(if there is already a thread on this, i apologize.. i looked, but i can't sift through pages and pages and pages)
now that Skyfall has come and gone, and we've had ample time to view it, digest it, and form rational (and sometimes irrational) opinions on it, i think it's time we as a community rate it, the traditional way... those regs who are familiar with this know what i am talking about..
but for those who are new, and have not participated in one before, here's how it works.. you get 11 categories, and they as follows..
- Bond
- Babes
- Villains
- Humour
- Sadism
- Snobbery
- Action
- Locations
- Gadgets
- Music
- Tilt
you grade each category on a 0 to 10 scale ( 0 being the worst, 10 the best - obviously)
'Tilt' is essentially any bonus points you would like the award the film, for any reason of your choosing..
at the end, you tally your score up... i'll get the ball rolling first..
BOND - 10/10
its been fun watching Craig grow into the role, and really put his own stamp on the character. It was nice to see them give Dan a little more humor to play around with, something that i maintained he was good at conveying (often times in a very dry way) which lends itself beautiful to this character... But i think the moments where Dan really shines in the role are in scenes like when he meets Severine, and he dissects her, right down to the sex trade tattoo on her wrist.. "I know when a woman is afraid and pretending not to be."
BABES - 6.5/10
not too many this time around... again. But the couple we do get are very gorgeous - the island girl in the beginning and Naomi Harris as Eve... but Severine - damn... smokin' hot.... i only give it a 6.5 rating though, because the girls weren't around that much... the real Bond girl of this film is Judi Dench - and i doubt very many of us are anxious to see what she looks like in a bikini lol..
VILLAINS - 10/10
not ashamed to say that Silva is right up there with Zorin as my favorite villains of the franchise.. Bardem's performance arguably steals the show, and he also has arguably one of the best introductions of a villain in the entire franchise - it's a slow build up, and then we he finally shows up an hour into the movie - he delivers one of the best monologs... in my opinion, he is THE classic villain that we have been waiting oh so long for..
HUMOUR - 8/10
i was pleasantly surprised at the amount of humour in this film - both obvious and subtle... Craig is finally given some room to breathe with the role, and they allowed him to simply do more than look intense all the time.. but as in the previous category, the one who truly has some of the best lines in this film is Silva..
SADISM - 7/10
not only does Bond get shot twice during the PTS, but he also uses a knife to dig bullet fragments out of his shoulder... but the best form of sadism in this film is the William Tell trick shot test that Silva makes Bond do.. not only does it have it a brutal outcome, but it's also a way that Silva is mentally torturing a not up to par Bond.
SNOBBERY - 5/10
i really can't think of too much snobbery in this film...... oh well...
ACTION - 8/10
here's why...... yes, there wasn't a lot of action in this film.. we got the PTS chase, some small fist fights, Bond chasing Silva through London which eventually leads to a shootout, and the siege on Skyfall at the end... in comparison to a majority of Bond films, this one is pretty light on the action.. but the action was handled masterfully, which was surprising for a newcomer like Mendes (unlike the blurred mess at times in QOS).. - i would put this film on the same level as OHMSS with action.. not a lot of it - but executed well.
LOCATIONS - 7/10
Istanbul.. been there done that..
Macau.. been there done that..
Shanghai was nice to see though, just wish we could've seen more of it..
and it was about time that London featured prominently in a Bond film... only took them 50 years..
Skyfall... an amazing location built for the film... i almost wish they would reconstruct it and hold tours lol.
GADGETS - 5/10
the PPK with the palm reader was a nice touch, nice LTK reference.. but i think the gag of it works better in this film than it does in LTK..... the little radio/distress beacon, meh...
MUSIC - 7/10
mostly for Adele's wonderful title theme... i found Newman's score to be exactly what i thought it would be, and thats on the whole - average.. for those who complained about Arnold's work and were so eager to thrust him out the door and embrace Newman - i dont know.. i just felt like Newman didn't do anything that Arnold hadn't done, and in a lot of ways done better. How Newman's score gets nominated for an Academy Award, but Anorld's score for CR didn't is mind boggling.... but.... for all it's averageness, there are some really good tracks in this score, such as "Brave New World" "Shanghai Drive" "Jellyfish" "Komodo Dragon" "The Chimera" "Tennyson" "Enquiry" and "Skyfall".... i think those select tracks stand out the most to me...
TILT - 10/10
much like CR, i believe this film will go down as a Bond classic one day...
TOTAL - 8/10
Comments
but er.....
wouldn't this kind of thing fit better in the skyfall review thread ?
i've been a part of these forums for almost 4 years now, and fan verdict polls on this site have regularly gotten their own threads - which is different from a review/discussion thread.... i dont see how this is any different..
Oh, Alright then !
If you look at the other film's pages there all have a forum score.
- Bond - 9.5
- Babes - 5
- Villains - 10
- Humour - 8
- Sadism - 7
- Snobbery - 4
- Action - 8
- Locations - 7
- Gadgets - 4
- Music - 7.5
Total - 70/10 = 7/10
Babes- 6/10. Both girls are fit. Severine was brilliant and I felt bad for her, and Marhloe played her really well. Nice surprise there, unfortunetly she doesn't get much screentime. Harris like I said is hot, but I thought she seemed wooden and was the weak link acting wise. I'm also not a fan of Moneypenny getting a big backstory about how she shot Bond, why couldn't they have just introduced her as a secretary? Oh well...
Villians- 10/10. Bardem stole the movie for me. Silva was brilliant and is one of my favourite villians, he's up there with Sanchez, Trevelayn and Blofeld imo.
Humour- 6/10. Some great lines and I had been asking for more humour. I ranked this lower than I would've done though because of the Macau fight. I thought there was no sense of danger or intensity and it was jarring and out of place, especially after Severine's tragic backstory was revealed just before it. Then after stepping on a CGI komodo dragon (really?), Craig spouts 2 one liners one after the other, coming across as a poor mans Moore/Brosnan. This would've been better in a Moore flick but it was out of place here, and sadly I think it drags the humour score down.
Locations- 8/10. Nice variety, Macau and Shanghai looked brilliant, Istanbul was nice and Scotland was gloomy and mysterious, which suited the bit before the finale. London was a bit dull because I lived there for most of my life (so far) and I like exotic locations in Bond flicks. But as it's the 50th it's about time we got some screentime, Bond is British afterall and he's bigger here than anywhere else.
Snobbery- 4/10 but I think that's a good thing. In my eyes Bond shouldn't be too much of a posh snob.
Sadism- 7/10. Nothing too brutal is shown on screen but there's a fair bit of sadism, Silva blowing Severine's head off, Bond digging bullets out of his shoulder, etc.
Action- 7/10. There isn't much but most of it was well done. The finale and PTS were the highlights and tube sequence was decent enough. Fist fights though felt a bit bland and much less brutal than CR/QOS. Nothing on par with the stair scrap in Casino here. The one in the skyscraper was well shot but I didn't get the brutality or sense of danger I got with the last two.
Gadgets- 3/10. There's literally nothing we haven't seen before. The DB5's machine guns were fun to see back but it's nothing new and we barely saw them. The ejector seat wasn't used. The gun was a good LTK reference but again, nothing new. Oh, and a radio. Pretty poor movie gadget wise.
Music- 6/10. Not a fan of Newman. I thought apart from the odd track, his score was bland and flat, and because of how "subtle" it was I thought it was forgettable. Bring back Arnold!
Overall I'd give SF 8/10.
- Babes 8/10 With Severine we get a mysterious beautifull woman worthy of a Bondmovie, the other woman being Moneypenny makes this movie a bit poor on the eye-candy.
- Villains 6.5/10 starts of as most promessing before his absurd plan gets shown and then slips away in averageness.
- Humour 4/10 this version 0f 007 offers very little and then it feels somewhat forced. His suit correction on the train was great and that was it for me.
- Sadism 0/10 the SM factor was absent
- Snobbery 4/10 simply have Fieness around is enough on that front
- Action 6/10 the opening sequence is great that rest is average and fail to impress.
- Locations 6/10 I miss the old days when the EON circus actually went places, once again with SF you wonder how much they actually filmed oustide of the studio. instead of enjoying the sights.
- Gadgets 0/10 only Q could be described as a tool.
- Music 7/10 A great improvement after DA dropped the ball when it comes to originality and making a real impression and give the music somewhat of his own signature as he has done with say Sherlock Holmes.
- Tilt 6/10 further down the line people will recognise SF as what it is namely an attempt at making a great movie but it really is only an improvement on QoB and that is not such a difficult feat.
- Babes 4/10
- Villains 9/10
- Humour 7/10
- Sadism 6/10
- Snobbery 6/10
- Action 8/10
- Locations 9/10
- Gadgets 5/10
- Music 7/10
- Tilt 9/10
Total = 7/10
True I found them rather difficult to rate. But I guess they are involved when it comes to Flemings books.
Looking back, it seems you don't have to rate the 'tilt'.
And I'm wondering how to rate some of those categories. Like "Babes"... what does that even mean... how hot the women are or something? Hell if I know. Can I rate the men then? That would be 10/10 - at least in theory, and even if I only count two of them, and neither of them was at their... hmph, never mind that, they still shared one of the hottest scenes in a Bond movie ever, so there.
Snobbery? Sadism? Something to aspire to and rate? I don't know how to.
Gadgets? I don't care for gadgets much, haven't since I was, I don't know, 12 or something. Would plenty of mostly silly gadgets be 10/10? That's supposed to be a positive rating though, I presume, and it wouldn't be a positive scenario for me, so again, I don't know how to do this.
But let's see about the rest...
Bond 9.5 - a superb, beautifully subtle performance from Daniel portraying Bond that really lives through the stuff he experiences and actually finds it tough (life), instead of just breezing through an adventure (fantasy). Self-doubt and vulnerability combined with confidence and determination, sprinkled with humour, and rooted in loyalty and duty.
Villains 9.5 - I notice that's a plural, but there wasn't much to pay attention to apart from Silva - and I certainly paid attention to him. Easily my fave Bond villain ever, and also one of the best movie villains in general. Complex, funny, tragic, entertaining, fascinating and fantastic.
Humour 8.5 - Some great stuff, both verbal and other. Not all of it worked for me, but mostly it made me smile/grin/giggle. One of the funnier Bond movies for me.
Action 8 - Some of it was merely good, some was just beautiful. The first part of the PTS was just ok - it got better once cars and motorbikes were abandoned, and the use of the digger was inspired. I didn't much care for the dragon pit. London was pretty good. I loved the Shanghai fight and the Scotland showdown.
Locations 8 - Istanbul was a bit so-so for me, otherwise it was fine. I really liked London and Scotland. I would have been happy to see more of Shanghai, but the little we saw was beautifully used. Macau was beautiful, too. If Silva's island can be counted in this category, I liked it a lot.
Music 9 - Love it, and continue to listen to it a hell of a lot. It's an unusual cd for me to be this much into, but I just am, and can't seem to get enough of it.
Oh and Adele's theme song is great, too.
Tilt 10 - My favourite Bond film together with CR. For various reasons Skyfall has had a bigger impact on me and brought more pleasure to my life than any other movie ever, for which I'll be forever grateful. And because of that my...
...Total has to be 10. Yes, it's bigger than its parts. I don't mean it's perfect, obviously - no movie is, anyway, and I could easily nitpick on some stuff, and have mentioned some above - but I simply couldn't ask for more from any movie. By which I mean its effect on me, which has been unique.
See:
My brains have been buzzing since the first time I went to see Skyfall. I've been reading, writing, analyzing, finding out about various things, reading some more, watching, searching for info, thinking. I've learned a lot of new things... on varied subjects, some of which have something to do with something in Skyfall, and some not at all - one thing leading to another, one answer producing a new question, or opening up another area of interest. I've also watched a lot of movies (and I mean a lot) - ones I've seen before as well as ones I haven't, and there's much more to watch. I've also found new ways to watch movies, which has made watching them more fascinating than ever.
I've found new things to think about, new things to learn more about. Using one's brains (even if it may not be evident to others, ehem...) is always a good thing. Being curious and eager to learn new things daily is exhilarating. 24 hours a day is nowhere near enough. Books to read, history, art, bleedin poetry. Now... Oh, ok, doesn't make much sense, does it? Told you so.
An even shorter version:
I've been smiling a hell of a lot the past few months.
I guess I didn't actually answer your question, did I? Oh well. I said it's complicated (read: messy). :P
- Bond 10/10 what need to be said hes back and in FULL Form, no biddy biddo bedda here just CRAIG as whohe born to play. BOND. A litle worn a little wounded
- Babes 0/10 Im married i dont needthat.
- Villains 20/10! WOW SILVA! a diabolcol foe for BOND no question!
- Humour dont recal much only saw it one time
- Sadism 10/10 the whip the golden chains.. take me to the spot.. is this REALLY PG13??
- Snobbery 8/10 did not apreciate the poem reading of Tennyson.. do this hokey huffy puffystuff have a place in Bond? no. let have more action.
- Action 10/10 bleu me away the skyfall assault very tacticly acruate, THIS is what you do in a home invasion. blow the scumaway
- Locations 2/10 been theredone that by now. boring boring boring
- Gadgets 0/10 what gaddgets?
- Music 4/10 only sawonce though music was uninspoired save few moments
- Tilt let award 10 wholepoints to sam mendez
So basically since you viewed Skyfall you have experienced a deep stage of enlightenment that has made you eager to exercise your brain at all hours to find the same fulfillment you had in analyzing, viewing, commenting and researching Skyfall into other films as well as branching out and stimulating your own mind through various literary works, history texts, art texts and poetry because you have realized the great joy in not only learning new things about all sorts of subjects and have since felt satisfaction in knowing new things that were at first unknown to you, leading you on an enthusiastic search to find out more about the things you don't yet have knowledge on?
Yeah, I think I get it. B-)
Seriously, not quite. But you're onto something there. :) Maybe I should have explained my life situation and how it relates to it all, but that would get really boring and somewhat depressing, so better skip that.
Ah, shucks... :\">
I do hope all is well.
Babes 7.5/10: I'm not that much into Eve so this 7 is mostly because of Severine, which only fault was to leave the movie too soon...
Villains 10/10: That was a top performance, classic, memorable and yet unique.
Humour 10/10: I felt SF had the right dose of humour for its time (that bit on the tube is a top scene for me).
Sadism 8/10: It's not CR, but the execution of Severine pretty much carries a lot of sadism.
Snobbery 8/10: One of my biggest and rare complaints about Craig's Bond was the lack of snobbery in CR and QOS (for example, Vesper teaching him how to dress for the casino). In SF this is greatly redeemed in the Macau's casino sequence, even if he isn't Connery talking about a rather disappointing cherry.
Action 9/10: Great action and the best thing of it was the final twist of going to Bond's home instead of the villain's lair. That was an interesting revision.
Locations 9/10: Very good and beautifully shot.
Gadgets 9/10: A guy and a radio, just the things he needed. That's enough.
Music 9/10: This grade is the average of a 10 song with an 8 soundtrack.
Tilt 9.5/10: A top movie (4th in my ranking) that still haven't beaten my favorite 3... but give it time!
Total: 9/10
- Bond - 8
- Babes - 5
- Villains - 6
- Humour - 8
- Sadism - 5
- Snobbery - 5
- Action - 5

- Gadgets - 3
- Music - 8
- Tilt - 9 for the way it looked, simply stunning film to view, just like myself.
Overall better than average but not there yet: 7/10
Ok, so despite the word it's not mainly about hotness? If we're talking about characters, acting, I'd have to say... maybe 8.5. Most "babes" in Bond films are irritating as hell, and I didn't find these to be, so that's a big plus. I actually would have wanted Severine to have more screen time, which might be a first in the franchise. Not as much as I wanted Silva to have more screen time, but nevertheless. Bérénice was surprisingly good, and the character was interesting. Eve was in it a lot more, and it was enough, but I quite liked her, and won't be upset about seeing more of her in the future. Naomie even seems like a nice person, which is good - Danny Boyle apparently gave accurate info to Sam Mendes there. :)
Babes 10 for severine alone, totally under used.
Villains 4
Humour 4
Sadism 5
Snobbery 7
Action 5
Locations 5
Gadgets 3
Music 2
If i were to rate Skyfall purely on the first half of the movie the some of the ratings would be higher.
Babes 8/10: Sévérine is striking, her short appearance on screen is inversely proportional to its impact. Eve starts in a low note but improves throughout the film hitting a high note by the end.
Villains 10/10: One of the most memorable ever. Bardem delivers a great performance as usual.
Humour 8/10: Good enough for me, Craig delivers his funnier lines naturally and with panache.
Sadism 7.5/10: A good measure of it, the highlight being Silva's own twisted ways.
Snobbery 7/10: Again, in good measure. This Bond knows what he wants and how he wants it. The snobbery in this one is understated but it's obvious by the look of Bond.
Action 8/10: No complaints for me. I think it has enough action and well directed. The fight on top of the train, the fight in Shangai (amazing scene, one of the best ever), and the final in the Scottish Highlands. What a debut for Mendes!
Locations 9/10: Beautifully shot. Although some of the locations were not extensively used they were believable for me. They served to tell the story and not the other way around.
Gadgets 7/10: Not much but enough. A gadget overdose plagued the series too many times.
Music 9/10: I would give the soundtrack alone 7/10, but the title song raises it. I was at first disappointed with what I heard from the soundtrack. When I heard the whole thing I was more satisfied. Although I have heard better from Newman the soundtrack works very well. It is not overpowering, it doesn't distract the viewer from the film but rather helps to guide the viewers attention to what is happening on screen and in the characters mind. The title song is a great one, what else is there to say?
Tilt 9.5/10: One of my favourites, this one is an instant classic. It has all the elements I enjoy in a Bond film and in Bond. This is not "Bond by numbers" or "Bond's greatest hits". This is old and new, classic and innovative, all at the same time. For that it deserves a high mark.
Total: 8.5/10
- Babes 5/10
- Villains 7/10
- Humour 7/10. If there have at more i haven't like that.
- Sadism/Snobbery 6/10. Silva.
- Action 6/10. Because biggest part already be spoild. It mis mabey 1 extra action scene.
- Locations 5/10. Very disapointed in use. The Island and Macau in specialy. But finaly since Goldeneye a lair end to like. Stil can be inproved of course, not spoil it next time.
- Gadgets 8/10 If there have at more i haven't like that.
- Music 8/10. As music on the soundtrack 7/10. Only with Macau & Shangai (The Elevator) i miss David Arnold TMND style there.
- Tilt 7-6.5/10. Miss the thrill of better Bond movies. The story and drama are weak. This feels better with GE and Twine. Should have go with a bang, but not happen.
Based on 1 view and promotion before and after. At this moment i am happy Sam Mendes not comingback. My idea from the directer of Road To Perdition (QOS) and American Beauty i don't expect drama be so disapointed. I mabey expect to much a Bond movie like QOS, but then inproved mabey more dificult but for other people mabey better to understand in specialy also because of the production designer return. Again after QOS a movie and mabey worse a movie who after 1-4 views not lke any more in the future.
This movie finaly shows a more rounded Craig who also gets to be funny in his own style without copying anybody else. He gives the character finaly a more 007 feel to it.
He is a great actor and finaly gets to show it while the hurt-007 finaly gets to annoy me as well.
BABES - 6/10
This new 007 does not get too many great looking women but Severine is easily the most gorgeous lass since Catharina Murino. To bad both are the girls to die.
Naomi Harris is allright.
Dame Judi Dench is as always a brilliant actress and her loss to the franchise will be huge. Voldemort has his work cut out for him. Dench is the Bond woman of the movie for me.
But women-wise the Craig series is not that convincing for me.
VILLAINS - 6/10
Silva was allright, he started of so promessing in the first encounter and lost most credibility with the rest of the movie. He started as a great villain and ended up as an annoyance instead of being threathening
HUMOUR - 8/10
Finaly somebody got the humor factor right, and I was pleasantly surprised.
SADISM - 3/10
The duel to shoot the whiskey glass of the head of Severine was well done up the Bonds flippant remark about the waste of good whiskey. For me very unBondlike it spoiled the whole scene.
SNOBBERY - 3/10
Poor mans snobbery, how a lost agent just gets taken back up in the MI6 family, as if. But hey he is 007 innocent beyond all reasonable doubt.
ACTION - 6/10
The opening actionscene (the famous PTS scene) was very well done. the fight in the glass office building was badly choreographed and filmed and full of oops (gloves on and off), The scene in the casino was so-so, the chase was exciting up to the moment of the traincrash (that pulled me out of the suspense of make belief, I found that hard to believe and while spectacular (even if DH3 didi it better) it was unbelievable). The shoot-out in the room was excellent, the finale was somewhat mweh, with the kudos to the use of the DB5. Still after a CR & QoB a bit of lett down.
LOCATIONS - 5/10
Istanbul.. a very good return to that city and making it look nice.
Macau.. studioshot
Shanghai ... studio work
London was well shot
Skyfall & the Highlands, well shot but not very exciting to look at.
The moeny for this Bondmovie obviously went not to any location. And the movie shows it. Taken 2 made better use of Istanbul.
GADGETS - 5/10
the PPK with the palm reader, was done better in LTK.
MUSIC - 8/10
Adele's wonderful title theme is easily a 9/10 and a well deserved Oscar in my opinion.
Newmans work was an improvement to the previous composer, he would always be better fitted since there was really no competition. That said some of his work was less than expected but still a worthy 7/10. the average is a simple sum.
TILT - 2/10
After the sensational opening Mendes decided to keep any logic and realism out of the script, even the chance to use the opening of the Fleming TMWTGG he failed to ignore over his own sense of what a Bondmovie should feel. He got the feel right, mostly, but the movie failed miserably storywise. It has got so many inconsistancies in the story that is even fails to be better than some of the OTT storylines from the RM era that were constentent tales told at least.
A few years down the line this movie will be considered the BO champion but a poor 007 movie nonetheless. The previous BO champion might be dated but proved to be a blue-print for many movies and tv episodes outside of the 007 franchise.
After waiting for so many years I am dissapointed. EON without Cubby seems to do their leading men no favors in giving them no great scripts or movies.
TOTAL - 6/10
(thanks to Craig and Adeles performances mostly)
