sint Maarten, Nepal, Rangoon, Zanzibar and Bangladesh - obviously they won't go all those places but some new ones would be good - I like the idea of Tokyo, AfPak would be good too, as would Macao - oh and a return to Brazil, but gritty Brazil (Max Payne 3) not the Brazil of Moonraker)
    5. New Gadgets - and most importantly a new Q Car - I know Aston Martin only made 77, but a 78th Aston Martin One-77 for Bond would be awesome! (I can't understand why it wasn't in Skyfall personally)
    6. Other new cars/new car options: Jaguar F-Type, Aston Martin Zagato, Aston Martin Virage or Vanquish, 1930's Bentley 4 1/2 Litre (going back to the books - no modern Bentley's they're so not Bond), a hot Ford Mustang (think Goldfinger/Thunderball/DaF)
    7. A few options for Bond girls - Maria Valverde, Christa Theret, Scarlett Johannsson, Marion Cotillard, Amber Heard, Kaya Scodelairo, Emma Stone, Tamsin Egerton - there are lots of other options, Bond should finish the film with one Bond girl -there should be two (at least - three max) in the film
  • oh and Quantum should still be the villains, but we don't want to see No.1 just yet - perhaps we get close like some of the Connery films but never actually see No.1.

Also 2nd all of karatemanchan's suggestions
  • Oh and another thing - on gadgets, smartphone should be a one stop C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) system and when plugged into the new Q-Car it should allow for Bond to utilise all allied satellite and drone networks, switching off GSP in certain areas, using spy satellites etc, actual car itself should only be lightly armed - I'm thinking perhaps 2 x RMK 30 (Rückstoßfreie Maschinenkanone 30; recoilless machine gun) in the front and some really nasty tire shredders, TND's wire cutter but in the wheel hubs and on steroids (unless you're Eon, or someone else has already thought of these Copyright :) ).

Personally, I want Sam Mendes to return. He was responsible for inserting all the elements into Skyfall that I enjoyed (e.g., the Shanghai and Macau sequences which were dictated by him to John Logan).

I also would love to see Ralph Fiennes return as M. I never cared for Judi Dench much.

I'm sure Fiennes has a multi-pic deal at this point. GB and a huge brassy "Surrender" type opening song, not a moody ballad. (tho I liked Adele's a lot.) How about May?

Can't imagine the DB5 coming back, either. PS what does PTS mean?
  • edited December 2012 Posts: 12,837
PTS means pre title sequence. The bit inbetween the gunbarrel (or not in the last few films) and the titles.
  • - Possibly have milla jovovitch as a bond girl

Firstly, I'd like to say you can edit your posts; you don't have to post multiple in a row.

Secondly, the Bugatti Veyron cost over $1 Million dollars and isn't subtle at all. Bond is supposed to be a spy, and there only being a few hundred Bugatti's out there makes him easy to find.

If the mission is a real investigation (60's-70's style), why not put "Bond smells a rat" back ? It was a very cool music moment ! And maybe modernize it.
