    The Spy Who Loved Me

I was interested to find so many connections between OHMSS, the last 007 I watched, and TSWLM, whether intended or not! Things like Bond's evasion of Anya's mention of Tracy's death and the fact that Bond defied orders yet again to go back to the villain's lair to save the girl reminded me of OHMSS a great deal! All things considered, I really enjoyed my time watching TSWLM tonight. Roger Moore was hands down THE MAN in this movie! As he cruised through the glorious locations, the varied and explosive action sequences (namely the Lotus car chase and the Liparus finale), and tangled with dastardly foes like Jaws and Stromberg (whom I found a little more menacing this time around), he simply shined with pure 007-ness! A rather exquisite Bond movie that exemplifies much of what the typical series entry is all about!

Current Ranking in my Random Bondathon

    1. GoldenEye
    2. License to Kill
    3. SkyFall
    4. A View to a Kill
    5. Live and Let Die
    6. The Spy Who Loved Me
    7. From Russia with Love
    8. Thunderball
    9. Casino Royale
    10. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    11. Quantum of Solace
    12. You Only Live Twice
    13. Moonraker

    Die Another Day

I'm pretty sure I've got this movie all figured out. I have seen it so many damned times now and my opinion never really changes. It starts out decently and pretty much goes down the drain once the film gets to Iceland. Embarrassing CGI, acting, and scriptwriting (etc.) follow from there on.

    Certainly no higher than a....

    5/10

....but if you wanted to give it a lower score I can't say I'd actively argue against it.

I'd totally agree with you, even with the score!

The first hour of the movie is a set-up for a solid, relatively small-scale Bond adventure. The second hour is the veritable 40-year franchise collapsing under its own weight. It's a spectacle to just watch it fall apart.

Oh, and as a afterword for my brief Die Another Day review:

I actually think Zao was a pretty cool henchman. I can't really say he's wasted in the film as he has a fair amount of screen-time, but I almost wish he was the main villain instead of Graves. The diamonds in the face thing was a very neat idea, and I actually liked how monotone Rick Yune plays him (whether that was intentional or not is still up in the air).

Perhaps in the way he was written into the film, but he had the foundations to be interesting. He had a neat physical deformity, was a physical match for Bond and had a decked out gadget car of his own. The script did the character no favors, but in the hands of different writers, I think he could have made a good villain.

Although as he stands in the film, I didn't mind him.

QoS. I urge everyone to rewatch this movie and coming from me that's saying something. Sure, the film's not perfect and the editing of the action could be so much better but after ignoring this film for quite some time, it's actually a damn good movie. I think the pacing also helps and Craig turns in an equally fine performance as he does in CR and SF. QoS was a pleasent surprise at how entertaining I found it to be after disliking it for so long. I am of the belief that QoS will be rediscovered as being a great Bond movie in years to come.

    I wouldn't call it great.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy it more than I used to (used to hate it though because of how disappointing it was), but I still wouldn't call it great. It's too flawed for that imo.

Lots of people seem to think it'll be the next OHMSS (in terms of the fans general opinions changing), but I think it has too many flaws to be thought of as one of the best.

I think it'll be a LTK (in terms of fan reactions not quality, LTK is my all time favourite and is miles better imo). It'll get more appreciation as time goes on but fans will still be divided on it 20 odd years from now.

I think it'll be great but not necessarilly as one of the all time best like OHMSS is. Maybe it will reach a similar status to LTK as you said, who knows? But I definitely see it getting a new found appreciation over the years to come.
  • I watched three Bond movies in the last week.

Quantum of Solace proved to still be Quantum of Solace. Same bad title, overly edited action, and inconsistent plot. But doggone it there's still so much good about it. The exploration of Bond's character, the new look for MI6, the ending scene. I really did like the different look they gave all the MI6 offices. As much as I love the return to Universal Exports, the redesigned offices look cool.

I continue to be on the pro-Licence to Kill side, even though I like less than most people on the "like it" side. There have been over 20 years of the same points on LTK, so I have nothing new to contribute, except that I find the one group of henchmen in the final scene who will not quit to be very funny. They switch cars, chase him on foot, it's great.

I also saw Skyfall, which remains very good but still overrated. Almost everything about the movie is very well done, except for Silva's plot, which collapses halfway through and manages to be less logical than plans to destroy humanity and rebuild in space with a superior humans. It's also a bit jarring to see Bond go from "too inexperienced and rash" to "getting too old" in consecutive movies. Finally, there's the issue of continuity, as there is no interpretation of this movie's place in the canon that doesn't have its problems. Does it come right before Dr. No? Is it part of an unapologetic reboot like the last two? Is it after Die Another Day? At this point, I'd say each fan can choose for himself and alter the canon in his head according. I take the first option myself, but I'm well aware that he's already met Felix, M has a different name, and Q is a few decades younger. Oh, well.

You took the words out of my mouth, and I agree that it could be the "OHMSS of the 21st century". =D>

I need to pop in this little gem again real soon.

Watched Skyfall yesterday. Great film and it's in my top ten Bond films but I think it's a little overrated among fans. I feel Casino Royale is the much superior film. Although I did like the way things ended and gave it the more classic feel; we finally have Q, Moneypenny, and M is a man again. All these make me feel much more optimistic about the future of Bond.

Watching Dr. No right now. I find it interesting to watch the most recent Bond film and then watch the very first from fifty years ago.

Tonight I will watch another; guess I'm finally doing a Bondathon . I'm taking any suggestions. :D

Yes, it's fairly high up mine too, but then Timothy Dalton is James Bond for me in the same way Sean Connery is for others.

Watched QOS last night. Still not one of my favorites by any stretch, but it doesn't look like it will sink any further in my rankings.

Camille is an underrated Bond girl. Too bad she didn't star in a better film.

The picture's nadir is the title track. God, it's ghastly. Painful to listen to and amateurish beyond belief. How that gutter trash made it into a Bond film is beyond me.

The Casino Royale '67 if not that Diamonds Are Forever.
  • Currently watching what is my favourite from the Moore era - The Spy Who Loved Me.

Moore puts in a super performer, Jaws is a cracking and terrifying henchman, Stromberg a sinister villain. One of my favourite parts is seeing a very ruthless 007 swiping his tie out of the hand of Sandor, allowing him to fall to his death, a side of Bond I really do enjoy seeing.

Cool car, cool gadgets and an unexplainable fish appearance.
One letdown for me is the rather wooden performance of Barbara Bach. Her facial expression doesn't seem to change whatever the situation.

    Despite that, an excellent movie.

    OHMSS

One thing I love about Lazenby is the everyman aspect. He actually feels like a real person, more than any of the other Bonds.

People say the same about Craig, who is a more emotionally vulnerable Bond, but he's like the f***ing Terminator at times during the action scenes.

Dalton was brilliant as the conflicted assassin (still for my money the best Bond by far) but although he showed emotional vulnerability he wasn't much of an everyman.

Lazenby though nails that side of it. There are tons of moments where he seems like a real, vulnerable person. Desperately trying to lose Blofeld's men, grieving over Tracy, etc. There's no way Connery could've done a better job.

I remember thinking at the cinema that it was a really cool idea, finally giving the villain a car to rival Bonds.

One of the few bits of DAD I enjoy is the car chase. Jag vs Aston, both with gadgets, and I think Tamahori was actually quite good at the action scenes when he didn't fill them with bad CGI.

Can't say I agree on Zao though.

To celebrate 30 years I just watched Octopussy on plain old DVD! I still like this film even when Bond dresses up as a clown. Orlov is a good villain but I was surprised how little of the screen time he gets. A bit of a relic with the cold war a distant memory but still a good Bond movie!

Its strange. Watching Dalton sometimes he seems like an everyman but not quite in the way I'd imagine Bond if that makes sense. I was watching LTK a few weeks back and one of my thoughts during the scenes at the party was "he's like me" (i.e. the "nice" best friend who's liked, is a little nervous around women and who wouldn't hurt a fly). As much as I felt the original Bond was an "everyman" I NEVER thought he was that much like me.

Lazenby isn't as good an actor as Dalton but he does at least have a bit of an arrogant quality to him that fits in well with Bond - as well as some vulnerability.

    Hope I'm making myself clear.

Last Friday I watched DAD for the first time in about eight years just to see if it was as dreadful as I remember. Upon this viewing I found it sufferable up to the Q scene, at which point DAD expeditiously descends into ultimate farce. My VCR delivered its own critique of the film by eating it on the rewind. I chucked the chewed up tape in the garbage and will never replace it. Au revoir, DAD.

I've decided to do a Bond-a-thon, but in reverse order, which means Skyfall last night and the other 22 films in subsequent days/weeks/months. (Which also means I get to suffer "relish" Die Another Day soon, which leaves me free to savour the three other Brosnan's entries, without having the spectre of DAD looming over me. I swear the curse of DAD is partly why some people loathe Brosnan so much, it just leaves a bad taste in ones mouth...)

Anyway, this is the fourth time I watched Skyfall, and in was the first time I got to watch by myself; first time was with my friends, second time (late November) with a friend who wasn't with us on the first time, and thirdly, on DVD late February, with my family.

Thus I was able to sit back and really enjoy it, and not over-think too much - as in rankings/bits that I enjoy/not enjoy, plotlines etc...

So, Skyfall is sitting pretty in my top ten (8/23), and I was very much entertained by it. The casting, cinematography, direction and action were all top notch, as was the script, in parts anyway - some of Eve's lines came out a little flat; it as if Harris was trying too hard, and some of her and Bond's flirting was a little "clunky"...

The plot were Silva gets "captured" was a bit weak, though (the holding cell wasn't very secure was it, leading down into the tube...) I detected the whiff of Purvis and Wade in that sequence, but all in all I felt it all hung together rather nicely.

It's taken four viewings, and a couple of listens to the soundtrack, but I've managed to get some of Newman's score into my head. Prior to this, I thought the score worked well in the movie, but one can't remember any off it, afterwards. Although it did seem to be a bit generic-action film, and in one particular scene, when Bond is hanging off the lift in Shanghai, it reminded me off Zimmers scores for Batman.

Bits that I didn't enjoy - well, other than the plot inconsistency of Silva's plan in London, there wasn't too much; I felt that Bond didn't have to fall down a waterfall in the PTS, (that seemed like overkill to me); the bit where the CGI helicopters show up in Silvas island was a bit too much Austin Powers for me, especially with the music playing on top of it, and finally the punning, in the second half, really dilutes the earnest interpretation that Craig has given us. Still these are musings of Bond afincado, and do not really detract from the film.

    * I still get goosebumps when the superb Main Titles, alongside Adele's rousing song, is played.
