Tanner is a Fleming character who has never really had his own identity in the films. Kinnear could frankly have been playing 'second penpusher' for all the presence he commands on screen. I disagree and think if they want to make him a recurring character like Moneypenny and Q, then they have to make him slightly intereting/appealing.

And there are more movies to come when this can be done without the necessity of a recast. In fact, keeping Kinnear will help establish the character.

Yes, but what does Kinnear bring to the role, apart from a bald head and a pot belly? The genius of Lois Maxwell and Desmond L was that they made so much of very brief scenes. They had screen presence and created memorable loveable characters from snippets of dialogue and brief moments on screen. Admitedly the writing used to be infinitely better in the Maibaum era, but even so, I don't understand why you'd want someone like Kinnear in a Bond movie.

We're supposed to believe Tanner is Bond's only friend, yet the films convey none of this. Sack Kinnear, I say. Bring in someone else!

Kinnear just bores me. He's basically there as Basil Exposition off Austin Powers, he turns up and talks about the plot to move the story along. Flemings character wouldn't have hid behind a desk during the courtroom shootout and Tanner doesn't seem to be mates with Bond at all.

The guy who played Tanner in GE had less screentime but I thought he was more memorable and entertaining than Kinnear in all his movies. Robinson (essentially the same as Kinnear, just there as the exposition man) seemed a bit more intresting too imo (and when confronted with a combat situation he didn't cower in fear).

I wouldn't mind a recast, in fact I'd be happy with it.

Okay, what doesn't he bring that a previous Tanner actor brought and who could do what he is unable to do and why?

You're right actually. I'd forgotten that Michael Kitchen was actually playing Tanner. He was a bit more memorable and seemed to have a bit of attitude. You can't imagine Bond bothering to spend time with someone like Kinnear's Tanner - he'd rather be by himself. And the Colin Salmond character was at least a bit more memorable - you noticed him rather than just zoning out like when Kinnear appears. I know Kinnear is has been in two films but can't actually remember anything he's said or done in either of them.

@Getafix See, you can find things to like in the Brosnan films. We'll make a fan out of you yet :P

I didn't realise Kitchen was playing Tanner until somebody on here pointed it out to me. Not sure how I'd missed that before, especially because M calls him Tanner. I like the bit where he's slagging off M to Bond (calls her the evil queen of numbers), and then she walks up behind him.

I agree Salmon was more memorable. In DAD he even teams up with Bond for a few seconds during the VR sequence (he gets shot almost instantly but at least he didn't just hide like Tanner in SF).

Ho ho ho. I'm probably one of the few (perhaps only one) who felt this, but SF brought back the distinct whiff of the Brosnan era for me. Something about the plot and nostalgia that Mendes was laying on pretty thick. In a funny way, I think I prefered Brosnan's films - they almost attained that 'so bad they're good status', whereas SF was just dull, IMO.

SF seemed like a mix of GE, TWINE and the YOLT/TMWTGG books to me

But I like the YOLT novel and the TMWTGG one, and unlike you I like the Brosnan era, so it didn't bother me at all.

Well, at least you tell it as it is! The DC fanboys won't like the insinuation that SF could have been a Brosnan movie though!
  • -Guy Ritchie to direct
-traditional style gunbarrel at the start
-Briefing by Fienne's M in the office just after the title sequence
-A classic instrumental theme tune, composed by Thomas Newman who should return to compose the film's score
-Although I'm a big fan of Wright as Leiter, I would love to see another type of ally like Tiger Tanaka style
-more elegance, mystery and espionage in the film
-a Fleming title, I can see a lot of potential from "Property of a Lady"
-hopefully Aston Martin can come up with a nicer car than the Vanquish type
-a great Bond girl, that doesn't get killed off so soon
-Craig in naval uniform would be good
-Title of the next film if 24/25 are to be linked? at the end of the credits

@YouknowMyname, they have confirmed that they won't be linking the 24th and 25th film.

Even if they are connected in some way, the days of getting the next film's title at the end of the current one are long gone. Time to give up hope of that happening.

my complete list and since 95% of the things I want many will not I am apologizeing right now

Title: The Hildebrand Rarity (the older I get the more i think as this being not only the most likely Fleming title but one that will come sooner rather then later)
Director: Tony Gilroy (I would accept David Fincher as a second Choice and Morrell as a third)
Writers: John Logan, Tony Gilroy, and David Goyer

    Cast

James bond- Daniel Craig (come on he is my favourite bond why wouldn't I want him back)
    M Ralph Fiennes
    Moneypenny Harris
    Q Ben Wishaw
Fidel Barbery (bond's contact in the style of Mathis) Gary Oldman (and no he isn't the villian just a contact)
Liz Krest (I say this name can be used without anyone thinking about Sanchez's henchman from Licence to Kill) Emma Stone (I want Craig to have an American bond girl so sue me)
    Philip Masters Kevin Spacey
Rhoda Llewellyn (no idea who could play her she is the kept wife of the villian Philip Masters and is in essence in my mind Julia Roberts without the baggage if Julia roberts so attractive older and classy anyone with an idea I would love to hear it.)
Von Hammerstien Mark Strong (Masters Henchman)

    Locations
    London U.K.
    Monte Carlo, France
    New York City New York
    Seychelles Islands (climax)

    Plot
After a tense pre titles sequence involving Bond and Mr White playing Chicken with Sniper Rifles (bond wins) M asks Bond to privatly look into the death of his close friend (borrowing from for your eyes only) Bond's investigations leads him to the mysterious Philip Masters from the glamerous world of Monte Carlo to the tough streets of New York City to an explosive conslusion on the Seychelles Islands.

    Thoughts?

A PTS that does not involve a chace, but a simple, brutal fist fight between Bond and a physically imposing adversary.

More like the PTS of TB, I mean in similar surroundings. Maybe not a French château, but something glamorous and classy. We had two chases in a row for the PTS, in fact before CR when was the last time the PTS did not involve a chase? I think it would be a nice variation to have something more sober, more contained.

    GoldenEye?
  • the whole film to be shot in 36mm film.

Roger to be back and claim that bleedin oscar he deserves. 12 times he's been nominated and nothing...it's disgusting....like my hairy bum.

Well, Bond does run away from the red army, I mean it is not quite a chase scene but it is certainly large scale and has elements of pursuit. I would like to see a good, simple, brutal hand to hand combat. Someone comes to kill Bond at the end of a mission, or Bond shows up to kill someone.

    Yeah,
I want the next movie to have a good fashioned chase not like the one in Skyfall,
Something like QOS with exotic cars getting heavily damaged and a good action score .
I mean a proper Aston Martin chase scene with a glamorous car such as the Vanquish

@Skyfail-I would rather have no chase at all, I mean not for the PTS. If they were really daring they would do like for FRWL and TMWTGG with a PTS that does not feature Bond, but not sure they would go that far.

Anyway, I would love something simple like a fist fight. In a claustrophobic environment.

    I don't mind either ways.
I wouldn't mind a PTS that has a fist fight but please for God's sake make it more intense than the fist fights in Skyfall.

But I would really want to see a car chase even in the middle of the movie. Something more glamorous.

I would really like to see a PTS which doesn't feature Bond. Maybe set up the bond girl, the villain, or the events which set up the narrative of the film.

Also, if they're going to do an IMAX release, like Skyfall, then it would be nice to have some proper shot-in-imax sequences, especially the bigger action sequences, but no to 3d.

Another trivial thing: a villain with a military title.

    1. I would like gunbarrel at the start.
    2. Bring back M giving 007 his mission in M's Office.
    3. I want a plot involving Diamond smuggling from Africa to India. For example Bond investigates the death of a British Minister in the Democratic Republic of Congo who is found with Blood Diamonds and a hotel reservation for a top class hotel in Surat. Bond discovers the Diamond smuggling is a ploy as the real threat is Blofeld, who plans to manipulate India's concerns of China's growing influence in the Indian Ocean. Blofeld plans to detonate a nuclear device in the Indian Ocean and causing both sides to blame each other. This would cause a war similar to the 1962 Sino-Indian War, that would drag Pakistan and the other Nuclear states into the situation. That would allow Blofeld's organization to cash in on falling stocks and shares and use the profits to build his organization and like shadows infiltrate every spy, military, political and law enforcement networks in the world.
    4. I want 30 Assault Unit (Flemings Commandos) and 008 to help Bond as 008 is always mentioned as Bond's replacement (Goldfinger) and a Bond Girl that is not from a dysfunctional background.
    5. I want a good baddies sidekick that can rival Odd Job.
    6. I don't want the Fleming titles not used as films title, I want EON to use their imagination and like they did with Skyfall think of a new title. Example, Decisive Moment or if they go with a Fleming Title go with a Chapter name from the books like Moment of Truth, Per Fine Ounce (If they use Diamond Plot) or Shatterhand and as we know Shatterhand is Blofeld.
    7. Now I know some will not agree but I liked TMWTGG and the way the instrumental version of the song was played in various parts of the film, I felt this added to the atmosphere and with locations in Africa and India it would be good. We also, need more of the Bond Theme and especially at the films climatic battle scene.

There is what I would like to see for BOND 24.

I want a short fat ugly lesbian henchwoman.
We have not had one since 1969... you can tell from reading Fleming's stories that Bond has a real phobia of such women.

James Bond theme Overload. I'm sick of having subtle hints of the Bond theme woven into certain scores. dangit, I want a Bond theme explosion ala Tomorrow Never Dies. I miss the good old days of Bond music.

Oh that would be great! And there is plenty from the novels FRWL and OHMSS about Rosa Klebb and Irma Bunt that have not been used.

I liked the fresh approach of CR: no Q, no Moneypenny. The series had reached a point of diminishing returns with these characters by DAD. How many more flirtation scenes or Q workroom scenes did we need?

Q in particular had a poignant retirement scene in TWINE and they should have retired the character after that movie as well. Ditto Moneypenny after AVTAK.

With CR, It felt like the cobwebs of decades were finally being swept away.

I wish SF had continued in that vein. The M switch is fine (Dench is great but so is Fiennes). So for Bond 24 I'd like to have no Q and no Moneypenny, again.
