Will we ever see Felix Leiter again?

edited April 2012 in Bond Movies Posts: 624
The character of Felix Leiter appears in 7 movies in the "original series" of the official Bond films:

1962- Dr. No (Jack Lord)
1964- Goldfinger (Cec Linder)
1965- Thunderball (Rik Van Nutter)
1971- Diamonds are Forever (Norman Burton)
1973- Live and Let Die (David Hedison)
1987- The Living Daylights (John Terry)
1989- Licence to Kill (David Hedison)

and as of Skyfall, 2 movies out of 3.

2006- Casino Royale (Jeffrey Wright)
2008- Quantum of Solace (Jeffrey Wright)

Now, if you notice, there is a massive gap with an unexplained absence of Felix from 1974-1985 and again 1995-2002.

Is Skyfall the beginning of a string of Bond films without Felix? If you don't think it is, who should play Felix? I'd prefer having Jeffrey Wright continue for the sake of continuity.

I think Jeffrey Wright has done a solid job and I'd be happy to see him return.

The 89-06 absence is easily explained though - he'd been eaten by a shark.

Might have put him out of service though...

Jeffrey Wright is a great actor. I bet he'll be back.

@Getafix True, but they could have easily had Bond visit him for advice much like with Mathis in QoS (Not that I'm saying they needed to.)

If they stick with the tradition of Craig and his emotional story-lines, we could see some bromance issues with Bond / Felix next.

    Of course he'll return. Duh.
  • Personally, I was a little disappointed when I found out that Jeffrey Wright was not on the cast list for Skyfall. I think he's an excellent actor and would personally love to have him continue. He has great chemistry with Craig, and the cynical sarcasm he adds to the portrayal is refreshing.

"Felix, I never thought I'd find someone to spend the rest of my life with, especially after Vesper. Felix, will you marry me?"

It could end with a civil ceremony with M as the 'vicar' and Q as maid of honour.

And Moneypenny sad AGAIN about Bond's matrimony. That is actually a really sad scene though, no joke. Someone needs to make fan fiction where they get together, for real.

You only have to watch DAD for a bit of that - eugh!

I think that Felix will appear in SkyFall for the most part, considering that he's been in CR and QoS, and it'll most likely be Jeffrey Wright because CR and QoS have sort of established a sense of continuity. Now, that could have ended because QoS's ending resolved the entire Vesper situation, but not Quantum and Mr. White! So I'm thinking that Jeff will return as Felix when considering that he and Craig have established a good, lasting Bond/Felix friendship.

^He's not in Skyfall.. unless there is a post-credit sequence.. which there isn't. He's not on the call sheets or the official cast list.

I'm not an expert on film casts and such, so just asking, does that basically mean he's probably not in SkyFall?
  • Jeffrey Wright nor the character of Felix Leiter will be in Skyfall.

He's not. Factually, there is no evidence he's involved.

Also, from what we know from the story and locations (which is alot), America is not involved, so there wouldn't be a CIA agent involved.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Sorry about that, your opening post made me think that his character was undecided for SF or something like that.

It doesn't bother me really whether Leiter appears in any Bond release or otherwise, not really a pivotal character for me and sometimes goes unnoticed, right off the bat I wasn't fussed if Wright or Leiter returned or not for Bond XXIII, not really a character I look out for in James Bond

My favorite one could well be Terry from Daylights, we only see him briefly, but I thought worked very well with Dalton. I watched LALD recently, and actually the 1973 David Hedison is a little irritating to watch sometimes, but the 1989 Hedison on his Leiter return in License to Kill, I don't really have a problem with, no such complaints as in his debut for Leiter, it's strange but that's just how I feel about it
  • Now that the retro adventure has been completed where the character can be completely normal, if they want to really do Leiter right and give us some continuity, then Leiter should have a pronounced limp since LTK was the last time we saw him.

I also hope that Jeffrey Wright returns, ideally in the next movie along with Quantum! As he is also on their case!

I would like to see Jeffrey Wright return so long as its fits the story and also to keep some continuity with the character
  • I think a younger maybe more aggressive Felix Lighter would be good like

Joseph Gordon-Levitt,Cillian Murphy or even Josh Brolin

I am sick of Wright trying to out-cool Bond. Chris Tuckers or bust.

Then it's bust for you, because Wright has already been given a time frame well in advance by EON when he'll be needed to reprise the role. So unless he decides not to be Leiter before then, he'll be back.

He was asked about it on some American radio show i believe? The clip is somewhere on this forum? He is just too good in the role for him and the charactor to net be used again!

Correct. The clip is here somewhere. Wright is doing his usual excellent job in the current season of Boardwalk Empire, next week he's stepping up his villainous game with Chalky and it looks like a must see episode :)
