Well, like music & story, the actor is part of the mix. I prefer Connery slightly to Brosnan, yet I list TND above most Connery Bonds simply because I feel it's a better overall film. But while TND is IMO a better film than LTK, the power of Dalton cannot be denied, so I list that one higher than TND... and so on...
Everyone does it differently and I'm fine with that. If you think that TND is a better film than LTK then I think you should rank it higher but that's just me. At least you have put some thought behind your reasoning and are not just putting all of your favorite actor's movies at the top.

Would you like some fries with your Brosnan hate? :))

Even I don't hate Brosnan this much.

@pachazo- glad to see there are others who understand what people like Wiz and myself have been questioning. Preferring a certain actor above the others is hardly justification for overlooking better films. It's a very one dimensional view and rarely leads to intelligent debate.

Again, you seem to see things your way only.
There are plenty of people here who have the Brosnan era ranked bottom.
Yet, I just can't imagine you or Wizard questioning that.....???

If you had a clue, you'd already know that my dislike for the Brosnan era doesn't extend to GE and TND. Like you said, you don't care what I have to say so I don't care what you have to say either. No one asked for you to come back and start up with us, your name was never mentioned, no one needs you to come to their rescue. I'm now going to ignore you, because you are clearly an instigator that thinks they are above justifying any statement they make, and I will flag you for it and the mods will deal with you.

Okay, but then, are we ranking our favourites, or the 'best' Bond movies. How may one avoid listing movies with their favourite Bond actor high up if it's a favourites list? If it's a 'best' list, that's different.

Unfortunately, some people cannot distinguish the difference. You and @thelivingroyale have demonstrated the difference and a higher intelligence and grasp of logic.
While I certainly don't dismiss a poster's ability to speak intelligently on a variety of Bondian subjects outside of their personal favorite actor and era, some of these Brosnan fanboys clearly can't distinguish what does and doesn't constitute a good Bond film in the overall context of the series.

Not to mention the Brosnan hater just a few posts above. Really, this applies to all Bonds, as there are people so helplessly in the tank (or consumed by hatred) for all the Bonds that it prevents objective (or even semi-objective) rankings of the movies.

I don't agree whatsoever with @Thunderfinger than GE and TND belong among the worst Bond films. I think it's wrong to bury those films just because one doesn't like Brosnan. And you are so right about those so helplessly in the tank that's they can't be bothered to debate. I'm not a hypocrite about these things. I look at these films objectively and not because I like this guy or don't like this guy, and that's that. Do I agree with @identigraph that TMWTGG is a top 5 film and better than FRWL at #8? Hell no! Clearly he's also overlooking better films himself out of too much love for Moore. But at least you can debate with him about these things and get an intelligent answer. That's all I've ever tried to do with anyone, for example if I ask someone what sane reason they'd have for rating DAD and MR above CR and OHMSS, I expect better than some half assed and smug "it's my opinion, how dare you question it, piss off if you don't like it you Nazi". Why? Because maybe I missed something and can learn from what they have to say. Even after 45 years, I was just saying this to @DarthDimi in PM yesterday, there are things that I question like "why did they do this, what was the motivation?" and sometimes I get answers that I didn't think of that have changed my view. So much for only seeing things my way. The movies are beautifully ambiguous like that, and I love to hear various interpretations. And I don't put myself above other people and hang my hat on "45 years and you can't teach me anything", or "I was reading Fleming before you were born", and if I were that kind of smug asshole I sure could do it and justify it too on sheer knowledge alone.

I know my top 5 is Moore heavy and I could be accused of too much Moore love but I genuinley rate the TMWTGG highly, of course FRWL is a classic film and I do love it. I know that the 60's is considered the golden era but for me personally I do actually enjoy the Moore through to Dalton films the most, not just because of the actors, these are the films I would choose to watch the most because I enjoy them the most.

I know a lot Connery films are quite low in my rankings but I do believe that his first two films are the best, with TB and YOLT being bloated and slow, DAF just being a bit naff overall, but these are of course my opinions and I am well aware that a lot of my top films would be towards the bottom of a lot of peoples lists.

Just to clarify, I did not rank the Brosnan films below CR67. I simply gave all films one-five stars, then named them chronologically within their respective tiers. If i had to do a proper ranking, I would place both CR54 and CR 67 below the first three Brosnans, but above DAD.

Yes, it has never been a favorite of mine; Lazenby aside, I still do not like the film. In the minority on this forum for that, I know, but you know what? It's just my personal tastes, like everybody else.
  • I understand that. Like they say, de gustibus non disputandum.

Or, less pretentiously, if we all agreed we'd all be bored.

Yes, I don't want to be in a discussion where everybody thinks exactly the same way, but I do like the discussions to be civil and not forced. I rank Thunderball lower than most, too. Sometimes I switch Dr. No and Goldfinger around. :)

We're in the same boat on Thunderball. Actually, our rankings for Thunderball and Quantum of Solace are almost the same, just switched.

@Murdock, why do you like Die Another Day more than On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Dr. No, and Goldfinger? I understand it's a personal favorites list, and not an objectively best list (at least I pray it is), but I still don't quite understand how you arrive at that conclusion.

I get more entertainment out of DAD than I do OHMSS, DN and GF. I'm not saying DAD is a better film. But in terms of rewatchability and tend to lean on DAD. But the list changes every year so next year it will be much different.

    Post Skyfall evaluations;

    5. The World Is Not Enough
    6. The Living Daylights

    20. A View To A Kill
    21. Die Another Day
    22. The Man With The Golden Gun
    23. Diamonds Are Forever

Not too many changes, apart from Moonraker, which has gone up.

Note; I love all of the Bond films. I have a special "Bondian grade" to judge them. But, in "real life" they all get 10 out of 10. To a film they entertain me, royally. And isn't that what a film is meant to do?

I didn't rank my list on anything but enjoyment factor.
I'm no expert on film making, so although quality of acting, script, music, staging, story telling matter, it's the over all end product that really counts at the end of the day, isn't it?
So while some films may have a better story, or come off more Fleming like, this sometimes isn't enough for me to rank it higher than a film which maybe technically worse or better .... It really is a hard thing to do, ranking Bond films.
End of the day, I go with my gut, and I'm gonna watch FYEO, GE and FRWL, even DAD over OHMSS, DAF, or QOS which I watched the other day and actually found it over all horrible.

I genuinely consider TND to be a very poorly made film. I watch movies very objectively so for the most part, my lists are in the ballpark of eachother.

I genuinely consider TND to be a very poorly made film.
It's an extremely well made movie, as is Thunderball, yet you rate that so much higher it's ridiculous. Is it the box-ticking? The gun fire? I know right now it's very fashionable to dump on Brosnan, but you even "objectively" rate DAF a better film.
If you're up for it I'd like to go toe to toe with your reasoning on precisely why you feel TND is such a "poorly made" film.
Unless, you MEAN that you just don't like it, which would be totally cool with me. I mean, as an example, objectively speaking, MR is NOT a poorly made film, it just made comedic choices that I severely dislike.
It's a constant gun fight, just a simple turn off your brain action flick. I don't generally find that type of film to be well made, and Spottiswoode just doesn't have the directing chops for Bond IMO. Also I find the plot to be very poor, and almost all the performances (Bond, Paris, Carver, Stamper) to be among the worst in the series. My objective list looks at every element of every film, and then goes "is this a good thing, or a bad thing?" from a cinematic viewpoint. Whether I like something or not is irrelevant; I like many things in the series that objectively are kinda bad, hence OP's lower ranking, and I dislike many things that objectively are good cinema. DAF has a lot going for it in terms of entertainment value, I just think the film takes a massive dump on OHMSS and I can't separate that from the film when I watch it. Hence, a much lower rating on my subjective list. I hope I've cleared it up.

Whether I like something or not is irrelevant
    Impossible mission, that.
I hope I've cleared it up.
Not so much- here, read DVDVerdict's review:
"Tomorrow Never Dies opens with one of the most thrilling pre-credits sequences in the series. Bond single-handedly takes out a terrorist bazaar in an orgy of bullets, hand-to-hand combat, and explosions. Humorous touches (like Bond driving a fighter jet with his knees) link Tomorrow Never Dies to the franchise's tongue-in-cheek past without crossing the line of stupidity. Other action interludes (including the escape from Carver's secret lab and the parking-deck chase) are stellar as well. The helicopter chase is over-the-top; would a non-suicidal pilot really tilt the helicopter forward and use its blades as a weapon? But even this implausible sequence gets the blood pumping.

Moving on to the women, James Bond's stud reputation remains intact. His "little Danish" is red hot. Teri Hatcher is alternately perfect and tone-deaf as the jaded socialite from Bond's past. The show is nearly stolen by Michelle Yeoh, who gracefully achieves a long-term goal of the producers: to give Bond a female equal without raising an army of Political Correctness red flags. Granted, I cringe when Agent Lin utters a dramatic kiai before shooting a bank of computers; you really have to pump yourself up for that—no telling when the computers will fight back. Otherwise, she and Bond have an easy chemistry that works throughout this film. "
    http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/bondultimate4.php

And they 'like' this movie less than I do.
    :))

There, there, Tomorrow Never Dies. They don't really mean it. Everyone knows you're kind of dumb, but we still like you anyway.

    Tomorrow-Never-Dies-Banner.jpg
    "You really mean that?"

    Of course. Of course.

But seriously, even though TND is a shoot-em up film with perhaps a little too much action, I find it to be a solid James Bond film. At least it's not desperately trying to be good when it's not (ahem TWINE and QOS). ;)

Good to see some TSWLM love. It's been my favourite Moore film for ages and I think it's underrated on here. Lots to like in that film.
