Now now, they are just opinions, mate. Though to be fair, I believe @WestonMcKay has only read those seven Bond novels as of yet and is ranking them as he goes along, so he isn't placing the novels of Deaver and Faulks above the rest of Fleming, you needn't worry.

That is most correct. As I had previously addressed that I happened to have found a copy of both DMC and CB at a bookstore I frequent. So I went ahead and bought them to save me the hassle of ordering a copy.

It's all good :) I hope as much. It will be interesting to see where these two settle in.

Presumably low I'm guessing. But Carte Blanche should get a decent ranking as I enjoyed the last third of it. the Villains got better then and more menacing IMO.
DMC will probably still be VERY low on my rankings.

Finished Licence To Kill earlier. It's a decent attempt from Gardner, whom stays relatively close to the film (though not as close to his own Bond series; Bond being a commander and not using the ASP 9mm), making only a few detours. Unfortunately, as good as the book might be, it's not able to convey what I feel to being the heart, the engine of the film, Dalton's performance.

  • I'm not much of a reader, sadly, but ive owned all of the Fleming Bond novels for quite some time and decided it was about time I read them. I have read Casino Royale and Live and Let Die and am now on Moonraker. I'm really enjoying Moonraker, which seems to be a favorite among most.

Literary Bond doesn't get better than Monraker, imo.

Brokenclaw is now finished in my literary Bondathon.
Porpoise is clubbed to death, Wanda & Chi Chi are both beaten and Bond has a naked close encounter with Brokenclaws pack of wolves, but is also put through the ringer with Brokenclaws agonising challenge.

A bit nasty, this one. Also, it's starting to bug me how Bond refers to the villains as 'friend...', in this case 'friend Brokenclaw'. It was ok at first, but now it's getting a bit silly.

Sad as it is I have never read a Bond novel, given the exception to the Young Bond series, up until now. I intend to do it chronologically. Still reading Casino Royale at the moment, I have intentionally only read a third of it since I'm awaiting Live and Let Die and Moonraker to be delivered and don't want to have to wait days in-between novels.

Currently reading Live and let die. Not enjoying it as much as I did Casino Royale..
  • "--them all"
    - James Bond 'Dr. No'
Dr. No is a great entry into the Bond series, as Crab Key is a great setting, Quarrel is as good as ever, and Honeychile is a great Bond girl. It's more brutal than most of the novels and I rank it high on my list of Bond book rankings.

Finished The Man From Bararossa just before coming online, and I am glad. Glad because I found this one to be incredibly dull. Nothing, (the plot, the characters etc..) engaged my interest. I came dangerously close to giving up, but somehow managed to push on.

Yeah. Not a bad book. It's the only one of Benson's I've read twice. I just wish Benson had have been able to write better and that his books sounded less like fan work. Too bad about the cinematic influence as well. He had a lot of good, colourful ideas though.

I'm impressed, in Never Send Flowers, Bond spends so much time in bed with Flika, yet he still has the energy to walk about, let alone complete his mission. One thing did bug me, and it's not about Bonds admission to liking Euro Disney (then again, it looked like Bond was having a good time in the fair with Kara in TLD), is that at one point, Gardner writes that Flicka is the first woman to spend the night in Bonds flat. If so, where did Bond make Tiffany sleep, in the garden?

Time to take a bit of a break from the likeable Jack Reacher. I'm reading Moonraker...for the 7th or 8th time. LOL. It's been about 5 years since I last read it though.

Good to see some people are reading the Gardner novels. I must say that the first half of his Bond series is better than the second but they're all enjoyable.

I thoroughly loved Wood's TSWLM novelization, so I gave his MR a try (just finished), and while the first half was outstanding, the second half let me down a bit, but what was I expecting, eh? I knew basically what was coming. He did manage to put a rather realistic-sounding spin on the space part, but (and his may just be my impression) it seems like he wasn't as into writing during the last third, as if his initial belief that he could turn it into something as great as his TSWLM had dwindled some. Still well written, but lots of carelessly "terrified him"s and "hopeless"s tossed about for my taste. Still, curiosity satisfied, and it was definitely much better than the film version.

I thoroughly loved Wood's TSWLM novelization, so I gave his MR a try (just finished), and while the first half was outstanding, the second half let me down a bit, but what was I expecting, eh? I knew basically what was coming. I suspect that most people will disagree with me but I actually think that Wood's Moonraker is better than Wood's TSWLM. I loved the whole business in the second half of Moonraker when Bond was in the jungle before and after he finds Drax's lair. Very Flemingsque. Also, the part where Bond is walking around Drax's mansion reminds me a bit of Goldfinger, the book.

Correct; I disagree- I thought his TSWLM was stellar whilst his MR was simply very good.

Yes, those were intriguing- better than in the movie IMO.

I never thought I would see the day where Bond calls another character, 'sonny jim' and them moments later 'laddie'. Bond and Flicka's romance continues to evolve, leaving me curious as to how it's going to play out.
