Okay then, it wasn't just me.

He was cleaning off the blood that wouldn't erase itself from her hands, guys. It's deep stuff...It reflect's Vesper's own shock at seeing someone get killed right in front of her eyes and what the man she was falling in love with was capable of. She questions his soul and if it can survive his work. :(

Seriously, effective in the moment, forgettable afterwards. The mark of manipulative writing. Not that it hasn't been present in other Bond movies...

    I like it...

    :-S

    Let me ask you:

What would you rather have, this or the stripped armor and little finger scene near the end?

    Yeah, I thought so. :P

  • I must confess that I'm a little surprised at some of the scenes that people find "heart-touching"...to me the true ones are rare, which is fine because then they're more powerful.

OHMSS has two of the greats, Bond's proposal and then his reaction to Tracy's death. The proposal was really quite unexpected, but the clear, calm way that it was delivered meant that it actually made sense. And Tracy's reaction - surprised and tentatively asking if he meant it - really put it over the top.

(I can also understand people being touched at Moneypenny and Bond's interaction at the wedding).

CR is the other big winner for me (funny how it's the two films with Bond suffering the loss of a love). As many people have mentioned, the shower scene was fantastic and showed the chivalry that Bond has deep down inside. And of course Bond's reaction to the failed CPR with Vesper - someone mentioned the several changes of emotion that Bond goes through and I couldn't do it any better justice than that.

I must also mention QoS - my girlfriend cried a river of tears when Mathis died.

Honestly, the bit that makes me cry is in TND. YEAH, THAT movie.
Bond kissing Paris goodbye, & Bond kissing Lin to give her air.

Colour me a hopeless romantic, yo.

I feel like nothing even comes close to Tracy's death in OHMSS, as far heart-touchingly memorable goes.

    My #1 is probably:
Bond running to save M during her recitation of Tennyson against Newman's powerful score. The scene signifies all that Bond is, and why still after 50 years nobody does it better.
  • My list, in no particular order:

    1) The obvious ones, Vesper and Tracy's death.
    2) Bond asking Tracy to marry him.
    3) M's recitation of Tennyson.
    4)M's death.
    5) THE SHOWER SCENE IN CR!!!!! :((
    6) The final scene in QoS.
    7) The bit in LTK when Felix tells Della about James being married a long time ago.
    8) James kissing Paris goodbye and then kissing Wai Lin to give her air.
    9) James visiting Tracy's grave (weird scene but it touches me anyway)
    10) Moneypenny and James' moment after he got married. :((
    11) Mathis's death.
    12) James comforting Camille with a hug when the place is on fire.
    13) James and Camille's kiss.
    14) The last scene in SF. YES, I CRIED.

    And that's it. I guess.

And a soupcon of guilt, no doubt.
  • I forgot about one! The scene in QoS where James is on the plane. Everything is Vesper in that moment, his drink, the photo he's looking at and the theme in the background. And then Mathis comes to talk to him. Gets me every single time.

QoS is a touching movie. :(

And it is extremely melancholic when Mathis asks Bond what he is drinking and he can't even bring himself to say "a Vesper". Poor James... :(

YES. Forgot about that part with him not naming the drink. A very good scene.

I'm TOTALLY there in CR with the scene with Vesper in the shower and Bond sitting down next to her and holding her. It's a great moment. But when he sucks her fingers....the moment is entirely lost. It becomes a ridiculously inappropriate seduction scene. No woman who has just gone through such a traumatic experience is gonna take solace from a killer (rescuer though he may be) sucking (what? I keep thinking...the African blood from?) her fingers. It doesn't seem chivalric or tender. It's creepy.

My wife and I both burst out laughing as soon as that happened. It's a very silly moment in an otherwise great movie.

I do find the scene where he tells M 'The bitch is dead' extremely poignant and chilling. Also heart rending I suppose, if you think about it. This is Bond shutting completely down. Turning off. Becoming 007.

Nothing approaches the moments in OHMSS for me, except maybe for Skyfall.
  • OHMSS is of course up there...maybe number 1. But what I realised watching OHMSS again. I don't feel sad for Bond losing her... I really can't buy as much into their relationship on screen as most of you can. I also don't think the scene with the proposal is handled well, there I said it.
What makes Tracy's death so powerful is really Rigg's great acting in the final scene. Her short monologue about finally having a good life, a future...or something along the lines.

Turns out, I am not so sad for James, I am sad for Tracy. She finally found luck and it was taken from her as soon as it began.

The other ones were all already mentioned though I might say, I watched Octopussy 2 days ago, and I was really surprised how much I pitied Vijay's death.

This is mine. It's the single most emotionally charged scene in the entire canon IMO. It's a wonderful bit of work from Craig, I absolutely bought every second of it. Personally I think it makes the 'M' death scene look comparatively weak (while still decent).

I found the end of OHMSS very moving but I never bought the relationship between Bond and Tracy as much as did between Bond and Vesper. This is mainly down to poor old George. I absolutely believe that Bond and Vesper are truly in love and her death is the only true moment across the series that gives me a lump in my throat.
  • See I'm the opposite, I never bought into Bond and Vesper like I did Bond and Tracy and Tracys death is the only death that actually makes me feel sad.

    from CR trailer:
    "You stripped it from me...
    whatever is left of me...
    whatever I am...
    I am yours"
  • When original Q bows out with his lovely farewell to PB. Lump in my throat moment.

When Pam reveals her shorter skirt to get to her gun. Lump in my trousers and I touched myself all night.

Would be for me too, except that 'Never let them see you bleed' line throws me off. I just don't like it.

It had pathos to it, especially when the great man passed away just after filming. When I watch it I become emotional.

See, I for example love Q's lines in his final scene. The whole "I always tried to teach you two things"-scene is wonderful and for me the best part in TWINE (Though I am one of those rare ones who really like the movie overall)

See I'm the opposite, I never bought into Bond and Vesper like I did Bond and Tracy and Tracys death is the only death that actually makes me feel sad.

That surprises me. I always felt the connection was there in the book but not necessarily in the film. It's probably because I'm not Lazenby's biggest fan, OHMSS is a near masterpeice but he's just too wooden. Great at action but his delivery is route 1. You never get any emotion in the eyes like you do with Craig, Lazenby seems to just glaze over. I also think Diana Rigg seems particularly motherly, but again, this might be due to her being a much more assured actor.

I thought Lazenby did a good job in OHMSS, especially in the final scene.

But it's not really Lazenby that makes me buy into it more, but the films themsevles. Despite the fact that Bond cheats on her a few times, I thought that OHMSS did a better job building up the relationship of Bond and Tracy and making me belive it.

With Vesper, they argued and flirted, then Bond comforted her after the stairwell fight, they both got captured, after the mission is over Bond decides he loves her, they have sex and she dies. I never really bought into it.

I am not saying the CR love story is perfectly done, but I bought it more than OHMSS.
It's funny because your criticism for CR is kinda mine for OHMSS :-)

I always felt it's like: He saves Tracy, sleeps with her, meets her father, because Bond saved her once and slept with her he offers him money to marry her, bond meets her, a short cheesy love montage, Tracy vanishes and Bond cheats on her, only turns up again in the right time to save him and suddenly Bond decides he loves her and proposes to her.
The one thing working greatly is Bond's anger at the end and the way he is hellbent to save Tracy, but that can be said of CR too.

That mixed with Lazenby's wooden acting ....it just does not work as well for me as for others. Though sadly that's my loss.

For me Craig and Green had the better chemistry also.

I agree with you 100%. I never felt anything when Vesper died, and quite frankly, I was a little glad.

I know Bond cheats on Tracy, but what I like is that he was spewing all that sentimental crap to sleep with the idiots up at Piz Gloria, and it worked, but then when he's back with Tracy, he realizes how different she is from all of the other girls and instead of using a line, is brutally honest. "I love you. Will you marry me?" Simple and meaningful. That's my Bond.

When Craig spews all that sentimental crap at Vesper, I was HOPING it was a line. That is not something Bond would say and it's one of my major gripes with Casino Royale. The romance was just so forced. The shower scene was laughable. Why suck on her fingers? He could've just held her hand or something. Was it supposed to be sad? Sexy? Who knows. I liked Vesper in the book and thought her death was tragic. In the film adaptation I was happy to get rid of her.

So back to the original topic, I think the most touching scenes are:
    1) Tracy's death
    2) Bond finding Della and Felix's bodies
    3) Chapel scene in Skyfall
    4) Bond holding Camille in the burning hotel
    5) Aki's death

That's all I can think of at the moment. CR doesn't make the list at all.
