  • He's in a 12-minute short called "Occasional, Strong" that is... interesting! Winning the lottery isn't always a good thing. :)

Love is the Devil is a amazing film (a bit art house) but Craig's performance is heartbreaking as a gay man from a working class background going downward on an addiction of drinks and drugs. He's also naked in it if thats you're thing lol.

Well, there are lots of ways to be naked or to show nakedness, and in Love Is The Devil it's as heartbreaking as the rest of it, really - in other words far from sexy - IMO, anyway. Of course, someone might be into sad sort of nakedness, too, the way you put it just might give people the wrong idea. ;)

He's of course naked in several of his movies (off the top of my head... *counts* ...7 at least... no, wait, 8... eh, 9... and I'm probably missing some since I haven't seen quite everything yet (though I should be getting almost there in a couple of weeks, phew). Btw, GL - am I far off with that number? :) ... He even got to take his clothes off in bleedin Lara Croft: The Tomb Raider, which surprised me. (Though if it wasn't for the test audience saying they thought there should be more of him in the movie that scene wouldn't be in it.) And then of course he's also half-naked in many of the rest of his films, too.

There's a mention on the CR commentary track about the stunt man who does all sorts of dangerous stunts having been terrified to be asked to be naked (for when the chair is kicked over)... just hilarious. Daniel is just cool about nakedness - be it his own body or that of another actor, male or female, he says himself - good for him, and obviously for the co-stars in those scenes.

In Defiance there were great moments of seeing him deliver a fine, nuanced performance, but something was missing in this film, that other films of Zwick have had. Unfortunately.

Well, I disagree. I think it's fabulous and it's my favourite of Zwick's films.

What about 'Sword of Honour' based on trilogy of books written by Evelyn Waugh taking place during the second world war? No one's mentioned it. I've seen it about five times and I think it contains one of his best roles. Very entertaining film/two-part miniseries. I recommend any Craig fan to take a look. There's drama, great supporting characters and occasional slapstick here and there.

    ^^ Yes, it's pretty good. :)

Thanks for The Shockers: The Visitor. Just watched it. (His character in it reminded me a bit about the creep he played in Love and Rage.)
How the heck had I missed that? *deeply embarrassed*

True, its flying under my personal radar for some reason, I can't even explain why. There are some real funny scenes in it, yes. Maybe I should watch it again. Thanks for mentioning.

Did anybody see Love and Rage? Its another one of those, where I am not sure, wether I like it or not. There also are some hilarious, very well acted scenes and te plot with him driving her into utter despair is interesting. He is really bad again. There are quite a few, where he is not badass, but bad LOL.

Sword of Honour is good but I can't watch if for some reason. I always want to slap DC'c character in the face for being such a good and honorable guy who takes all the shit that comes his way and still doesn't learn his lesson.

I'd like to see him do more TV after Bond, something with the BBC or HBO.

I agree! I had a great time at the cinema and was rather surprised that it's reception was so bad.
It was Indy and Bond against Aliens...as Cowboys! What's not there to like! :-)

But honestly, I thought it was a very entertaining movie. And Olivia Wilde didn't hurt the eyes either... ;-)

I watched The Shockers yesterday, brilliant stuff. Thanks for posting these @Germanlady.

That one was great fun (though I'm not sure it's supposed to be), I always remember the portable toillet scene.

I might be one of the few people who loved Cowboys and Aliens! I don't know what people were expecting, but I got what I wanted. It was a lot of fun, great acting by great actors (the best Ford in years) and a crazy story (I mean, it's about Cowboys and Aliens). What's not to like, indeed ;)

Certainly not known here for trashing anything about DC, I have to with this film. Only that I blame the script and therefore the writers. What on earth were they thinking? SF has plotholes? Try C&A. Nothing really makes sense. With all the talent involved, people who have been in the biz all their life and they agreed on this? i am still flubbergasted about the outcome of this movie and sorry for DC, because it didn't work out.
"I never wanted to be James Bond really, but I always dreamt of being a cowboy" BUT even he should have seen, that the script was shit.

Life is there to be lived and enjoyed, perhaps he did it just for the hell of it. Not all things need to be taken too seriously. Not much wrong with the film, it's just a few hours of pop corn fun the title says it all really.
  • I never understood all the bashing that C&A got. It wasn't a great film, but it was enjoyable. And as someone up above said, it had the best Ford performance in years. After years of sleepwalking through his roles, he was actually trying and played a bit of a character instead of just being "Harrison Ford".

Interesting to see the chemistry between Craig and Olivia Wilde as she was the runner-up for the role of Vesper in CR! Personally, I'm glad they chose Green; while Wilde has given some great performances I can't imagine her bring as much to the role as Green did.

That's right. Were some people expecting a "serious" film? I mean, it's a story about cowboys fighting aliens. I say they actually did a great job, considering how difficult it must be to mashup these 2 things. Still it was both a western AND a sci-fi film all the way till the end.
The amount of talent involved in the film, however, was amazing. The cast was top notch and they all did a great job with what they had. Was the story crazy? Yes, but they all took their jobs very seriously.

Weird, crazy bit of a film. Surprising that he did it between Copenhagen and The Mother in 2002. Seems a bit off at this point of his career.

A review I read a while back summed this film up perfectly. It was along the lines of 'What could have been 'True Grit'-meets-'War of the Worlds' ends up closer to - 'Wild Wild West'.'

That was discussed right away when the film was announced and that - no - it wouldn't be like that. I never saw WWW, but I think, it might have gone that route unfortunately.
The concept was great, but the story was weak. No plausible explanations about the Why, How...but I am glad, some liked it. What Favreau did masterly was the promotional part. But then he didn't deliver.

Re Craig/Wilde chemistry - I think, there was none and normally DC has chemistry with a chair (even when he gets his balls beaten up :D )

@Tuulia - yes dark, weird stuff can be great to do in between just for the heck of it, but this was - dunno - meh IMO.

I think his performance in Our Friends In The North puts his Bond performances to shame. I think he's a good Bond but he's brilliant in that. If you're a fan of the guy then watch it.

I've been watching the 7th series of Doctor Who recently (didn't bother when it was on TV because series 6 confused me and really put me off) and they did a much, much, much better job of the Cowboys and Aliens scenario than the movie of the same name did.

Nice to have the appreciation of your fellow genre stars.

And Daniel Craig is a pretty tough guy. He reinvented that whole genre. He made me start watching James Bond movies again. He's great."

He was great, until skyfall. He lost his edge in SF. He had way too many jokes and one liners. In Casino Royale he was absolutely phenomenal. None the less he has been a great asset to the Franchise and is keeping the series afloat.

Danny Dyer loves Skyfall and Mr. Craig. ;)
Interviews from the Evening Standards Awards

...and in case that disappears, the same interview is also here:

Another one with a better interviewer:

From 1:17 to 2:10 (Before that he also mentions that Skyfall blew him away and later praises Judi Dench.)

This started in another thread and I'd like to put it up for discussion.
Is there any noticeable trace of Bond in his Blomkvist?

See, I watched the original Swedish Millennium films and just can't see Craig as Blomkvist as a result. Michael Nyqvist played him as a far more down to earth person. I read the books before the swedish films were made and Blomkvist has Daniel Craig written all over him, I pictured him while I was reading the books. The swedish films made a joke out of Blomkvist, completely changed him and also changed Lisbeth a lot. Suddenly Lisbeth was superwoman and Blomkvist was almost useless. Fincher's film, on the contraire, kept the characters true to the books.
    Germanlady wrote:
Right - saying he has to much action hero behaviour in this role only shows, this person hasn't seen the film, as it couldn't be further from the truth. DC's Blomkvist is as laid back as it gets and is played as a man, who runs from bullets and is a sissy with being hurt. Henever dominates any of the characters or is shown as more then an average man doing his job.

Some people forget or never knew, that he only an action hero for a relatively short time and his roots are in acting out the small man, the hounted man or just overall characters, who are as far removed from a hero as they can be.

I pictured Dan when I read the first two as well. Funnily enough, I read both TGTWDD and TGWPWF when the weather was getting frosty and cold. I feel it sets the mood better than anything else, and I may wait until next November to read TGWKTHN just for that feeling. Though, not likely!

Read what I wrote, not what you think I wrote:

    There's a difference.
    Germanlady wrote:

I read it exactly like that, only I can see NO baggage at all. Its in your mind, like...oh, he is JB, so he cannot possibly be a convincing Blomkvist. If you watch him in this role, there is no reminder of Bond whatsoever.
Yeah, Dan plays the quite light and non-combative Blomkvist well.

Interestingly, a lot of reviewers of the book said there was a lot of Bond and even Fleming (the man, not the author) in the character of Blomkvist!
In my opinion Craig played Blomkvist exactly like he is described in the book, it's amazing how well he got the character.

BTW, Germanlady, as seems to be her want, has posted up a small amount of the discussion and only the parts she wants people to read. The discussion was about preference. I PREFER Michael Nyqvist to Craig, regardless of the books (which I haven't read) and I pointed out that I see bond when I see Craig. She is entirely unable to accept that I'm not head over heels infatuated with Craig (I'm not, he looks like a potato) so has gone off on a long term rant as a result. This seems to be a common theme when she and the words "Daniel" and "Craig" are in close proximity.

Welcome to the club, Ali. Many see me like that and I have no problem with it, BUT if people care to actually read, what I say, they might find some sense behind it.

Like I said - in your world, almost every actor is restricted to one role. Sad new world.

BTW - starting to ridicule someone always shows, that someone is at a loss of words and arguments.

I wouldn't waste your breath mate. You've stumbled upon the Eagle's nest. 'If you do not like Herr Craig, you vill be shot!'
